[Intestinal enzyme activity in patients with strongyloidiasis].

Enterokinase and alkaline phosphatase activities in the duodenal juice and fecal extract of 37 strongyloidosis patients living in moderate climate and 17 inhabitants of the tropics have been studied. In 60.7% inhabitants of the regions with moderate climate and 80% from the tropics decreased enterokinase activity in duodenal juice has been observed, while the decrease in alkaline phosphatase activity in fecal extract has been noted in 87.8% and 71.4% cases, respectively. After convalescence from 1 to 6 months, no normalization of intestinal enzymatic activity has been observed.

Genetic differentiation of strongyloides stercoralis from two different climate zones revealed by 18S ribosomal DNA sequence comparison.

Over 70 countries in tropical and subtropical zones are endemic areas for Strongyloides stercoralis, with a higher prevalence of the parasite often occurring in tropical regions compared to subtropical ones. In order to explore genetic variations of S. stercoralis form different climate zones, 18S ribosomal DNA of parasite specimens obtained from Thailand were sequenced and compared with those from Japan. The maximum likelihood indicates that S. stercoralis populations from these two different climate zones have genetically diverged. The genetic relationship between S. stercoralis populations

Hurricane disturbance results in positive effects on tropical stream meiofauna abundance and richness.

Hurricanes are major natural disturbances that significantly influence tropical ecosystems. While most research focuses on large-bodied organisms, understanding the impact of hurricanes on small-bodied biota, such as meiofauna, is crucial, especially as climate change models predict more frequent and intense storms. Puerto Rico offers a unique setting to study these effects, as hurricanes and tropical storms are frequent. This research examined the short- (Post-Hurricane A) and medium-term (Post-Hurricane B) impacts of Hurricanes Irma and María (September 2017) on stream meiofaunal communities

Global vulnerability assessment of mobile telecommunications infrastructure to climate hazards using crowdsourced open data.

Climate change is intensifying coastal flooding, riverine flooding and tropical cyclones, yet risks to telecommunications infrastructure remain poorly quantified despite growing societal dependence on digital connectivity. We present a global, event-based geospatial assessment of mobile cellular infrastructure vulnerability, combining open crowdsourced asset data with global climate hazard models under historical conditions and future scenarios, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. We analyse approximately 19.7 million mobile basestations globally, estimating exposure and direct damage across a range of event r

Spinal arthritis in invasive cane toads is linked to rate of dispersal as well as to latitude.

Initial research on the spread of cane toads (Rhinella marina) through tropical Australia reported a high incidence of spinal arthritis (spondylosis) in toads at the invasion front (where toads disperse rapidly), but not in areas colonized earlier (where toads are more sedentary). The idea that spondylosis was a cost of rapid dispersal was challenged by wider spatial sampling which linked rates of spondylosis to hot (tropical) climates rather than to dispersal rates. Here, the authors of these competing interpretations collaborate to reinterpret the data. Our reanalysis supports both previous

Ethnomedicinal and ecological status of plants in Garhwal Himalaya, India.

BACKGROUND: The northern part of India harbours a great diversity of medicinal plants due to its distinct geography and ecological marginal conditions. The traditional medical systems of northern India are part of a time tested culture and honored still by people today. These traditional systems have been curing complex disease for more than 3,000 years. With rapidly growing demand for these medicinal plants, most of the plant populations have been depleted, indicating a lack of ecological knowledge among communities using the plants. Thus, an attempt was made in this study to focus on the eco

Vaccines in a time of global boiling and megacities.

Neglected tropical diseases are accelerating because of climate change and urbanization to create new clusters of vast urban areas beset by poverty and environmental degradation. These hot and contaminated megacities could enable the rise of parasitic and other tropical infections. A new generation of antiparasitic vaccines will be needed.

Extreme hydrological events shape temporal dynamics of schistosomiasis in the Amazon.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease whose transmission is strongly influenced by environmental and hydrological conditions. In tropical regions, increasing climate variability and the intensification of extreme events raise important questions regarding how long-term climatic conditions and hydrological disturbances shape disease dynamics. This study investigated the temporal association between schistosomiasis incidence, mean annual temperature, accumulated annual precipitation, and flooding occurrence over a 25-year time series (2000-2024) in an Amazonian municipality. Annual con

Simultaneous Automated Insect Monitoring Across a Remote Tropical Elevation Gradient With Mothbox.

Insect declines have been recorded in many parts of the world, however, the vast majority of taxa and ecosystems, particularly in the tropics, remain poorly documented. Monitoring insects in the tropics is challenging due to their immense diversity, and the limited resources for research. It is therefore crucial to maximally leverage existing scientific capacity. In complement to DNA-based approaches, or as an alternative that bypasses some of their shortcomings, automated, passive insect monitoring devices are a new tool that can assess insect diversity with standardization and scalability. Hidden decay of live trees in a tropical rain forest.

The trunks of forest trees store massive amounts of carbon, but fungi actively and invisibly decay wood inside even seemingly healthy trees. Wood-decay fungi are responsible for the loss of stored carbon in living trees, and they make trees susceptible to snapping and uprooting in storms. We used sonic tomography to measure the prevalence and severity of decay in 1744 live trees (≥20 cm diameter) of 171 species on the 50-ha Forest Dynamics Plot on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. A median of <2% of the cross-sectional trunk area showed decay, but 15% of trees had >20% decay. Twenty percent of th

Unprecedented tropical cyclone in temperate-boreal ecotone drives declines in emergent conifers and canopy complexity.

Poleward shifts in tropical cyclone (TC) activity have introduced unprecedented disturbances to Northeast Asia's boreal and temperate-boreal ecotone forests. As TCs migrate northward, they increasingly influence previously unaffected regions, yet their impacts on forest structure and species composition remain poorly understood. This study examines TC Maysak (2020), the most intense cyclone recorded in the ecotone forests near the Chinese-Russian border, and its effects on tree vulnerability and canopy structure. Using high-resolution drone-based orthophotographs, we analyzed fallen tree dimen

Are hotspots and frequencies of heat waves changing over time? Exploring causes of heat waves in a tropical country.

Heat waves significantly impact people's lives and livelihoods and are becoming very alarming and recognized as hot topics worldwide, including in Bangladesh. However, much less is understood regarding recent hotspots, the frequency of heat waves over time, and their underlying causes in Bangladesh. The objective of the study is to explore the current scenario and frequency of heat waves and their possible causes across Bangladesh. The Mann-Kendall and Sen's slope techniques were used to determine seasonal and annual temperature trend patterns of heat wave frequencies. Daily maximum temperatur

Structural heart disease in the tropics: A comprehensive review.

Structural heart disease (SHD) remains a significant global health challenge, disproportionately impacting populations in tropical regions where the burden of infectious diseases, limited healthcare infrastructure, and socio-economic disparities exacerbate the issue. The tropics are uniquely affected by conditions such as rheumatic heart disease (RHD), endomyocardial fibrosis, tropical cardiomyopathies, and pericardial diseases, often resulting from or complicated by endemic infections like malaria, dengue, tuberculosis, and parasitic diseases. Moreover, Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Associated

The role of morphological traits in predicting the functional ecology of arboreal and ground ants in the Cerrado-Amazon transition.

There is often a vertical stratification of the vegetation in tropical forests, where each forest stratum has a unique set of environmental conditions, including marked differences in habitat heterogeneity, physical complexity, and microclimate. Additionally, many tropical forests are highly seasonal, and we need to consider the temporal variation in environmental conditions when assessing the functional aspects of their organisms. Here, we tested the hypothesis that vertical stratification and seasonality shape tropical ants' functional ecology and that there are differences in the functional

Canopy phenology of a dry forest in western Brazil.

Dry forests are common, although highly threatened in the Neotropics. Their ecological processes are mostly influenced by rainfall pattern, hence their cycles exhibit contrasting phases. We studied the phenology of canopy trees in a primary dry forest in Western Brazil in the foothills of the Urucum mountain chain, in order to improve our knowledge on the functioning of these poorly-known forests. Leaf shedding started in the early dry season and was massive in the latter part of this period. Most leaf loss occurred in dry hills, while wet valleys remained evergreen. Anemochorich and autochori

Tungiasis and myiasis.

Tungiasis and myiasis are common ectoparasitic infestations that occur in developing countries in the tropics, particularly where poverty and poor standards of basic hygiene exist. The growth in international travel to and from these regions has led to an increase in the presentation of these conditions in nonendemic countries. Despite recent progress in the treatment and prevention of tungiasis and myiasis, diagnosis can present a challenge to those unfamiliar with these conditions, especially when they present in nonendemic countries. Tungiasis is caused by the penetration of the female sand
