Changes in fiber tract integrity and visual fields after anterior temporal lobectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate postoperative changes in fiber tract integrity in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) following anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) and to determine whether postoperative changes are 1) stable vs progressive and 2) related to visual field defects. METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was obtained in 7 patients with TLE before, 2 months after, and 1 year after ATL. Changes in fractional anisotropy (FA) were evaluated in a whole-brain voxel-wise analysis, as well within specific fiber tracts. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was performed to examine the t

Investigating microstructure of white matter tracts as candidate endophenotypes of Social Anxiety Disorder - Findings from the Leiden Family Lab study on Social Anxiety Disorder (LFLSAD).

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a mental illness with a complex, partially genetic background. Differences in characteristics of white matter (WM) microstructure have been reported in patients with SAD compared to healthy controls. Also, WM characteristics are moderately to highly heritable. Endophenotypes are measurable characteristics on the road from genotype to phenotype, putatively reflective of genetically based disease mechanisms. In search of candidate endophenotypes of SAD we used a unique sample of SAD patients and their family members of two generations to explore micro

Anterior peri-insular quadrantotomy: a cadaveric white matter dissection study.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior quadrant disconnection represents a safe surgical option in well-selected pediatric patients with a large frontal lobe lesion anterior to the motor cortex. The understanding of the anatomy of the white matter tracts connecting the frontal lobe with the rest of the cerebrum forms the basis of a safe and successful disconnective surgery. The authors explored and illustrated the relevant white matter tracts sectioned during each surgical step using fiber dissection techniques. METHODS: Five human cadaveric hemispheres were dissected to illustrate the frontal connections in th

Variability in white matter structure relates to hallucination proneness.

Hallucinations are a prominent transdiagnostic psychiatric symptom but are also prevalent in individuals who do not require clinical care. Moreover, persistent psychosis-like experience in otherwise healthy individuals may be related to an increased risk to transition to a psychotic disorder. This suggests a common etiology across clinical and non-clinical individuals along a multidimensional psychosis continuum that may be detectable in structural variations of the brain. The current diffusion tensor imaging study assessed 50 healthy individuals (35 females) to identify possible differences i

White matter microstructural deficits in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a neurogenetic condition associated with psychosis, report brain white matter (WM) microstructure aberrations. Several studies report that WM disruptions in 22q11DS are similar to deficits in idiopathic schizophrenia. Yet, DTI results in 22q11DS are inconsistent. We used DTI to compare WM structure in 22q11DS individuals to healthy controls (HC) and explored WM differences in 22q11DS with (+) and without (-) psychosis spectrum symptoms. We examined 39 22q11DS individuals and 39 age, sex and race equivalent HC. DTI w

Diffusion tensor imaging of Aicardi syndrome.

Aicardi syndrome is a congenital neurodevelopmental disorder associated with significant cognitive and motor impairment. Diffusion tensor imaging was performed on two subjects with Aicardi syndrome, as well as on two matched subjects with callosal agenesis and cortical malformations but not a clinical diagnosis of Aicardi syndrome. Whole-brain three-dimensional fiber tractography was performed, and major white matter tracts were isolated using standard tracking protocols. One Aicardi subject demonstrated an almost complete lack of normal corticocortical connectivity, with only the left inferio

White Fiber Correlates of Amygdalohippocampectomy Through the Middle Temporal Gyrus Approach.

OBJECTIVE: The white fiber and gross anatomy relevant for performing amygdalohippocampectomy through the middle temporal gyrus approach for mesial temporal sclerosis has been depicted by white fiber dissection. METHODS: Three previously frozen and formalin fixed cerebral hemispheres were studied. The Klingler method of fiber dissection was used to study the anatomy. The primary tools used were hand-made wooden spatulas, forceps, and microscissors. The anatomy of the amygdala and hippocampus and the landmarks for performing the disconnection during epilepsy surgery are presented. The white fib

White matter integrity in brain structures supporting semantic processing is associated with value-directed remembering in older adults.

White matter microstructure changes substantially in aging. To better understand how the integrity of white matter structures supports the selective learning of rewarding material, 23 healthy older adults were tested on a value-directed remembering task. This task involved successive free recall word lists where items differed in importance, as denoted by value cues preceding each word. White matter structure was measured using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). We found that greater structural integrity (as measured by lower mean diffusivity) in left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus was asso

Non-alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome in psychiatric patients with a history of undiagnosed Wernicke's encephalopathy.

Wernicke's encephalopathy is often undiagnosed, particularly in non-alcoholics. There are very few reports of non-alcoholic patients diagnosed with Korsakoff syndrome in the absence of a prior diagnosis of Wernicke's encephalopathy and no studies of diffusion tensor imaging in non-alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome. We report on three non-alcoholic psychiatric patients (all women) with long-term non-progressive memory impairment that developed after malnutrition accompanied by at least one of the three Wernicke's encephalopathy manifestations: ocular abnormalities, ataxia or unsteadiness, and an alt

White matter integrity in major depressive disorder: Implications of childhood trauma, 5-HTTLPR and BDNF polymorphisms.

This study examined the impact of childhood neglect, serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) polymorphisms on white matter (WM) integrity in major depressive disorder (MDD) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Fifty-five medication-free MDD patients and 18 controls underwent diffusion tensor imaging scanning, genotyping and completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Tract based spatial statistics (TBSS) findings revealed reduced fractional anisotropy (FA) in the MDD group in the anterior internal capsule. 5-HTTLPR-S'L' heterozygotes in the MDD group ex

An Observational Study: Investigating White Matter Tract Alterations in Females Across Age Groups Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging.

Introduction White matter tracts in the brain are essential for neurocognitive processes. Understanding their integrity is crucial for assessing both healthy and pathological brain states. Tractography based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides a non-invasive method to map and measure these pathways. The purpose of this study is to examine the 10 main white matter tracts in females aged 18 to 50, focusing on mean diffusivity (MD), volume, and fractional anisotropy (FA). Materials and methods Fifty-one healthy females aged 18-50 years participated in the study, divided into three age grou

Exploring Tractography: An Analysis of Brain Connectivity Patterns in Men.

INTRODUCTION: White matter tracts that connect different parts of the brain comprise the structural connectome, which is essential to its operation. Assessing behavioral changes and brain health requires an understanding of these tracts. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), in particular, allows for the thorough viewing and characterization of these routes in tractography. In order to assess the impact of aging on white matter integrity, this study examines the 10 main white matter tracts in men, paying particular attention to volume, fractional anisotropy (FA), and mean diffusivity (MD). Parental mental illness and child brain structure: A diffusion MRI study of emotion regulation related pathways.

BACKGROUND: Children of parents with mental illness (at-risk) face an increased risk for developing mental health issues themselves than children of healthy parents (controls), yet the neurobiological underpinnings remain unclear. This study explored differences in white matter (WM) between at-risk children and controls, focusing on brain pathways related to emotion regulation and the associations between parenting behaviours, stress, and WM microstructural properties. METHODS: WM properties were assessed via diffusion-weighted imaging in 64 children (28 at-risk, 36 control) across five emoti

Two reading routes, two white matter tracts: Evidence from dyslexia following brain tumors.

Cognitive models propose that reading aloud relies on two routes, a lexical route for familiar word recognition and a sublexical route for graphene-to-phoneme conversion. Selective disruption of these routes results in surface or phonological dyslexia, respectively. Although the dual route model is well supported behaviorally, its white matter substrates remain incompletely characterized. This study examined the anatomical correlates of acquired lexical and sublexical reading impairments in patients with high-grade glioma in the dominant hemisphere. Thirty-seven patients underwent diffusion te

Fixel-Based Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging Reveals Novel Associations Between White Matter Microstructure and Childhood Aggressive Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Childhood aggression has been linked to white matter abnormalities, but research has been inconsistent with regard to both regions of alterations and directionality of the associations. We examined white matter microstructure correlates of aggression using a novel diffusion imaging analysis technique, fixel-based analysis, which leverages connectivity and crossing-fiber information to assess fiber bundle density. METHODS: The sample included 70 children with aggressive behavior and 25 healthy control children without aggressive behavior. Aggression was measured by the parent-rated
