PURPOSE: To identify the factors predicting the need for palliative transurethral resection of the prostate (channel TURP) in patients with advanced carcinoma of the prostate (CAP) receiving androgen ablation therapy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 1996 to January 2004, 203 patients with advanced CAP were treated by androgen ablation. Patients presenting with retention were catheterized initially, and those (N = 12) who failed a catheter-free trial and had immediate channel TURP were excluded. The remaining 191 patients were followed every 3 months (mean 35.5 months, range 6-92 months). P

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Endoprosthesis has been used to maintain luminal patency in several different diseases and is well established in cardiovascular and gastrointestinal pathologies. The usefulness and application in prostatic pathology and benign prostatic hyperplasia are not as clear. This report reviews the development of overactive bladder in patients with bladder outlet obstruction due to benign prostatic hyperplasia. It also describes a new application of prostatic stents in patients with combined overactive bladder and bladder outlet obstruction.
RECENT FINDINGS: Over the last few decad

After the initial enthusiasm subsided lasercoagulation of the prostate has been criticized because the extent of tissue destruction cannot be controlled and many patients may be expected to have significant postoperative obstructive as well as irritative voiding symptoms which may last for weeks. Thanks to new laservaporization techniques these disadvantages have been largely eliminated. With the Holmium laser a real resection of prostatic tissue is possible allowing the surgeon to see the prostatectomy defect immediately and to assess tissue destruction during the operation ("what you see is

OBJECTIVE: To sum up the experience in the treatment of prostate cancer found in transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) by laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP).
METHODS: Fourteen patients found with prostate cancer during TURP underwent LRP in our hospital between 2011 and 2016. We reviewed our experience in the treatment and analyzed the clinical and follow-up data.
RESULTS: LRP was successfully performed in all the cases at 1-4 months after TURP, with a mean operation time of (113 ± 94) min (80-220 min), a mean blood loss of (188 ± 152) ml (100-500 ml), a mean catheterization t

BACKGROUND: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the standard treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The incidence of postoperative urethral stricture (US) and urinary incontinence remains clinically important, and their predictors are not fully established. This study aimed to determine the incidence of these complications and identify associated risk factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at Al-Zahra Hospital, Isfahan, Iran, between 2020 and 2023. A total of 110 male patients with BPH who underwent TURP and completed 6 months of

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this was to examine the effect of bladder training on bladder functions.
BACKGROUND: Urinary catheterization is frequently performed in order to evaluate the outcomes of the surgical procedures and to monitor the urine output after urology operations.
DESIGN AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in the urology clinic in Istanbul, Turkey in which 50 males were nonrandomly assigned to either a bladder training (n = 28) or a control group (n =22). In the bladder training groups, the urinary catheters of the patients were clamped at 4-hr interval

Introduction: Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) remains the gold standard for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, but it is associated with complications. The association of health care resource utilization (HRU) and TURP has been poorly studied. We seek to evaluate HRU in patients undergoing TURP and identify factors contributing to outcomes. Methods: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was reviewed from 2012 to 2018 for TURP by Current Procedural Terminology code. All data will be deidentified with IRB exemption. HRU was defined as discharge

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize recent knowledge from experimental studies and randomized clinical trials in benign prostate hyperplasia that compare bipolar with monopolar transurethral resection, with an emphasis on morbidity.
RECENT FINDINGS: Bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate has a urodynamically proven efficacy to relieve bladder outlet obstruction, which seems to be durable in time with low long-term complication rates. The haemostatic capacity of bipolar current is shown to be superior in ex-vivo studies. Postoperative bleeding and blood transfusion rates are similar. Clot

A retrospective analysis of 127 of 146 consecutive patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate from February 1985 to January 1988 (3-year period) was performed. The catheter was removed on postoperative day 1 in 66 patients (group I) and on postoperative day 2 in 61 patients (group II). There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of population age, weight of resected glands, operative time, and management. Both groups I and II had 8 complications following catheter removal. Postoperative hospital stay was reduced by an average of 1.37 days in group I.

Thirty consecutive patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy St. I-II (adenom weight < 25g) were treated either by balloon dilatation (Group I) or transurethral resection (group II). Peak flow, residual urine and voided urine did not improve after balloon dilatation in a follow-up of 9 months. In contrast peak flow enhanced after TUR-P from 10.4 ml/sec. to 21.9 ml/sec. Residual urine reduced from 65 ml to 30. In group I obstructive symptom score (6.1 > 4.5) and irritative symptom score (5.5 > 3.6) decreased after 9 months, TUR-P resulted in a greater reduction of obstructive score (7.4 > 1.6)

Transurethral prostatic resection for obstructive uropathy often yields malignant tissue in a significant number of patients with prostatic carcinoma. A comparison of the diagnostic accuracy of transurethral prostatectomy and transrectal prostatic biopsy in 139 patients who had both procedures demonstrated no significant difference. It is suggested that patients with obstruction and suspected prostatic carcinoma, who are not candidates for curative treatment, should have transurethral prostatectomy to relieve the obstruction and to confirm the diagnosis simultaneously.

Background: Following transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for lower urinary tract symptoms, incidental diagnosis of prostate cancer occurs in 2-10%. The significance of incidental prostate cancer on TURP compared to diagnosis via traditional diagnostic pathways is unclear. We aimed to compare post-prostatectomy outcomes in patients diagnosed with prostate cancer on TURP and prostate biopsy, using a population-based clinical quality registry. Methods: Data were extracted from the Victorian Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry (PCOR-Vic). Patients who underwent prostatectomy between Sept

BACKGROUND: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) remains the gold standard surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in neurologically intact men. However, determining when TURP is appropriate in men with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) remains a persistent clinical challenge due to heterogeneous neurologic conditions and variable bladder and sphincter function.
METHODS: A narrative review of the literature was performed using PubMed and relevant reference lists to evaluate outcomes of TURP in men with NLUTD. Studies involving major neurologic cond
