The electrocatalytic C─N coupling of carbon dioxide and nitrate presents a promising approach for environmentally friendly urea synthesis. In this work, we propose a strategy to boost efficient and durable urea synthesis by coupling the electrochemical and chemical steps. Utilizing fullerene (C60) as a redox-active electron mediator during the electrochemical reduction process, we effectively inhibit the irreversible reduction deactivation of positively charged copper (Cuδ+) active sites. The electron-accepting fullerene form ions (C60 n-) that engage in a spontaneous chemical redox reaction w

In this study, kaolinite-poly(urea-formaldehyde) was successfully prepared through the polymerization of urea intercalated within the kaolinite structure. Polymerization was carried out under ambient conditions by immersing kaolinite-urea in formaldehyde. Evidence of urea intercalation and polymerization was obtained from FTIR, XRD, and thermal analysis (TG-DSC). The XRD pattern of the kaolinite-poly(urea-formaldehyde) composite shows that polymerization induces exfoliation of the kaolinite layers, leading to the formation of a nanocomposite. Textural analysis through nitrogen adsorption on ra

Smart coatings and smart polymers have been garnering great interest in recent times due to their novel characteristics, such as being self-restoring, self-cleaning, and self-healing. However, most self-healing materials have a low glass transition temperature (Tg) and are inadequate for the repair of advanced composites. Because of their low Tg, the conventional self-healing materials plasticize and weaken the composites. In this study, moderate to high temperature self-healing microcapsules, capable of healing and thus stopping crack propagation, are prepared. The microcapsules were prepared

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the function of urea cycle enzymes (UCEs) may be affected, resulting in hyperammonemia and the risk of disease progression. We aimed to determine whether the expression and function of UCEs are altered in an animal model of NASH and in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and whether this process is reversible.
METHODS: Rats were first fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet for 10 months to induce NASH, before being switched onto a normal chow diet to recover. In humans, we obtained liver biopsies from 20 patients

Urea is an important hygroscopic component of the epidermis, where it participates in the maintenance of skin hydration as part of the skin's source of natural moisturizing factor (NMF) in the outer most layers. Xerotic skin, which is frequently characterized as NMF-deficient, is a unifying trait of dermatoses such as atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, and ichthyosis vulgaris. The reduced hygroscopic potential of pathologically dry skin leads to unregulated transepidermal water loss (TEWL), epidermal hyperproliferation, and inhibited desquamation; all which clinically translate to hyperkeratot

The title compound, [Sn(C6H5)2Cl2(CH4N2S)2], has been obtained from the reaction between Sn(C6H5)2Cl2 and SC(NH2)2. The asymmetric unit consists of one half of the mol-ecular unit, the remainder generated by a twofold rotation axis located along the Cl-Sn-Cl bonds. The Sn(IV) atom is coordinated by two phenyl groups, two Cl atoms and two thio-urea ligands in an all trans octa-hedral C2Cl2S2 environment. Individual mol-ecules are connected through N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, leading to a three-dimensional network structure. Intra-molecular N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds are also present.

The urea-cycle disorders (UCDs) are a group of congenital enzyme and carrier deficiencies predisposing to hyperammonemia (HA). HA causes changes in the central nervous system (CNS) including alterations of neurotransmitter function, cell volume, and energy deprivation ultimately leading to cerebral edema. Neuropathological findings of UCDs primarily reflect changes in astrocyte morphology. Neurological features accompanying acute HA include changes in behavior and consciousness in the short term, and potential for impairments in memory and executive function as long-term effects. Hemodialysis improves survival for animals with acute kidney injury beyond what would be expected with conventional management of the same animals. Clinical evidence and experience in human patients suggest a role for earlier intervention with renal replacement to avoid the morbidity of uremia and to promote better metabolic stability and recovery. For a large population of animal patients, it is the advanced standard for the management of acute and chronic uremia, life-threatening poisoning, and fluid overload for which there is no alternative therapy.

There are two mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, [HgCl(2)(C(5)H(12)N(2)S)(2)]. In both mol-ecules, the N,N'-diethyl-thio-urea ligands exhibit a cis, trans geometry around their C-N amide bonds. The shapes of the mol-ecules are, to a large extent, determined by intra-molecular N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds formed by the N-H groups from the cis amide groups. In one mol-ecule, these groups are involved in three-center hydrogen bonds involving both chloride ligands, whereas in the other mol-ecule only one Cl ligand takes part in intra-molecular hydrogen bonding. The coordination aroun

Inherited urea cycle disorders represent one of the most common groups of inborn errors of metabolism. Late-onset urea cycle disorders caused by partial enzyme deficiencies may present with unexpected clinical phenotypes. We report 9 patients followed up in our hospital presenting late-onset urea cycle disorders who initially manifested neuropsychiatric/neurodevelopmental symptoms (the most prevalent neuropsychiatric/neurodevelopmental diagnoses were mental retardation, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], language disorder, and delirium). Generally, these clinical pictures did not

BACKGROUND: Ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency presents most commonly with neonatal hyperammonemic coma. The gene is on the X chromosome, but the disease may manifest as a dominant trait. Mutations that lead to later-onset presentations may lead to life-threatening disease and may be unrecognized, particularly when the first clinical disease occurs in adulthood.
OBJECTIVE: To document the clinical and metabolic consequences of a mutation in the OTC gene.
DESIGN: Case reports.
SETTING: A metabolic/biochemical genetic referral service.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical and biochemical

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the commonest bacterial pathogen found worldwide and more than half the world population aged 40 years and above is colonized with it. The infection rate is >95 % in some African countries. In 1994, the International Agency for Research on cancer classified H. pylori as a class I carcinogen in humans. It causes chronic active gastritis, duodenal and gastric ulcer and gastric malignancy, and is thought to be associated with coronary artery disease, cerebral stroke, vitamin B12 and iron-deficiency anaemia, etc. Therefore, non-invasive test-and-treatment strateg

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the feasibility of prenatal diagnosis by molecular genetics in all urea cycle defects in order to improve and standardize the current approaches.
METHODS: Deceased index patients who had suffered from a urea cycle disorder were investigated for mutations of the biochemically most likely affected gene. If no material of index patients was available, parental DNA was studied for obligate carrier status. Fetal cells of 15 pregnancies, either chorionic villi or amniotic fluid cells, were used for direct sequence analysis of the respective mutations. Thirteen families wer

This report prompted us to examine the effect of urea on K-Cl cotransport in human erythrocytes. In human erythrocytes, urea activated K-Cl cotransport reversibly and in a concentration-dependent manner. Pretreatment with okadaic acid abolished the urea activation of transport, suggesting that exposure to urea resulted in net dephosphorylation of the transporter or a key regulator and that the action of urea was exerted proximal to the phosphorylation-dephosphorylation step. At a concentration of 200 mM, urea activated K-Cl cotransport without any delay, even in the absence of cell swelling. H

In 6 pre-menopausal and 6 post-menopausal women we compared urine volume and excretion of creatinine and urea daily from day 2 of the 1st period of menstruation to day 1 of the 2nd, along with clearances of creatinine (CCr) and urea (C-urea). Clearances were based on 7 serum samples which were taken on day 2 of the 1st menstruation and on days 8, 14, 15, 16, 21, and day 1 of the next menstruation, when 4 cycling hormones were also assayed. Mean group ages were 35 and 59 years for pre- and post-menopausal women. CCr cycled only in the pre-menopausal group, with a nadir around the time of ovulat

Plasma urea concentrations were determined for 109 pregnant Caucasian women and 117 pregnant urban African women covering the last two trimesters of pregnancy. Elevation of the urea level was observed in both populations. The elevation was progressive in both cases. The urea levels for Caucasians were apparently normal until about the thirteenth week of gestation when it rose to above normal level and increased progressively in the third trimester. For the Africans, the progressive rise was similar but the values did not exceed the normal range until after the thirty-second week of gestation.
