Utilization of CMS pre-ESRD Kidney Disease Education services and its associations with the home dialysis therapies.

BACKGROUND: Kidney Disease Education (KDE) has been shown to improve informed dialysis selection and home dialysis use, two long-held but underachieved goals of US nephrology community. In 2010, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services launched a policy of KDE reimbursements for all Medicare beneficiaries with advanced chronic kidney disease. However, the incorporation of KDE service in real-world practice and its association with the home dialysis utilization has not been examined. METHODS: Using the 2016 US Renal Data System linked to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and pre-ESRD Medicar

Circumstances of child deaths in Mali and Uganda: a community-based confidential enquiry.

BACKGROUND: Interventions to reduce child deaths in Africa have often underachieved, causing the Millennium Development Goal targets to be missed. We assessed whether a community enquiry into the circumstances of death could improve intervention effectiveness by identifying local avoidable factors and explaining implementation failures. METHODS: Deaths of children younger than 5 years were ascertained by community informants in two districts in Mali (762 deaths) and three districts in Uganda (442 deaths) in 2011-15. Deaths were investigated by interviewing parents and health workers. Investig

Educational Outcomes in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes and Psychiatric Disorders.

IMPORTANCE: Research shows that children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D), compared with their peers without diabetes, have a greater risk of psychiatric disorders. However, no study has comprehensively examined whether having psychiatric disorders is associated with educational outcomes in children and adolescents with T1D. OBJECTIVE: To investigate educational outcomes in children and adolescents with T1D with and without psychiatric disorders. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from multiple Swedish registers. The main study cohort included individual

Assessment of Receptive and Expressive Language Skills Among Young Children With Prelingual Single-Sided Deafness Managed With Early Cochlear Implantation.

IMPORTANCE: Pediatric single-sided deafness (SSD) can seriously affect development, causing impaired spatial hearing skills, speech-language delays, and academic underachievement. Early cochlear implantation likely improves hearing-related outcomes, but its association with language development remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether early cochlear implantation is associated with language outcomes for children with prelingual SSD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Cochlear Implant for Children and One Deaf Ear study was initiated in 2015 and recruited participants at 4 academ

A model-based cluster analysis approach to adolescent problem behaviors and young adult outcomes.

Data from a community-based sample of 1,126 10th- and 11th-grade adolescents were analyzed using a model-based cluster analysis approach to empirically identify heterogeneous adolescent subpopulations from the person-oriented and pattern-oriented perspectives. The model-based cluster analysis is a new clustering procedure to investigate population heterogeneity utilizing finite mixture multivariate normal densities and accordingly to classify subpopulations using more rigorous statistical procedures for the comparison of alternative models. Four cluster groups were identified and labeled multi

Meta-analysis of neurobehavioral outcomes in very preterm and/or very low birth weight children.

OBJECTIVE: Sequelae of academic underachievement, behavioral problems, and poor executive function (EF) have been extensively reported for very preterm (<or=33 weeks' gestation) and/or very low birth weight (VLBW) (<or=1500 g) children. Great variability in the published results, however, hinders the field in studying underlying dysfunctions and developing intervention strategies. We conducted a quantitative meta-analysis of studies published between 1998 and 2008 on academic achievement, behavioral functioning, and EF with the aim of providing aggregated measures of effect size for these outc

Substance use and related behaviors among suburban late adolescents: the importance of perceived parent containment.

This study builds upon prior findings of elevated substance use among suburban high school students, examining the ramifications of different parenting dimensions on substance use and related behaviors. The sample consisted of 258 11th graders in an affluent suburban community. Parenting predictors considered included those well-studied previously such as monitoring and closeness, as well as two newer dimensions: perceived containment (stringency of anticipated reactions in reaction to negative behaviors) and perceived commitment (e.g., helping the child despite other commitments). Outcomes in

Road work on memory lane--functional and structural alterations to the learning and memory circuit in adults born very preterm.

Very preterm (VPT) birth is considered a risk factor not only for neurological impairment, but also for reduced function in several cognitive domains in childhood and later in life. Individuals who were born VPT are more likely to demonstrate learning and memory difficulties compared to term-born controls. These problems contribute to more VPT-born children repeating grades and underachieving in school. This, in turn, affects their prospects in adult life. Here we aimed to 1) study how the VPT-born adult brain functionally recruited specific areas during learning, i.e. encoding and recall acro
