AIM: To determine the expression and distribution of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors (TIMPs) in the normal human iris and ciliary body.
METHODS: Seven postmortem human eyes were fixed with formalin. The iris and ciliary body were dissected out and embedded in paraffin. The expression of MMPs -1, 2, 3, and 9, and TIMPs 1-4 in the iris and ciliary body was determined by a novel immunofluorescence technique and the results graded by masked observers.

Behçet disease is a chronic systemic relapsing vasculitis. Ocular clinical signs in Behçet disease usually include signs of inflammation in the uvea, vitreous and retina. This report describes a rare case of a full-blown systemic exacerbation of Behçet disease with ocular involvement including conjunctival ulceration with the absence of uveal or retinal involvement.

Scleritis is typically a severe painful inflammatory disorder of the eye. This process may involve the sclera but also the cornea, adjacent episclera, and underlying uvea and therefore threaten vision. Careful clinical history taking, detailed ocular examination, appropriate investigation for systemic disease, and timely intervention with the use of immunosuppressive drugs when necessary has improved the long-term outcome of patients with scleritis.

Oxidative and particularly photo-oxidative processes are critical factors many ocular conditions but are often poorly recognized by those investigating ocular disease. The author discusses oxidative stress in inflammatory processes of the conjunctiva, cornea, and uvea; in cataract formation in the lens; in retinal degeneration; and in optic nerve pathologic conditions, inflammatory in optic neuritis and degenerative in glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: To report the posterior segment (uvea and retinal) manifestations and imaging characteristics of eyes of patients with and after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
METHODS: We searched the PubMed/MEDLINE database to identify relevant articles using the following search terms: COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, retina, uvea, optic nerve, retinal findings, posterior segment manifestations, and endophthalmitis. The uvea provides a suitable substrate for tumor cells because it is the most vascular portion of the eye. Most primary and metastatic ocular neoplasms involve the choroid, with the most common being malignant melanoma. We review the features of uveal melanomas seen on MRI and CT images and evaluate certain neoplastic and non-neoplastic intraocular lesions that may simulate uveal melanomas.

The clinical history and the pathohistological findings of both eyes of a homosexual man with AIDS and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection are reported. A CMV panuveitis with cytomegalic transformation of vascular endothelium was present in the posterior and anterior uvea as well as a typical CMV retinitis. In addition, a CMV infection of smooth muscle cells in the iris and ciliary body as well as of endothelial cells of the cornea and the aqueous drainage system were found for the first time.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) of the uvea is a rare disease that usually responds to systemic steroids or low-dose radiotherapy. We present an atypical case of bilateral JXG involving the entire uveal tract that presented with an aggressive phenotype. The patient was unresponsive to topical and systemic corticosteroids, cyclosporine, and maximal doses of radiation therapy. The disease was ultimately controlled with the alkylating agent chlorambucil.

The 32P uptake test used in the differential diagnosis of 912 cases yielded an accuracy rate of 94.82% for intraocular lesions behind the equator, and 85.15% for lesions of the anterior uvea. The highest error rate occurred in patients with suspected tumors of the iris and ciliary body. It seems advisable to take a 40% difference on the uptake as the limit between a positive or negative test result.

BACKGROUND: Intraocular metastases arising from solid tumors are found in approximately 2% of patients with metastatic tumor diseases and are therefore more frequent than originally assumed. They often affect the uvea and are associated with a poor prognosis. Due to the difficult diagnosis and an inconsistent treatment regimen, ophthalmologists have a special responsibility here.
OBJECTIVE: This article gives a summary of the various types of intraocular metastases with respect to clinical features, diagnostics, treatment and prognosis as well as recommendations for follow-up care.

A premature infant with unilateral aniridia and congenital ectropion uveae, contralateral Rieger anomaly, bilateral congenital glaucoma, and hydrocephalus was found to have ring chromosome 6. The findings are consistent with multiple manifestations of a neural crest-derived maldevelopment of the anterior segment and central nervous system. Comparison with the 14 previously reported cases of ring chromosome 6 illustrates the phenotypic variability of this syndrome.
