Narrowing of the retroaortic space after repair of common arterial trunk (CAT) with interrupted aortic arch (IAA) is a well-known issue. We present a newborn with CAT, IAA, and functionally univentricular heart (tricuspid atresia) who underwent repair of CAT, IAA, and left ventricle-to-pulmonary artery (LV-to-PA) conduit placement with the Lecompte maneuver. The patient suffered from left bronchus compression postoperatively, which was relieved by tracheobronchial release.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the outcomes of patients with a quadricuspid truncal valve (TV) and durability of TV repair.
METHOD: We reviewed 56 patients with truncus arteriosus and a quadricuspid TV who underwent complete repair between 1979 and 2018.
RESULTS: TV insufficiency was present in 39 patients (mild, n = 22; moderate, n = 14; and severe, n = 3). Fourteen patients had concomitant TV surgery. Early mortality in patients who had concomitant TV surgery was 14% (2 out of 14 patients) and overall survival was 77.1% ± 11.7% at 15 years. Freedom from TV reoperation was 30.3% ± 14.6% at 15 year

Cardiac catheterisation continues to play an important role in the long-term management of patients with common arterial trunk and transposition of the great arteries. Although non-invasive imaging has largely eliminated the need for diagnostic catheterisation in newborns with these congenital cardiac lesions, cardiac catheterisation is an important tool for the diagnosis of a variety of problems encountered after surgical intervention, and allows interventions to be performed when feasible. We review the indications for cardiac catheterisation and describe the specifics for various interventi

Prenatal diagnosis of truncus arteriosus with two-dimensional sonography requires expertise in fetal echocardiography. Indeed, truncus arteriosus shares with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) the sonographic finding of a single arterial trunk overriding a VSD. The diagnosis of truncus arteriosus can be confirmed when either the main pulmonary artery or its branches are visualized arising from the truncus itself. This requires sequential examination of multiple scanning planes and a process of mental reconstruction of their spatial relationships. T

Described are the clinical, cross-sectional echocardiographic, electrocardiographic and angiographic findings, together with the results at autopsy, in a 5-month old infant with a common arterial trunk associated with an atrioventricular septal defect. As far as is known, this is only the 13th such case to be reported in the literature. A particularly unusual feature of this case was an intact atrial component of the atrioventricular septal defect.

Pregnancy in women with repaired truncus arteriosus (TA) is rare. We report the outcomes of 8 pregnancies in 4 women with surgically repaired TA. None of the women had adverse cardiac events during pregnancy. Two pregnancies, both in the same woman, were complicated by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The birth weight was less than the 10th percentile for gestational age in 3 pregnancies. Although women with repaired TA can do well during pregnancy, they require careful preconception assessment and surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Despite improved surgical results for truncus arteriosus, overall mortality rates, remain higher than those reported for other complex congenital heart diseases, especially with truncal valve regurgitation or an interrupted aortic arch.
METHODS: Seventeen patients had complete repair of the truncus arteriosus at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation between August 1993 and June 1997. The age at operation ranged from 2 days to 4.5 years. Associated abnormalities included interrupted aortic arch in 3 patients and abnormal coronary artery anatomy in 3. Four patients had more than moderate

A two-stage surgical repair of a one-month-old infant with truncus arteriosus with unilateral absence of a proximal pulmonary artery (PA) with a closed ipsilateral ductus arteriosus was successfully performed. In the first palliation, translocation of the discontinuous, closed, and undeveloped PA to the adjacent area of the other PA was useful for making a pulmonary arterial confluence at timing of the subsequent radical operation.

BACKGROUND: Truncus arteriosus associated with complete atrioventricular canal defect is rare and continues to be a surgical challenge with high morbidity and mortality. In the absence of extension of the ventricular septal defect to the outlet septum, biventricular repair is precluded, and single ventricle palliation remains the only option. We present our experience with five patients with truncus arteriosus and complete atrioventricular canal defect who underwent single ventricular palliation.
METHODS: Five patients with truncus arteriosus and complete atrioventricular canal defect managed

Truncus arteriosus, interrupted aortic arch and amniotic band syndrome are rare conditions. We report a case of a 38-year-old pregnant woman who was diagnosed on a routine morphological ultrasound scan with a Van Praagh type A4 persistent truncus arteriosus with an aortic arch interruption type B and abnormal limbs (oedematous left hand, hypoplastic fingers on the right hand and right big toe amputation). Elective termination of the pregnancy was carried out and the pathological examination confirmed all the sonographic findings. Furthermore, an amniotic band parallel to the umbilical cord und

BACKGROUND: The true incidence of truncus arteriosus in underdeveloped countries is difficult to determine. This is due largely to underreporting as a result of nonavailability of technologically advanced facilities to make definitive diagnosis prenatally. There is a lack of data on the profile and outcome of patients with persistent truncus arteriosus (PTA) in Nigeria. This study aims to document the demographic characteristics, mode of presentation, indications for echocardiography, associated anomalies, average age at diagnosis, and outcome of patients with truncus arteriosus in our center.

CLINICAL DATA: Patient diagnosed with common arterial trunk, submitted to pulmonary artery banding in another center and lost to clinical follow-up. Referred to our center at four years old, extremely cyanotic. Chest radiography: Cardiomegaly; attenuated peripheral vascular markings. Electrocardiography: Right ventricular hypertrophy. Echocardiography: Common arterial trunk, but it was not possible to analyze all the structures. Computed tomography angiography: Van Praagh type A4 common arterial trunk. Extremely hypoplastic right and left pulmonary arteries.
DIAGNOSIS: Association of aortic a

OBJECTIVE: Until now, no study established a morphometric evaluation of the truncal valve dysplasia and a description of its different presentation patterns. Thus, authors conducted an anatomopathological study describing the gross features and histological findings of the truncal valve.
METHODS: 50 common arterial trunk (CAT) specimens were examined. The number of valvar leaflets was determined and valvar dysplasia was classified as absent, mild, moderate or severe. Selected leaflets were sectioned and submitted to histological analysis and linear measurements (thickness, length and area), b

Truncus arteriosus is an uncommon conotruncal anomaly, which is amenable to surgical correction. The systemic, pulmonary, and coronary circulations originate from a single arterial vessel that arises from the ventricular part of the heart and overrides the ventricular septum. The value of multidetector computed tomography with three-dimensional postprocessing lies in the detailed assessment of the presence or absence of the pulmonary arteries, including the number, origin, and branching patterns of major aortopulmonary collateral arteries, and extracardiac abnormalities such as aortic arch int

Hemitruncus is an uncommon congenital anomaly that has been described in isolation or in association with other congenital cardiac malformations. This report describes a rare case of left hemitruncus with tetralogy of Fallot and a right-sided aortic arch. The patient presented to us in the early second decade. The diagnosis was suspected with echocardiography and confirmed with cardiac catheterization. The patient underwent successful surgical correction of the anomaly.

BACKGROUND: Fetal and neonatal outcomes and factors increasing mortality risk in fetal truncus arteriosus are not well characterized. We aimed to examine the prenatally encountered cardiac spectrum, define extracardiac and genetic associations, explore clinical outcomes and identify prenatal factors associated with worse outcomes in a contemporary large cohort.
METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted via the Fetal Heart Society Research Collaborative including fetal truncus arteriosus cases encountered between January 1, 2010, and September 1, 2021, within 22 North Ame

Common arterial trunk is a congenital malformation that is relatively uncommon, representing 0.21-0.34% of congenital heart disease. Natural history, if not treated, leads to early death. Cardiac surgery has been modifying its natural course during the last 30 years by prolonging the lifespan of patients affected. Despite surgical mortality improvements over the last 10 years, morbidity still remains high, mainly due to the age of the patient, associated heart lesions, the evolution of truncal valve function and the type of conduit used for pulmonary artery reconstruction. Common arterial trun
