Urinary catheterization prior to PCI worsens clinical outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Indwelling urethral catheters (IUCs) are used to measure urine volume, keep patients on bed rest, or keep the groin area clean in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, the association between IUC use and in-hospital urinary-related complications is unknown. METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective analysis of 303 patients admitted to our hospital in 2018-2020 who had AMI without cardiogenic shock. An IUC was inserted in the emergency room upon initiation of invasive catheter treatment and removed as soon as possible. The primary outcome was in-hospital a

The Effect of Symptomatic Stress Urinary Incontinence on Catheterization Rates After Intradetrusor OnabotulinumtoxinA Injections.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether catheterization rates after intradetrusor onabotulinumtoxinA injection for nonneurogenic overactive bladder and urgency incontinence differ between women with urgency urinary incontinence only and women with urgency-predominant mixed urinary incontinence. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients that underwent intradetrusor onabotulinumtoxinA injection of 100 U for nonneurogenic urgency urinary incontinence. The primary outcome was the difference in catheterization rates between women with urgency urinary incontinence alone compared with wome

Evaluation of a Novel 3D-Printed Urinary Catheterization Simulation Model in Undergraduate Medical Teaching.

Introduction Urinary catheter insertion is a mandatory procedure taught during medical school. It is imperative that learners are provided the opportunity to practice the procedure, as an improper catheterization technique can result in urethral trauma and contribute to urinary tract infections. Simulation training offers the advantage of avoiding patient harm while allowing learners to feel comfortable to learn from their mistakes, resulting in increased user confidenceand shortening the learning curve for basic procedures. 3D-printed simulation models are anatomically accurate, low-cost, reu

A Simulation-based, cognitive assessment of resident decision making during complex urinary catheterization scenarios.

BACKGROUND: This study explores general surgery residents' decision making skills in uncommon, complex urinary catheter scenarios. METHODS: 40 residents were presented with two scenarios. Scenario A was a male with traumatic urethral injury and scenario B was a male with complete urinary blockage. Residents verbalized whether they would catheterize the patient and described the workup and management of suspected pathologies. Residents' decision paths were documented and analyzed. RESULTS: In scenario A, 45% of participants chose to immediately consult Urology. 47.5% named five diagnostic tes

[Efficacy of instillagel against methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus in urinary bladder catheterization].

Infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) present a global problem. Catheterization of the bladder is a risk factor of MRSA infection. Bacteriological tests showed that a lubricating agent for catheterization installagel has a special formulation killing MRSA for 5 minutes. Thereby, instillagel is recommended for catheterization in risk groups attending clinics and old people's homes.

Increased blood flow after catheterization and drainage in the chronically obstructed rabbit urinary bladder.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of drainage on rabbit bladder blood flow after 4 weeks of partial outlet obstruction. Previous studies have shown that catheterization and drainage of the urinary bladder in control rabbits resulted in a significant nitric oxide-induced increase of blood flow to the bladder. It was also shown that 4 weeks' partial outlet obstruction caused a significant decrease in blood flow to the bladder. METHODS: Male New Zealand White rabbits underwent partial outlet obstruction by standard methods. After 4 weeks, the blood flow to the bladder muscle and mucosa was det

Antiseptic catheter gel and urinary tract infection after short-term postoperative catheterization in women.

This paper compares the rates of postoperative urinary tract infection (UTI) when an antiseptic lubricating gel was used at catheter insertion in 132 women and not used in 387 women. 519 consecutive patients admitted for elective gynaecological surgery were studied prospectively. Antibiotics were not used. Mean catheterization time was 1.4 days (range 1-3). Postoperative UTI occurred in 17.4% and 18.3% of the patients, respectively (p = 0.95). Therefore, using antiseptic anaesthetic gel at catheter insertion does not appear to reduce the risk of UTI associated with short-term transurethral cat

Chondroitin sulfate degradation bolsters Proteus mirabilis growth and colonization of the catheterized urinary tract.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are negatively charged polysaccharides composed of repeating disaccharide units and are essential components of the extracellular matrix throughout numerous tissues. The bladder urothelium has a thick protective GAG layer that primarily consists of chondroitin sulfate (CS), heparan sulfate (HS), and hyaluronic acid (HA), and urinary tract pathogens must either degrade or otherwise circumvent this layer to infect the urothelium. In this study, we investigated GAG degradation by Proteus mirabilis, a common and persistent colonizer of the catheterized urinary tract. Almo

Lethal septic pulmonary thromboembolism in a repatriated body - a rare complication of prolonged urinary catheterization.

A case of septic pulmonary thromboembolism arising from thrombophlebitis of the prostatic venous plexus associated with long-term urinary catheterisation in a 51-year-old man is reported. Despite a previous autopsy having been conducted in the country where he had been resident overseas, a re-examination showed histological evidence of mild patchy chronic prostatitis with a florid, focally purulent, thrombophlebitis of the periprostatic venous plexus with abscess formation and evidence of bacterial overgrowth. Corresponding microscopy of the lungs showed septic microthromboemboli within small

A feasibility study using cadaver: Efficacy and safety of the novel automatic urinary catheterization device.

Intermittent catheterization is an effective bladder management strategy for patients with incomplete bladder emptying. For self-catheterization, sufficient hand function in both hands is necessary. We have developed a novel automatic urinary catheterization device to induce self-IC for patients with bladder dysfunction and upper extremity disability. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of this novel automatic catheterization device. This study was performed using 4 fresh cadavers. First, 400 mL of normal saline was filled into the cadaver bladder. Then, the catheter was in

Inaccuracy of Urine Output Measurements due to Urinary Retention in Catheterized Patients in the Burn ICU.

Electronic urinary output monitors, intended to provide urine output information to guide fluid therapy during burn resuscitation, can be inaccurate because of airlocks causing urine retention in the drainage tube and bladder. In this study, the authors explore the effects of airlock formation on urine output measured using an electronic urinary output monitor connected to either a standard commercial drainage tubing system or a drainage tubing system with an automated airlock clearing mechanism. In a multicenter study in the burn intensive care unit, urine output was compared between 10 contr

Short term urinary catheterized patients in intensive care unit (ICU)--a need to screen.

Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) is the second most commonly reported healthcare associated infection, accounting for upto 40% of all nosocomial infections. Silent catheter associated bacteriuria comprises a huge reservoir of resistant organism in hospitals particularly in critical care units. We prospectively studied 100 newly short-term catheterized patients in a tertiary care hospital. Samples collected on day three and daily thereafter for semi quantitative urine culture and pus cell count. Antibiotic sensitivity was tested using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Out of
