Unsupervised identification of sepsis subpopulations in the eICU database: A multi-method clustering approach with validation.

Sepsis remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and despite extensive research, uncertainties persist regarding its treatment outcomes due to the diversity of the condition and characteristics across patients. Identifying subpopulations of sepsis patients with distinct clinical behaviors can be instrumental in developing more targeted and effective interventions. In this study, we build on previous work that applied clustering techniques to the large cohort single-hospital MIMIC-III intensive care unit (ICU) database by extending the analysis to the larger cohort multi-hospital eI

Generating variability from motor primitives during infant locomotor development.

Motor variability is a fundamental feature of developing systems allowing motor exploration and learning. In human infants, leg movements involve a small number of basic coordination patterns called locomotor primitives, but whether and when motor variability could emerge from these primitives remains unknown. Here we longitudinally followed 18 infants on 2-3 time points between birth (~4 days old) and walking onset (~14 months old) and recorded the activity of their leg muscles during locomotor or rhythmic movements. Using unsupervised machine learning, we show that the structure of trial-to-

Unsupervised boundary delineation of spinal neural foramina using a multi-feature and adaptive spectral segmentation.

As a common disease in the elderly, neural foramina stenosis (NFS) brings a significantly negative impact on the quality of life due to its symptoms including pain, disability, fall risk and depression. Accurate boundary delineation is essential to the clinical diagnosis and treatment of NFS. However, existing clinical routine is extremely tedious and inefficient due to the requirement of physicians' intensively manual delineation. Automated delineation is highly needed but faces big challenges from the complexity and variability in neural foramina images. In this paper, we propose a pure imag

The machine learning methods to analyze the using strategy of antiplatelet drugs in ischaemic stroke patients with gastrointestinal haemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: For ischaemic stroke patients with gastrointestinal haemorrhage, stopping antiplatelet drugs or reducing the dose of antiplatelet drugs was a conventional clinical therapy method. But not a study to prove which way was better. And the machinery learning methods could help to obtain which way more suit for some patients. METHODS: Data from consecutive ischaemic stroke patients with gastrointestinal haemorrhage were prospectively collected. The outcome was a recurrent stroke rate, haemorrhage events, mortality and favourable functional outcome (FFO). We analysed the data using conve

Radiomics: a new tool to differentiate adrenocortical adenoma from carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The main challenge in the management of indeterminate incidentally discovered adrenal tumours is to differentiate benign from malignant lesions. In the absence of clear signs of invasion or metastases, imaging techniques do not always precisely define the nature of the mass. The present pilot study aimed to determine whether radiomics may predict malignancy in adrenocortical tumours. METHODS: CT images in unenhanced, arterial, and venous phases from 19 patients who had undergone resection of adrenocortical tumours and a cohort who had undergone surveillance for at least 5 years fo

CDAFormer: Hybrid Transformer-based contrastive domain adaptation framework for unsupervised hyperspectral change detection.

Hyperspectral image (HSI) change detection is a technique used to identify changes between HSIs captured in the same scene at different times. Most of the existing deep learning-based methods can achieve wonderful results, but it is difficult to generalize well to other HSIs with different data distributions. Moreover, it is expensive and laborious to obtain the annotated dataset for model training. To address above issues, we propose a hybrid Transformer-based contrastive domain adaptation (CDAFormer) framework for unsupervised hyperspectral change detection, which can effectively use prior i

Unsupervised Dimensionality Reduction Techniques for the Assessment of ASD Biomarkers.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) encompasses a range of developmental disabilities marked by differences in social functioning, cognition, and behavior. Both genetic and environmental factors are known to contribute to ASD, yet the exact etiological factors remain unclear. Developing integrative models to explore the effects of gene expression on behavioral and cognitive traits attributed to ASD can uncover environmental and genetic interactions. A notable aspect of ASD research is the sex-wise diagnostic disparity: males are diagnosed more frequently than females, which suggests potential sex-s

Comparative analysis of supervised and ensemble models with unsupervised exploration for alzheimer's disease prediction.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory loss and cognitive decline, with no known cure. Early detection of dementia, a primary manifestation of Alzheimer's disease, is critical to enable timely intervention and treatment planning. This study introduces ensemble learning models for predicting Alzheimer's disease and presents a comparative analysis between traditional machine learning and advanced ensemble models. The evaluation is conducted using the "Open Access Series of Imaging Studies" 2 (OASIS-2) dataset. Traditional models, including logisti

Unveiling the role of harmonization on clinically significant prostate cancer detection using MRI.

Accurate detection and classification of clinically significant prostate cancer remain critical challenges in medical imaging. Despite numerous studies focusing on feature extraction and classification, none have systematically assessed the impact of harmonization techniques on multicenter imaging data. This study aimed to improve diagnostic performance by integrating harmonization via unsupervised clustering with clinical variables into machine learning models, even when the source center is unknown. We extracted features from T2-weighted magnetic resonance images using two approaches: handcr

Deconvolution of cell types and states in spatial multiomics utilizing TACIT.

Identifying cell types and states remains a time-consuming, error-prone challenge for spatial biology. While deep learning increasingly plays a role, it is difficult to generalize due to variability at the level of cells, neighborhoods, and niches in health and disease. To address this, we develop TACIT, an unsupervised algorithm for cell annotation using predefined signatures that operates without training data. TACIT uses unbiased thresholding to distinguish positive cells from background, focusing on relevant markers to identify ambiguous cells in multiomic assays. Using five datasets (5,00

BRAINHash: Brain-Inspired Region-Aligned Interaction Network for Unsupervised Cross-Modal Hashing.

Unsupervised cross-modal hashing (UCMH) has attracted considerable attention owing to its minimal reliance on manual annotations and low retrieval latency. However, existing UCMH methods based on contrastive learning frameworks combined with multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) often suffer from two key limitations: the inherent challenge in constructing reliable positive-negative sample pairs under unsupervised settings, and the restricted representational capacity of static network architectures. Inspired by cognitive mechanisms observed in the human brain, where specialized regions support distinc

Cycle contrastive adversarial learning with structural consistency for unsupervised high-quality image deraining transformer.

In overcoming the challenges faced in adapting to paired real-world data, recent unsupervised single image deraining (SID) methods have proven capable of accomplishing notably acceptable deraining performance. However, the previous methods usually fail to produce a high quality rain-free image due to neglecting sufficient attention to semantic representation and the image content, which results in the inability to completely separate the content from the rain layer. In this paper, we develop a novel cycle contrastive adversarial framework for unsupervised SID, which mainly consists of cycle co

From 3 to 8 clusters: a machine learning-based classification of operated adult spinal deformity patients.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) is a heterogeneous condition encompassing diverse etiologies, clinical presentations, and surgical challenges. While previous unsupervised learning models have stratified ASD patients into 3 broad phenotypes, these often lack clinical granularity for surgical decision-making. PURPOSE: To refine the classification of operated ASD patients using unsupervised machine learning and assess whether expanding from 3 to 8 clusters improves clinical discrimination and predictive robustness. A dual autoencoder and singular value decomposition based feature optimization for the segmentation of brain tumor from MRI images.

BACKGROUND: The brain tumor is the growth of abnormal cells inside the brain. These cells can be grown into malignant or benign tumors. Segmentation of tumor from MRI images using image processing techniques started decades back. Image processing based brain tumor segmentation can be divided in to three categories conventional image processing methods, Machine Learning methods and Deep Learning methods. Conventional methods lacks the accuracy in segmentation due to complex spatial variation of tumor. Machine Learning methods stand as a good alternative to conventional methods. Methods like SVM

Leveraging machine learning in the global fight against money laundering and terrorism financing: An affordances perspective.

Financial services organisations facilitate the movement of money worldwide, and keep records of their clients' identity and financial behaviour. As such, they have been enlisted by governments worldwide to assist with the detection and prevention of money laundering, which is a key tool in the fight to reduce crime and create sustainable economic development, corresponding to Goal 16 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In this paper, we investigate how the technical and contextual affordances of machine learning algorithms may enable these organisations to accomplish that tas
