Altered Cardiomyocyte Function and Trypanosoma cruzi Persistence in Chagas Disease.

Chagas disease, caused by the triatominae Trypanosoma cruzi, is one of the leading causes of heart malfunctioning in Latin America. The cardiac phenotype is observed in 20-30% of infected people 10-40 years after their primary infection. The cardiac complications during Chagas disease range from cardiac arrhythmias to heart failure, with important involvement of the right ventricle. Interestingly, no studies have evaluated the electrical properties of right ventricle myocytes during Chagas disease and correlated them to parasite persistence. Taking advantage of a murine model of Chagas disease

Systematics of Mepraia (Hemiptera-Reduviidae): cytogenetic and molecular variation.

The haematophagous insects of the subfamily Triatominae (Hemiptera-Reduviidae) have great epidemiological importance as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. Mepraia was originally described as a monotypic genus comprised of Mepraia spinolai, distributed along coastal areas of northern Chile (from Region I to the Metropolitan Region). Recently, some M. spinolai populations have been ranked as a new species named Mepraia gajardoi. Several populations along the distribution range of the genus were sampled, and genetic differentiation was studied based upon the anal

Eco-epidemiological Insights into Psammolestes arthuri: Trypanosoma cruzi Infection and Feeding Behavior in Casanare, Colombia.

Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affects millions of people and is primarily transmitted by triatomine bugs. Although Psammolestes arthuri has been traditionally classified as a secondary vector due to its predominantly ornithophilic feeding habits, recent findings suggest that its ecological and behavioral traits may enhance its epidemiological relevance. We hypothesized that P. arthuri exhibits natural infection rates, flexible feeding behavior with frequent mammalian contacts, and spatial variation in parasite load that challenge its conventional classific

Survivorship of wild caught Mepraia spinolai nymphs: The effect of seasonality and Trypanosoma cruzi infection after feeding and fasting in the laboratory.

Chagas disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. Vector survival is an important variable affecting vectorial capacity to determine parasite transmission risk. The aims of this study are to evaluate vector survival under fasting/starvation conditions of wild-caught Mepraia spinolai after feeding and fasting, the pathogenicity of T. cruzi infection, the parasite burden and seasonal variation in parasite discrete typing units (DTU). The survivorship of M. spinolai nymphs after two continuous artificial feedings was evaluated, assessing their infection with microscopic observation of fecal samples

The role of dirt floors and of firewood in rural dwellings in the epidemiology of Chagas' disease in Costa Rica.

In an endemic area of Chagas' disease in Costa Rica, 50 houses infested with Triatoma dimidiata were re-examined after a period of 14-17 years. Criteria used were two socioeconomic parameters which are closely associated with the presence of the bugs: colonies of triatomines inside houses are favored by the presence of a dirt floor, and stored firewood is an excellent refuge for insects outdoors. Indoor infestation was completely eliminated from nine of 13 houses in which the floors had been changed from dirt to concrete during this period, and nearly eliminated from the other four, supporting

Molecular identification of Coranus spp. in a pregnant patient: A case of misidentified Chagas disease vector in Spain.

Chagas disease is a significant public health concern in the Americas, transmitted primarily by vectors of the Triatominae subfamily. While Europe, particularly Spain, is free from endemic vectors, the potential for misidentification of non-hematophagous insects as Chagas vectors exists, leading to unnecessary alarm. We present the case of a 31-year-old pregnant Venezuelan woman residing in Spain, who sought medical attention after being bitten by an arthropod she identified as Triatoma infestans. The patient's awareness of Chagas disease in her country of origin heightened her concern about v

Chagas vectors Panstrongylus chinai (Del Ponte, 1929) and Panstrongylus howardi (Neiva, 1911): chromatic forms or true species?

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is a parasitic infection transmitted by "kissing bugs" (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) that has a huge economic impact in Latin American countries. The vector species with the upmost epidemiological importance in Ecuador are Rhodnius ecuadoriensis (Lent & Leon, 1958) and Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811). However, other species such as Panstrongylus howardi (Neiva, 1911) and Panstrongylus chinai (Del Ponte, 1929) act as secondary vectors due to their growing adaptation to domestic structures and their ability to transmit the parasite to humans. The latter two

The burden of Chagas disease: estimates and challenges.

Chagas disease, caused by infection with the protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi is transmitted most often by Triatominae insect vectors, but also through blood transfusion, organ transplant, and congenital transmission. Between 5 and 18 million people are currently infected and the infection is estimated to cause more than 10,000 deaths annually. The disease has 3 phases: acute, indeterminate, and chronic. The acute phase immediately follows infection. It is typically asymptomatic but produces fever and malaise in up to 5% of people. The indeterminate phase is asymptomatic. More than one-half of those

Household model of Chagas disease vectors (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) considering domestic, peridomestic, and sylvatic vector populations.

ABSTRACT Disease transmission is difficult to model because most vectors and hosts have different generation times. Chagas disease is such a situation, where insect vectors have 1-2 generations annually and mammalian hosts, including humans, can live for decades. The hemataphagous triatominae vectors (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) of the causative parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) usually feed on sleeping hosts, making vector infestation of houses, peridomestic areas, and wild animal burrows a central factor in transmission. Because of difficulties with different generatio

Geographical distribution of Trypanosoma cruzi in triatomine vectors in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: This work presents the initial findings of a molecular epidemiological investigation of Trypanosoma cruzi in triatomine insects in State of Mato Grosso do Sul. METHODS: A total of 511 triatomines from different regions of the state were examined. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted from the intestinal contents of the insects using phenol-chloroform-isoamyl alcohol (25:24:1). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers 121/122 targeting DNA kinetoplast (kDNA) was then performed to identify T. cruzi, and positive samples were subjected to PCR using the primer pair TcSC5D-F

Study on Chagas disease occurrence in the municipality of Monte Negro, State of Rondônia, Brazilian Amazon.

INTRODUCTION: Studies on Chagas disease deal with the perspective of its occurrence in the Amazon region, which is directly correlated to the population growth and the spread of the bug biotope. The state of Rondônia has an immense source of vectors (Triatomine) and reservoirs of Trypanosoma cruzi. Environmental changes brought forth by the deforestation in the region may cause vector behavior changes and bring these vectors to a closer contact with humans, increasing the probability of vector infection. METHODS: This study was carried out to check the occurrence of Chagas disease in the muni

American Trypanosomiasis (Chagas Disease).

American trypanosomiasis is caused by a parasite endemic of the Americas. Current migration has globalized Chagas disease. Acute infection usually resolves spontaneously. Nonetheless, 20% to 40% develop cardiomyopathy 20 to 30 years later. Progression to cardiomyopathy is devastatingly rapid, manifesting with heart failure and sudden death. Etiologic treatment is highly effective and recommended in those with acute infections, congenital infections, and parasite reactivation, and women of childbearing age, but in asymptomatic Trypanosoma cruzi carriers and patients with early cardiomyopathy re

Bug Smash, Bug Splash: A Case Report of an Unusual Transmission of American Trypanosomiasis with a Brief Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND Chagas disease is a chronic parasitosis transmitted by the inoculation of infected triatomine feces into wounds or conjunctival sac, transfusion, congenitally, organ transplantation, and ingestion of contaminated food. The disease is classified into an acute and chronic phase; the latter is a life-long infection that can be asymptomatic or progress to cardiac or digestive complications. CASE REPORT We report a case of acute-phase Chagas disease, transmitted by the splash of gut content from an infected triatomine into the conjunctival mucosa. CONCLUSIONS The diagnosis of Chagas dise

[Enfermedad de Chagas en México].

Chagas disease, which is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is considered to be the most serious parasitic disease in America. It is transmitted mainly by triatominae ("kissing bugs"). Mazzoti reported the first two human cases in Mexico. The form of transmission is by parasites entering the organism in feces of the insect, by blood transfusion, from mother to child, by organ transplant and laboratory accidents. In Mexico, 1.1 million people are estimated to be infected; the incidence in 2012 was 0.70 per 1,00,000 population. In 2017, the highest incidence rates were registered in Yucatán, Oaxaca an

Influence of the quality and quantity of blood ingested on reproductive parameters and life-span in Triatoma infestans (Klug).

In Triatominae, female fecundity and fertility may be affected by age, adult nutritional status (i.e., blood meal source and amount of blood ingested) and number of matings. Triatoma infestans (Klug) is the main vector of Chagas disease in southern South America and considering that reproductive success is intimately associated with the potential for colonizing or re-colonizing new ecotopes in endemic areas, we studied whether the blood meal source and the amount of blood ingested have influence on reproductive parameters. We constitute two groups: couples feeding regularly on guinea pigs and

Presence of intradomicile colonies of the triatomine bug Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus in Muñecas, La Paz, Bolivia.

Chagas disease is a tropical parasitic disease endemic to Latin America which affects more than 10 million people, and kills more than 15,000 people each year. This condition, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is principally transmitted by kissing bugs (Triatominae). In Bolivia, recent reports by the Departmental Health Service showed the presence of Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus in dwellings located in the Charazani Valley (La Paz). A study was then carried out in the area to evaluate the degree of domiciliation of this species, and its possible role in the transmission of
