Assistive technology and learning disabilities: today's realities and tomorrow's promises.

Many forms of technology, both "high" and "low," can help individuals with learning disabilities capitalize on their strengths and bypass, or compensate for, their disabilities. This article surveys the current status of assistive technology for this population and reflects on future promises and potential problems. In addition, a model is presented for conceptualizing assistive technology in terms of the types of barriers it helps persons with disabilities to surmount. Several current technologies are described and the research supporting their effectiveness reviewed: word processing, compute

Gait-Synced Translation Gain for Naturalistic VR Motion.

Translation gain is a key Redirected Walking (RDW) technique in Virtual Reality (VR) that enables users to navigate virtual environments (VEs) larger than the available physical space. The technique was originally developed to scale users' walking distance in the VE and is typically applied continuously, regardless of the user's motion state. We introduce Gait-Synced Translation Gain (GSTG), a novel approach that adapts translation gain by synchronizing it with the user's gait cycle. GSTG leverages the single-limb support phase of walking-when users are less stable and thus less sensitive to e

PhenoLearn: a user-friendly toolkit for image annotation and deep learning-based phenotyping for biological datasets.

The digitization of natural history specimens has unlocked opportunities for large-scale phenotypic trait analysis. In recent years, deep learning has shown significant results in accurately predicting annotations on 2D specimen photographs. However, it can be challenging for biologists without extensive related expertise to easily use deep learning. Here, we introduce PhenoLearn, a toolkit developed for biologists to generate annotations on 2D specimen images using deep learning. PhenoLearn integrates graphical user interfaces (GUIs) within its two main modules, PhenoLabel for image annotatio

TOLEDO: enhancing Maestro GUI for non-expert users to perform massive MD simulations.

Classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulates the dynamical evolution of biological systems at the atomic level. Using MD in conjunction with high-performance computing (HPC) architectures, we can evaluate the possible interactions between a ligand library against one protein target to find a drug that can influence a protein target to cure a disease. Simultaneously, we can also obtain information about their dynamic evolution. One of the primary software packages for MD simulations is Desmond, which employs Maestro for the setup, execution, and analysis of MD through a graphical user interface

Modelling and Correcting the Effects of Tremor on Touchscreen Interaction.

Essential tremor and Parkinson's tremor are common movement disorders, affecting approximately 7% of adults over 65, increasing with age. Although numerous studies have used keyboard timing, stand-alone sensors, or smartphone sensors to identify and measure tremor severity, relatively little research has isolated and examined how tremor impacts overall mobile interaction and usability models. This study investigated controlled fixed levels of induced tremor in a standardised ISO pointing task to quantify the effect on usability models of different levels of tremor. Tremor was induced using a w

PaVarDB: a database and web platform for missense variant analysis in Pseudomonas aeruginosa using an end-to-end BVbase pipeline.

Genomic variant data are useful in detecting and treating antibiotic-resistant bacteria. However, there are no bacterial genomic variant databases that catalogue the variations in the different genes across strains. In this work a Nextflow- and Docker-based end-to-end pipeline, BVbase, that can automate the creation of databases from raw high-throughput sequences has been created to fill this lacuna with Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a case study. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative adaptable pathogen with multiple antibiotic resistances that causes various types of infections, including res

VRrec: A zero-coding open-source VR body-motion capture tool for behavioral research.

We present VRrec, an open-source, motion-tracking and recording tool for PC-based virtual reality (VR). The tool addresses a persistent gap in VR-based experimental research by enabling real-time capture of head, hand, and optional body-tracking data without the need to code. VRrec runs discreetly in the background, collecting positional and rotational data as researchers engage participants with third-party VR applications. This design lets researchers use flexible paradigms that leverage off-the-shelf VR content, eliminating the need to build or modify custom software. However, because VRrec

Take a shot! Natural language control of intelligent robotic X-ray systems in surgery.

PURPOSE: The expanding capabilities of surgical systems bring with them increasing complexity in the interfaces that humans use to control them. Robotic C-arm X-ray imaging systems, for instance, often require manipulation of independent axes via joysticks, while higher-level control options hide inside device-specific menus. The complexity of these interfaces hinder "ready-to-hand" use of high-level functions. Natural language offers a flexible, familiar interface for surgeons to express their desired outcome rather than remembering the steps necessary to achieve it, enabling direct access to

Conversations in Content and Context: Can We Teach AI to Chat About Drawings?

An innovative chatbot incorporates a drawing tool allowing users to draw pictures that symbolise the nature of their chronic pain. Rather than simply ask 'What did you draw?" what if the chatbot could engage the user to provide insight into symbols and images related to pain and suffering? The system was tested on images that included features of clinical interest in a first step toward a chatbot able to 'see' and discuss visual input. Such a chatbot has the potential for retrospective and prospective applications. *Contains childhood sexual abuse references.

A Serious Game for the Assessment of Visuomotor Adaptation Capabilities during Locomotion Tasks Employing an Embodied Avatar in Virtual Reality.

The study of visuomotor adaptation (VMA) capabilities has been encompassed in various experimental protocols aimed at investigating human motor control strategies and/or cognitive functions. VMA-oriented frameworks can have clinical applications, primarily in the investigation and assessment of neuromotor impairments caused by conditions such as Parkinson's disease or post-stroke, which affect the lives of tens of thousands of people worldwide. Therefore, they can enhance the understanding of the specific mechanisms of such neuromotor disorders, thus being a potential biomarker for recovery, w

Filling the Gap between Research and Market: Portable Architecture for an Intelligent Autonomous Wheelchair.

Under the umbrella of assistive technologies research, a lot of different platforms have appeared since the 1980s, trying to improve the independence of people with severe mobility problems. Those works followed the same path coming from the field of robotics trying to reach users' needs. Nevertheless, those approaches rarely arrived on the market, due to their specificity and price. This paper presents a new prototype of an intelligent wheelchair (IW) that tries to fill the gap between research labs and market. In order to achieve such a goal, the proposed solution balances the criteria of pe

Alterations in Physical Demands During Virtual/Augmented Reality-Based Tasks: A Systematic Review.

The digital world has recently experienced a swift rise in worldwide popularity due to Virtual (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) devices. However, concrete evidence about the effects of VR/AR devices on the physical workload imposed on the human body is lacking. We reviewed 27 articles that evaluated the physical impact of VR/AR-based tasks on the users using biomechanical sensing equipment and subjective tools. Findings revealed that movement and muscle demands (neck and shoulder) varied in seven and five studies while using VR, while in four and three studies during AR use, respectively, compa

Spatially-aware group interaction design framework for collaborative room-oriented immersive systems.

Room-oriented immersive systems are human-scale built environments that enable collective multi-sensory immersion in virtual space. Although such systems are currently seeing increasing applications in public realms, limited understanding remains regarding how humans interact with the virtual environments displayed within. Synthesizing virtual reality ergonomics and human-building interaction (HBI) knowledge allows us to investigate these systems meaningfully. In this work, we develop a model of content analysis based on hardware components of the Collaborative-Research Augmented Immersive Vir

CathSym: Device and Method to Bring Haptic Feedback to Urinary Catheterization Training.

Urinary catheterization is one of the most widely taught procedures in the medical field. Current simulation-based training methods allow the students to be trained on non-realistic mannequins that do not adequately develop their psychomotor skills. This lack of proper training translates into increased likelihood of the medical professional causing damage to the patients' urethra in the form of false passages when faced with a difficult catheterization. The leading cause of this damage is the overuse of force that diverts the catheter head into the soft tissue. With the emergence of haptic fe

A comparative study of navigation interfaces in virtual reality environments: A mixed-method approach.

Recently, motion-based navigation interfaces have been widely utilized in virtual reality (VR) environments. However, improper navigation interfaces can negatively impact the VR experience, and because different interfaces have different characteristics, the navigation experience may vary. Although comparative studies have been conducted with various interfaces, information obtained by focusing on qualitative evaluation was limited. Thus, this study explores the effects from three navigation interfaces (walking-in-place (WIP), joystick, and teleportation) on user performance, sense of presence

Mitigating Cybersickness in Virtual Reality Systems through Foveated Depth-of-Field Blur.

Cybersickness is one of the major roadblocks in the widespread adoption of mixed reality devices. Prolonged exposure to these devices, especially virtual reality devices, can cause users to feel discomfort and nausea, spoiling the immersive experience. Incorporating spatial blur in stereoscopic 3D stimuli has shown to reduce cybersickness. In this paper, we develop a technique to incorporate spatial blur in VR systems inspired by the human physiological system. The technique makes use of concepts from foveated imaging and depth-of-field. The developed technique can be applied to any eye tracke

Interfaces with the peripheral nervous system for the control of a neuroprosthetic limb: a review.

The field of prosthetics has been evolving and advancing over the past decade, as patients with missing extremities are expecting to control their prostheses in as normal a way as possible. Scientists have attempted to satisfy this expectation by designing a connection between the nervous system of the patient and the prosthetic limb, creating the field of neuroprosthetics. In this paper, we broadly review the techniques used to bridge the patient's peripheral nervous system to a prosthetic limb. First, we describe the electrical methods including myoelectric systems, surgical innovations and

[Virtual reality exposure therapy for anxiety disorders].

Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental disorders in Germany. Exposure therapy has proven effective in treating anxiety disorders. During exposure therapy, patients are systematically confronted with the feared stimulus or situation. Exposure therapy can be conducted in vivo or in sensu. Recently, a considerable amount of research on virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) in the treatment of anxiety disorders-especially phobias-has been published. During virtual reality exposure therapy, patients are confronted with a virtual representation of the feared stimulus or situation. T
