Ascaris lumbricoides infection induces both, reduction and increase of asthma symptoms in a rural community.

Several studies, in different populations and environments, have shown that severe and light helminthiases diminish and increase allergy symptoms, respectively. However, data on the simultaneous presence of these contrary effects in a single community is lacking. In a rural community from Colombia, effects of helminthiases on allergy were evaluated. In the study population, age and gender-adjusted prevalence of asthma and rhinitis symptoms in the last year was 14.6% and 34.1%, respectively (N = 739). By stool exam, ascariasis and trichuriasis were 62.5% and 35.7%, respectively. Significant odd

An Unpleasant Souvenir: Whipworm as an Incidental Finding During a Screening Colonoscopy.

Trichuriasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Trichuris trichiura that spreads through the ingestion of embryonated eggs in contaminated soil, water, or food. In nonendemic areas, T trichiura infestation is very rare and sporadic and is often diagnosed in immigrants from endemic countries such as the Philippines. Whipworms feed on human blood and also erode the colonic mucosa, thereby evoking an inflammatory response. In milder forms, trichuriasis can be asymptomatic and often an incidental diagnosis on screening colonoscopy. Heavily infested patients usually present with abdominal pa

Nutritional aspects of infection.

Current knowledge is examined about the means whereby ascariasis, hookworm disease, strongyloidiasis and trichuriasis may contribute to the aetiology of human malnutrition. Results from experiments with related parasites in the laboratory have demonstrated the role of gastrointestinal helminthiases in animal malnutrition. Some evidence shows that in children, infection with the intestinal stages of Ascaris lumbricoides is associated with reduced growth rate, disturbed nitrogen balance, malabsorption of vitamin A, abnormal fat digestion, lactose maldigestion and an increased intestinal transit

Efficacy of different albendazole and mebendazole regimens against heavy-intensity Trichuris trichiura infections in school children, Jimma Town, Ethiopia.

Recent studies have shown that the efficacy of benzimidazole drugs is influenced by the intensity of trichuriasis. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of albendazole (ALB) and mebendazole (MBZ) administered randomly for 1 (ALB×1 and MBZ×1) or 2 days (ALB×2 and MBZ×2) to 385 school children with heavy-intensity trichuriasis (mean faecal egg counts (FEC) >1000 eggs per gram of stool (epg)) in Jimma Town, Ethiopia. The efficacies (95% confidence intervals) by means of reduction in faecal egg counts (FECs) were 29·3% (-9·9-56·2), 60·0% (48·5-70·9), 73·5% (64·2-81·3

An antagonist of the retinoid X receptor reduces the viability of Trichuris muris in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Trichuriasis is a parasitic disease caused by the human whipworm, Trichuris trichiura. It affects millions worldwide, particularly in the tropics. This nematode parasite burrows into the colonic epithelium resulting in inflammation and morbidity, especially in children. Current treatment relies mainly on general anthelmintics such as mebendazole but resistance to these drugs is increasingly problematic. Therefore, new treatments are urgently required. METHODS: The prospect of using the retinoid X receptor (RXR) antagonist HX531 as a novel anthelmintic was investigated by carrying

Clear genetic distinctiveness between human- and pig-derived Trichuris based on analyses of mitochondrial datasets.

The whipworm, Trichuris trichiura, causes trichuriasis in ∼600 million people worldwide, mainly in developing countries. Whipworms also infect other animal hosts, including pigs (T. suis), dogs (T. vulpis) and non-human primates, and cause disease in these hosts, which is similar to trichuriasis of humans. Although Trichuris species are considered to be host specific, there has been considerable controversy, over the years, as to whether T. trichiura and T. suis are the same or distinct species. Here, we characterised the entire mitochondrial genomes of human-derived Trichuris and pig-derived

Characterisation of Trichuris incognita n sp in Côte d'Ivoire: a morphological, genomic, and genome-wide association with drug sensitivity study.

BACKGROUND: Trichuriasis is a neglected tropical disease that affects up to 500 million individuals and can cause considerable morbidity. For decades, trichuriasis was thought to be caused by one species of whipworm, Trichuris trichiura. The aim of this study was to investigate the origin of differences in response rates to the best available anthelmintic treatment for trichuriasis-a combination of albendazole and ivermectin-in Côte d'Ivoire by analysing the parasite population. METHODS: In this morphological, genomic, and genome-wide association study (GWAS) with drug sensitivity we used lon

Hidden diversity in Trichuris control.

Recent advances in combination therapies have improved trichuriasis treatment, yet efficacy remains highly variable. Emerging genomic, clinical, and epidemiological evidence suggests that this variability may reflect hidden biological diversity rather than operational factors alone. Recognizing this complexity is essential to align control strategies with parasite biology and achieve sustainable outcomes.

Antibody isotype responses to Trichuris infection in humanized SCID mice.

We have developed a humanized SCID mouse model of trichuriasis involving the injection of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) from normal healthy donors into C. B. 17 severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice followed by vaccination and infection of these mice with the murine species of Trichuris, Trichuris muris. Optimal results with respect to parasite specific antibody production and peripheral engraftment were achieved by injecting intraperitoneally 2 x 10(7) PBLs which had been incubated overnight on anti-human CD3 coated plates. Mice were immunized three weeks post reconstitution with

Whipworm secretions and their roles in host-parasite interactions.

Whipworm (Trichuris) is a genus of roundworms that causes gastrointestinal infections in humans and animals. Of particular interest are T. trichiura, the causative agent of human trichuriasis, a neglected tropical disease that affects 477 million people worldwide, and T. suis, the pig whipworm species, responsible for growth stunting and economic losses within the agricultural industry. The naturally occurring mouse whipworm, T. muris, has been used for decades as a model for trichuriasis, yielding knowledge on the biology of these parasites and the host response to infection. Global progress towards eliminating gastrointestinal helminth infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To highlight the gastrointestinal helminths in the context of renewed global commitment to control or eliminate neglected tropical diseases in the coming decade. RECENT FINDINGS: Two key documents, namely the 2012 London Declaration for Neglected Tropical Diseases and the 2013 World Health Assembly resolution, emphasize the importance of mass drug administration (MDA) for controlling several key neglected tropical diseases. These documents, together with the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, establish the major gastrointestinal helminth infections, including the soil-tra
