Upper airway pressure was measured with a nasotracheal catheter system and a portable pressure transducer in 10 normal horses during maximal exercise before and after left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy. Measurements were repeated 16 weeks after prosthetic laryngoplasty (5 horses) or subtotal arytenoidectomy (5 horses). During maximal exertion, prosthetic laryngoplasty was more effective than subtotal arytenoidectomy in reversing the increases in upper airway pressure that followed left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy.

Some patients who need hearing aids are unable to use an aid which transmits the sound via the external ear canal but have to use a bone-conduction hearing aid. The pressure needed to apply the transducer often gives the patient discomfort, and the attenuating effect of the skin gives poor electroacoustical function of the aid. A permanent skin penetration has made it possible to develop a bone-anchored hearing aid with all components in one housing. Ten patients have been equipped with such an aid. This paper designs and fabricates an instrumented catheter for instantaneous measurement of distributed urethral pressure profiles. A prototype electromechanical analogue of the sympathetic division of the baroreceptor reflex arc was used to maintain blood pressure automatically in two patients with neurogenic orthostatic hypotension. The device prevented significant and sustained reductions in mean blood pressure when the patients were tilted up to 85 degrees. Upon achieving the preset mean blood pressure, the device maintained this pressure with a standard error of less than 2 mm Hg. Similar results were obtained when the patients were walking. The device did not cause supine hypertension during the trials.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) is commonly calculated from the difference between arterial blood pressure (AP) and intracranial pressure (ICP). ICP can be considered the effective downstream pressure of the cerebral circulation. Consequently, cerebral circulatory arrest would occur when AP equals ICP. Estimation of AP for zero-flow pressure (ZFP) may thus allow estimation of ICP. We report a rare malposition of a central venous catheter in a liver transplantation patient which occurred during an intensive care period. The waveform of central venous pressure was aberrant after connecting the catheter to the pressure kit transducer. It was misplaced into left internal mammary vein confirmed by thoracic computed tomography. Significant engorgement of the left internal mammary vein may have been the cause of this rare malposition.
