Fatal case of disseminated infection with the turtle bacillus Mycobacterium chelonae.

An apparently immunocompetent 78 year old woman presented with confusion, subcutaneous abscesses, and lesions of the nasopharynx. Gram positive, acid fast bacilli were isolated from her blood after 10 days' incubation. She was treated with trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole for presumed disseminated nocardiasis but deteriorated and died. A post mortem examination showed skin and pulmonary lesions and endomyocardial fibrous plaques. Organisms isolated from the skin and lung were indistinguishable from those cultured from the blood. The organism was subsequently identified as Mycobacterium chelonae.

Isolation and properties of sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) pituitary prolactin.

Sea turtle prolactin (PRL) was isolated in a highly purified state from sea turtle pituitary side fractions obtained from other studies and some of its biological, chemical, and immunological properties were determined. Sea turtle PRL is a protein of 22-24 kDa [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis]. Its sole amino terminal amino acid residue is leucine. The amino acid composition of sea turtle PRL is similar to ovine PRL and is characterized by a high content of aspartic acid (20 residues), glutamic acid (34 residues), serine (19 residues), and leucine (24 residues).

Susceptibility of two turtle species to eastern equine encephalitis virus.

Two species of turtle collected in southern New England were inoculated subcutaneously with eastern equine encephalitis virus. The spotted turtles (Clemmys guttata) developed viremia and neutralizing antibody after exposure to 3 logs or more of virus. Viremia was not detected in the eastern painted turtles (Chrysemys picta), and neutralizing antibody was detected in only 1 of 15 inoculated C. picta; however, since pre-inoculation serum was not obtained from this animal, the possibility of natural infection cannot be eliminated.

ATTEMPTS AT INFECTING RINGED TURTLE DOVES WITH VIRULENT Trichomonas gallinae.

Twenty Trichomonas -free ringed turtle doves ( Streptopelia risoria ) were inoculated per os with the highly virulent Jones' Barn strain of Trichomonas gallinae . None became infected. Three F1 females housed together were similarly inoculated with this strain and remained Trichomonas -positive for upwards of 182 days. They showed no disease and eventually lost their infections. These three positive females "mated" and laid several six-egg sets in a communal nest. At successive nestings they were given: 1) a fertile domestic pigeon ( Columba livia ) egg, and 2) two fertile ringed dove eggs, al

Sea Turtle Nesting Beach Fidelity Revealed by Satellite Tracking.

Site fidelity describes the tendency to return to or reuse familiar sites, yet some animals may use alternative sites while maintaining fidelity to primary locations, with consequences for population estimates as well as resilience to changing environments. Here we assessed and compared nesting beach fidelity of hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) on Frégate Island, Seychelles using data from beach foot patrols (2017-2025; n = 575 turtles) and satellite telemetry (2023; n = 10 turtles) and then examined the implications of fidelity strategies for population estimates. We also reviewed p

Mathematical Model Construction of the Bionic Irregular Surface of Turtle Shell.

The irregular surface morphology of the turtle shell can be applied to the design of the floating plate of a rice transplanter to mitigate the serious problems of mud and water resistance. An adult Brazilian turtle was selected as the research object in this study. A 7-axis absolute arm measuring machine and Geomagic Studio software were used to acquire and process point cloud data of the turtle's plastron. Based on the structural characteristics of the turtle shell, four curved surfaces with dense point cloud distributions were segmented, filtered using CATIA software, and exported as three-d

Kinematics Analysis and Gait Study of Bionic Turtle Crawling Mechanism.

Longer distance water delivery culverts pose obstacles such as deposited silt, stones, and dead trees. In this paper, a crawling robot is designed to mimic the joint structure of a turtle using bionic design principles. The mechanism and gait of the robot are analyzed. The kinematics model of the robot is established using the D-H method and analytical approach, while the dynamics model is established using Lagrange's method. Based on kinematics and dynamics analysis theory, compound cycloid and cubic polynomial motion trajectories for the robot foot are planned along with a crawling gait rese

Impact Resistant Structure Design and Optimization Inspired by Turtle Carapace.

The turtle carapace has a high level of protection, due to its unique biological structure, and there is great potential to use the turtle carapace structure to improve the impact resistance of composite materials using bionic theory. In this paper, the chemical elements of the turtle carapace structure, as well as its mechanical properties, were investigated by studying the composition of the compounds in each part. In addition, the bionic sandwich structure, composed of the plate, core, and backplate, was designed using modeling software based on the microstructure of the keratin scutes, spo

Induction of foxo3a protects turtle neurons against oxidative stress.

The detrimental effects of oxidative stress caused by the accumulation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) factor into aging, senescence and several neurodegenerative diseases. Mammalian models are extremely susceptible to the stresses that follow the restoration of oxygen after anoxia; however some organisms including the freshwater turtle Trachemys scripta can withstand extended anoxia and reoxygenation without apparent pathology. The ability of the turtle to withstand these conditions is thought to be linked to the upregulation of protective mechanisms such as heat shock proteins (HSP) as well

Isolated adult turtle brainstems exhibit central hypoxic chemosensitivity.

During hypoxia, red-eared slider turtles increase ventilation and decrease episodic breathing, but whether these responses are due to central mechanisms is not known. To test this question, isolated adult turtle brainstems were exposed to 240 min of hypoxic solution (bath PO2 = 32.6 ± 1.2 mmHg) and spontaneous respiratory-related motor bursts (respiratory event) were recorded on hypoglossal nerve roots. During hypoxia, burst frequency increased during the first 15 min, and then decreased during the remaining 35-240 min of hypoxia. Burst amplitude was maintained for 120 min, but then decreased

Morphological study on the olfactory systems of the snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina.

In this study, the olfactory system of a semi-aquatic turtle, the snapping turtle, has been morphologically investigated by electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and lectin histochemistry. The nasal cavity of snapping turtle was divided into the upper and lower chambers, lined by the sensory epithelium containing ciliated and non-ciliated olfactory receptor neurons, respectively. Each neuron expressed both Gαolf, the α-subunit of G-proteins coupling to the odorant receptors, and Gαo, the α-subunit of G-proteins coupling to the type 2 vomeronasal receptors. The axons originating from the u

Cutaneous fibroma in a captive common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina).

An adult female common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) had a mass on the plantar surface of the right forelimb that was removed surgically. Microscopical examination revealed many spindle cells with mild anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and a surrounding collagenous stroma. There were no mitoses. Immunohistochemistry showed that the spindle cells expressed vimentin, but not desmin. A diagnosis of cutaneous fibroma was made. Tumours are reported uncommonly in chelonian species. Cutaneous fibroma has been diagnosed in an alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii), but not previously

[Evolutionary significance of reciprocal connections in the turtle tectofugal visual system].

In two turtle species--Emys orbicularis and Testudo horsfieldi--by the method of anterograde and retrograde traicing method at the light and electron microscopy level, the existence is proven of direct descending projections from the thalamic nucleus of the tectofugal visual system n. rotunds (Rot) to the optic tectum. After injection of tracers into Rot alone and into Rot with involvement of the tectothalamic tract (Trtth), occasional labeled fibers with varicosities and terminals are revealed predominantly in the deep sublayers of SGFS of the rostral optic tectum, while in the lower amount i

Tophaceous pseudogout of the femorotibial joint in a painted turtle (Chrysemys picta).

A 5-year-old painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) presented with a 1cm nodular enlargement of the right femorotibial joint. The right leg was amputated, because the nodule continued to grow and motor problems appeared. The cut surface of the nodule was yellowish white, and had a colloidal to chalky gross appearance. Microscopically, a multinodular foreign-body granuloma was observed around the joint capsule. Morphological and histochemical examination showed that the foreign body consisted of calcium pyrophosphate. Histological findings revealed that the articular cartilage was mainly involved in

Turtle-associated salmonellosis in humans--United States, 2006-2007.

Turtles and other reptiles are reservoirs of Salmonella and have long been a recognized source of Salmonella infection in humans. Small turtles have posed a particular danger to young children because these turtles might not be perceived as health hazards and can be handled like toys. Salmonella infections in children can be severe and can result in hospitalization and occasionally in death. The association between Salmonella infection in children and exposure to turtles led to a 1975 law prohibiting the sale or distribution of small turtles (i.e., those with a carapace of <4 inches in length)

The effects of unilateral eighth nerve block on fictive VOR in the turtle.

Multiunit activity during horizontal sinusoidal motion was recorded from pairs of oculomotor, trochlear, or abducens nerves of an in vitro turtle brainstem preparation that received inputs from intact semicircular canals. Responses of left oculomotor, right trochlear and right abducens nerves were approximately aligned with leftward head velocity, and that of the respective contralateral nerves were in-phase with rightward velocity. We examined the effect of sectioning or injecting lidocaine (1-2 microL of 0.5%) into the right vestibular nerve. Nerve block caused a striking phase shift in the

Multicentric lymphoblastic lymphoma in a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

A juvenile female loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) stranded in Gran Canaria was submitted for necropsy. The turtle had exhibited anorexia and lethargy for 2 weeks prior to its death. At necropsy, the thymus was enlarged by two white and firm nodules. White nodules similar to those in thymus were observed in the plastron, thyroid gland, heart, aorta, left lung, spleen, liver, kidneys, stomach, and small intestine. Histopathology revealed a neoplastic proliferation of round cells identified as lymphoid cells. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells were consistent with lymphoblastic cells

Green turtle fibropapillomatosis: challenges to assessing the role of environmental cofactors.

Green turtle fibropapillomatosis (GTFP) is a growing threat to the survival of green turtle (Chelonia mydas) populations worldwide. Recent transmission studies point to an infectious etiology. Several field studies suggest that high GTFP prevalence is associated with marine habitats that have been impacted by agricultural, industrial, or urban development. Environmental contaminants could be involved in GTFP through several plausible mechanisms including cocarcinogenesis and contaminant-induced immune suppression. However, an association of contaminants with GTFP has not been established. A br
