Giant intracranial Brucella abscess is a severe and rare central nervous system infection whose pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. We detail the case of a 75-years-old urban male without Brucella exposure history who presented with fever and headache. Initial attribution of cephalgia to head trauma delayed diagnosis and treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging, metagenomic next-generation sequencing, and cerebrospinal fluid culture confirmed rapid development of a giant Brucella abscess (31 mm × 58 mm) within 2 weeks after head trauma. Head trauma may be potentially associated with the

Molecular changes caused by sensory trauma and subsequent structural alterations of the central nervous system are only beginning to be identified. In most cases, the generation of tinnitus can be linked to damage of the peripheral auditory system, probably even in cases where hearing impairment cannot be assessed by audiometry. Within a common view, acoustic trauma and salicylate induce abnormal excitability at the level of the brainstem, subcortical and cortical level that may be related to tinnitus. The present review summarizes studies emphasizing a crucial role of molecular events that oc

Spinal cord injury (SCI) damages multiple structures at the lesion site, including ascending, descending, and propriospinal axons; interrupting the conduction of information up and down the spinal cord. Additionally, axons associated with the autonomic nervous system that control involuntary physiological functions course through the spinal cord. Moreover, sympathetic, and parasympathetic preganglionic neurons reside in the spinal cord. Thus, depending on the level of an SCI, autonomic function can be greatly impacted by the trauma resulting in dysfunction of various organs. For example, SCI c

Initially discovered as a potent neurite outgrowth inhibitor in the central nervous system (CNS), Nogo-A has emerged as a multifunctional protein. Involvement of this protein has been demonstrated in numerous developmental processes, ranging from cell migration, axon guidance and fasciculation, dendritic branching and CNS plasticity to oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelination. Although initially necessary and beneficial for shaping and later maintaining CNS structure and functionality, the growth restricting properties of Nogo-A can have negative effects on nervous system injury or dise

Rodeos are popular sporting events in the southern and western United States, and bull riders sustain 37% of all rodeo-related injuries--more than participants in any other rodeo event. During 1994-1995 in Louisiana, five cases of central nervous system trauma associated with riding bulls in rodeo events were identified through the Louisiana Central Nervous System Injury Registry, a statewide, population-based surveillance system addressing brain and spinal cord injury incidence, etiology, and outcome. To further characterize these injury events, the Office of Public Health, Louisiana Departme

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter jejuni is a common cause of acute gastroenteritis, but central nervous system infections are rare manifestations of Campylobacter infection. Therefore, C. jejuni trauma-related subdural hygroma infection in children is poorly described in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We described a 2-year old boy with lobar holoprosencephaly presenting with subdural hygroma following head trauma. C. jejuni infection was confirmed from a subdural hygroma sample by culture as well as by DNA sequencing of a broad range 16S rDNA PCR product. Cerebrospinal fluid from the ventriculop

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a heterogeneous psychiatric disorder that affects individuals exposed to trauma and is highly co-morbid with other adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease and obesity. The unique pathophysiological feature of PTSD is the inability to inhibit fear responses, such that individuals suffering from PTSD re-experience traumatic memories and are unable to control psychophysiological responses to trauma-associated stimuli. However, underlying alterations in sympathetic nervous system activity, neuroendocrine systems, and metabolism associated w

OBJECTIVES: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder of the inner ear with a high rate of recurrence. Vascular disorders, migraine and autoimmune disorders have been considered facilitating factors for relapsing episodes. Our aim was to assess the role of vascular disorders, migraine and anti-thyroid antibodies in patients with recurrences.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed records of 3042 patients treated for BPPV without other lifetime vertigo. Clinical data included previous vascular disorders of the central nervous system, heart disorders, migraine and recent head trau

True precocious puberty is frequently secondary to intrinsic central nervous system pathology, but is rare following external head trauma. We describe two children who developed precocious puberty within three months of severe exogenous head trauma. Infusion of luteinizing hormone releasing factor induced a prompt rise in circulating gonadotropin concentrations and established that their sexual precocity was the result of premature activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. While the precise mechanism by which exogenous head trauma causes precocious puberty remains unknown, the clinical fe

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The skeletal system is one of the main targets of endocrine hormone dysregulation. After briefly summarizing the endocrinal regulation of the skeleton, this review focuses on the recent advances in our understanding of how endocrine dysregulations promote the development of heterotopic bones after trauma.
RECENT FINDINGS: Endocrinal regulation of skeletal fetal development, and growth is well established. However, whether trauma such as central nervous system insults, hip arthroplasty and severe burns trigger heterotopic ossifications via hormonal dysregulation has just beg

Peripheral nerves can acquire damage through trauma, demyelinating diseases, inflammatory or immune-mediated insults, cancer, metabolic disorders, medications, toxins, and others. Damage may occur to motor, sensory, or pain fibres, or a combination, resulting in dysfunction to movement execution, sensory perception, and pain processing. Electrodiagnostic studies of the peripheral nerves, muscles, and spinal reflexes can be used to diagnose peripheral nerve damage, detect resultant changes in the central nervous system, and track the progress of neural repair or deterioration. Through interacti

BACKGROUND: FK-506 is used in organ transplantation because it promotes neurite outgrowth in vitro and enhances neuroregeneration in peripheral nerve injury transection models. Immunosuppressive mechanisms of FK-506 are well defined, with demonstration of decreased neuroregenerative effects with delayed administration. The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of preinjury administration of FK-506 in rats with tibial nerve transection injury.
METHODS: Eight inbred male Lewis rats per group in three separate groups underwent tibial nerve transection with primary repair. Group I rec

BACKGROUND: The past century has seen improvement in trauma care, with a resulting decrease in therapeutically preventable deaths. We hypothesize that further major reduction in injury mortality will be obtained through injury prevention, rather than improvements in therapy.
METHODS: Seven hundred fifty-three deaths in an American College of Surgeons-verified, Level I trauma center were reviewed as they occurred. Deaths were classified as therapeutically not preventable, possibly preventable, or preventable. These charts were also reviewed for factors that might have prevented or lessened the

Consistent with differences in behaviors between sexes, studies reveal sex differences in the organization of neural circuits, synaptic function, and neuronal excitability, as well as sex-dependent recruitment of specific neuronal subtypes during behavior. These studies demonstrate sex differences in cell numbers, brain region volumes, cellular composition of brain areas, and density and strength of synapses in many brain regions, innervation of neuronal subtypes, receptor-mediated transduction mechanisms, neurotransmitter and neuropeptide release, and the influence of neuronal growth factors.

The prevalence of closed-system central nervous system (CNS) injuries underscores the need for an enhanced understanding of these traumas to improve protective and therapeutic interventions. Crucial to this research are animal models that replicate closed-system CNS injuries. In this context, a custom overpressure air system was engineered to reproduce a range of closed-system CNS injuries in murine models, including ocular, brain, and spinal cord trauma. To date, the system has been used to administer eye-, head-, or spine-directed overpressure air to model anteroposterior pole injury in the

A high frequency of meningeal lesions was found at autopsy in foals dying perinatally. Such lesions are considered an index of injury to the fetal central nervous system, from trauma and/or hypoxia during birth. Their incidence in the sample examined (26 foals) is similar to that observed in the perinatal mortality of lambs and calves.
