INTRODUCTION: Calculi encountered in the lower urinary tract typically reside within the bladder, less often in the urethra. In this video, we present a minimally invasive endoscopic approach for removal of the largest total stone volume in the lower urinary tract reported in the literature to date.
METHODS: A 25-year-old male (body mass index 61 kg/m2) with neurogenic bladder presented with urosepsis and acute kidney injury secondary to obstructive uropathy. Computerized tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis demonstrated bilateral severe hydroureteronephrosis, a 4.2-cm bladder stone, and

Radiographs can be used to easily visualize common types of urinary calculi in all parts of the urinary tract. Positive-contrast excretory urography and cystourethrography are sensitive to diseases within the ureters and urethra, most commonly obstruction. Ultrasound is widely available and noninvasive and can be used to evaluate renal architecture, ureteral dilation, urinary bladder wall disease, and urolithiasis. Computed tomography is increasing in availability and provides a large amount of cross-sectional information quickly and noninvasively. Multiple imaging modalities can be used to es

UNLABELLED: INTRODUCTION Bladder stones have historically been associated with urinary stasis secondary to bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). Recent studies indicate that the role of BOO in bladder stone formation is minor. We evaluate the role of urinary lithogenic factors in bladder stone formation by comparing the compositions of bladder stones and kidney stones in patients with multi-site urinary calculi.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified patients who were treated for concomitant bladder stones and kidney stones between 2008-2019, and had both stone compositions available. Patients with

Urinary catheterisation is a common nursing procedure in hospital and in the community, yet there are risks associated with it. Complications include urethral trauma, urinary tract infection, strictures, urethral perforation, encrustation, bladder calculi and neoplastic changes (Lowthian, 1998). The procedure is also linked to nosocomial infection and, in some cases, these catheter-related infections can prove fatal (Pratt et al, 2001). Due to the risks, catheterisation is indicated as a last resort after all other interventions have failed.

Differences in calcium oxalate crystal growth inhibition were studied in normally voided urine (bladder urine) and in urine collected directly from the kidney (kidney urine) in nine dogs. Urine samples were collected before and 10 days after bilateral ureterostomies. Calcium oxalate crystal growth inhibition was measured in a standard seeded crystal growth system. The alcian blue-precipitable material of the urine samples was determined. Significantly lower values were observed in kidney urine than in bladder urine for calcium oxalate crystal inhibition (mean difference, 0.07 +/- 0.02 inhibito

INTRODUCTION: Although uterine perforation is a rare but serious complication, intrauterine devices are globally popular and effective contraceptive methods.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old female patient manifesting symptoms of vaginal leakage and lower abdominal discomfort was admitted to our hospital. Diagnostic imaging identified a vesicovaginal fistula and bladder calculi attributable to perforation of the bladder by an intrauterine device that had been inserted over four decades ago. The patient underwent open surgery for cystolith removal and vesicovaginal fistula repair.

We treated 14 male patients for urethral stones during a 17-year interval. The calculi were located in the posterior urethra in 7 patients and in the anterior urethra in 7. Anatomical alteration of the lower urinary tract was an important predisposing factor, since 11 patients had history of bladder and urethral surgery or disease, 2 had an associated neurogenic bladder, 6 had urethral strictures or diverticula and 3 had concomitant bladder stones. Urethroplasty was performed in 5 cases, surgical removal of the stone in 3, retrograde manipulation inside the bladder in 4 and electrohydraulic en

In situ Holmium laser lithotripsy is a safe, effective procedure for the treatment of impacted urethral stones. This procedure can be performed transurethrally as an outpatient with minimal tissue trauma and render patients stone free. The authors utilized this procedure in 2 patients whose anatomy did not allow the calculi to be manipulated into the urinary bladder in a retrograde manner. Because of its successful use elsewhere in the urinary tract, we believe that Holmium laser lithotripsy may be the treatment of choice for impacted urethral stones.

PURPOSE: We describe a new combined horizontal and vertical pelvic osteotomy procedure for bladder exstrophy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 36 patients with the bladder exstrophy complex underwent this procedure during a 3-year period (8 primary and 18 secondary bladder closures, and 6 at bladder neck reconstruction).
RESULTS: There were no instances of dehiscence and only a minor bladder prolapse in 1 patient with cloacal exstrophy. Two patients had a transient femoral nerve palsy and there was 1 superficial pin infection. Urological complications included symptomatic urinary tract infe

BACKGROUND: Bloody urine is classified in farm animals as hematuria, hemoglobinuria, and myoglobinuria. In small ruminants, discolored urine is reported due to several etiologies which is sometimes fatal. Of these causes are babesiosis, bacillary hemoglobinuria, copper toxicity, and hypophosphatemia.
AIM: This study was designed to investigate the clinical, etiological, hematobiochemical, ultrasonographic, and pathological findings in rams and bucks with red urine syndrome.
METHODS: Eighteen male animals (nine rams and nine bucks) of 6 months to 3 years were examined. Parallel, 10 healthy co

Ureteral stents are widely used to ensure good urinary drainage and to relieve obstruction, pain and infection during urologic procedures. However, long-term indwelling ureteral stents can cause various complications, such as encrustation, hematuria and infection. Here, the case of an 88-year-old man who had undergone simultaneous radical resection of sigmoid colon cancer and partial resection of the bladder 6 years prior is presented. The patient complained of urinary frequency and urgency, dysuria and intermittent fever. A kidney ureter bladder X-ray examination revealed the presence of an e

PURPOSE: It gives important information in selecting the appropriate treatment for urolithiasis to confirm the component of urinary calculus. Presently component analysis of the urinary calculus is generally performed by infrared spectroscopy which is employed by companies providing laboratory testing services in Japan. The infrared spectroscopy determines the molecular components from the absorption spectra in consequence of atomic vibrations. It has the drawback that an accurate crystal structure cannot be analyzed compared with the X-ray diffraction method which analyzes the crystal constit

Background: Cutaneous vesicostomy is a urinary diversion for chronic urinary retention caused by neurogenic bladder. In this procedure, urine is drained directly from the bladder into a pouch attached to the lower abdomen, where the use of a catheter is unnecessary. Although complications of this procedure have been described, such as stoma stenosis, bladder prolapse, bladder calculi, and peristomal dermatitis, it is useful for patients who have difficulty with permanent bladder catheterization. The laparoscopy-assisted technique for cutaneous vesicostomy has not been described in the existing

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) is one of the most common ailments affecting aging men. Symptoms typically associated with BPH include weak stream, hesitancy, urgency, frequency, and nocturia. More serious complications of BPH include urinary retention, gross hematuria, bladder calculi, recurrent urinary tract infection, obstructive uropathy, and renal failure. Evaluation of BPH includes a detailed history, objective assessment of urinary symptoms with validated questionnaires, and measurement of bladder function parameters, including uroflowmetry an

Bladder stones are common in neurological patients. As in other patients, bladder stones may reflect a voiding mode that fails to ensure complete bladder emptying, but they can also be due to more specific accidents, such as a foreign body introduced into the bladder during intermittent catheterization. Due to the frequency of this disease in neurological patients, the first step of treatment consists of correcting any vesico-sphincteric dyssynergia. Bladder stones can usually be easily removed based on a good knowledge of the management of this disease, which has become rare in the general po
