BACKGROUND: At present, there is an increased interest in the vaginal microbiome. It is believed that microbes play equally important roles in the vagina, including the modulation of neuronal pathways, as in the gut. However, in man as well as in animals, the vagina is the least well-studied part of the female reproductive system. The vagina, a fibromuscular tract, having two main functions, i.e., childbirth and sexual intercourse, is mainly innervated by the pudendal nerve and the pelvic splanchnic nerves (the uterovaginal nerve plexus) containing sympathetic, parasympathetic and nociceptive

BACKGROUND: Polypoid endometriosis (PEM) is a rare type of endometriosis, frequently mimicking a malignant tumor. We report on a patient with PEM over a 10-year span who had symptoms at age 16.
CASE: A 20-year-old woman presented with massive vaginal hemorrhage and spontaneous abortion, having symptoms of dysmenorrhea, anal distending pain, and vaginal bleeding since adolescence. Imaging showed multiple polypoid neoplasms of the rectum and vagina connecting to the huge mass in a cul de sac. After exploration and excision, the pathology revealed PEM.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal and urethral histology is important to understanding the pathophysiology of the pelvic floor.
METHODS: En bloc removal of 4 female cadaveric pelvises was performed, with 18 to 25 serial sections obtained from each. The vaginal and urethral lengths were divided into distal and proximal sections; urethra was divided into anterior and posterior segments as well. Innervation and vasculature were qualified as small and large and quantified per high-power field.
RESULTS: The mean vaginal length was 7.45 cm, and the mean urethral length was 3.38 cm. A distinct vaginal fibromuscu

Background. Primary leiomyosarcoma of the vagina is an exceedingly rare diagnosis. Current estimates are that this tumor could at most represent a mere 0.062% of malignant neoplasms in the female genital tract, although in actuality it is likely far less common. Case Presentation. A 70-year-old female gravida 3 para 2 with new onset palpable vaginal mass and pink vaginal discharge is diagnosed with primary leiomyosarcoma of the vagina. Chemotherapy is complicated by acute Lyme disease, and the patient requires a robotic-assisted total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and parti

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare, slow-growing soft tissue tumor that usually arises in the pelvis and perineal regions of women in reproductive age, with a marked tendency to local recurrence. Because of its rarity, it is often initially misdiagnosed. Surgical resection is the main treatment modality of aggressive angiomyxoma. We describe a case of a vaginal aggressive angiomyxoma in a 47-year-old woman in which the diagnosis was only made after histological examination. The etiology, presentation, diagnosis and management of this rare tumor are outlined. Angiomyxoma of vulva and vagina refer

The primary small cell carcinoma of the vagina is rare, and it is a highly aggressive malignancy with no consensus regarding the treatment of this tumor. The survival rate for patients treated in the early stages is around two years. We related the case report of a patient of 41 years with a vegetative and necrotic lesion in left vaginal wall, in middle and upper third, and involvement of parametrium in its proximal third and medium third. A biopsy showed a small cell undifferentiated carcinoma composed of epithelial cells with round nuclei, oval or elongated, hyperchromatic nuclei, with littl

A case of a papillary squamotransitional cell carcinoma (PSTCC) of the vagina with a follow-up of 3 years is presented here. The characteristics of this case support a squamous rather than urothelial origin of this rare entity. Unlike its counterparts in the cervix uteri, the clinical behavior of vaginal PSTCC is more favorable than squamous cell carcinoma. Histological and clinical features are compared to those of previously described cases of vaginal and cervical PSTCC.

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid metaplasia of the uterine cervix and vagina has previously been described, yet few well-documented cases exist. The tendency of the cervical and vaginal epithelium to undergo reactive changes as, for example, adenosis, squamous hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis, and parakeratosis is well known. Such changes can be secondary to uterine prolapse or to other causes that produce continuous irritation. The presence of ectodermal appendages (e.g., sebaceous glands and/or hair follicles), on the other hand, is less common. This is an interesting phenomenon, specially taken into consi

Most rhabdomyosarcomas of the vagina (RMSV) occur in infants and children up to six years old. RMSV in elderly patients is extremely rare. We report a case of a 70-year-old woman with RMSV. She had received surgery for uterine endometrial cancer one year before and a vaginal polypoid tumor was noted during routine follow-up vaginal examination. She was referred to our department for radiation therapy following partial tumorectomy of the lesion. She was given three sessions of intra-vaginal radiation therapy, once a week with 6 Gy at 7.5 mm below the vaginal surface and external irradiation of

Neoplasms of the vulva and vagina account for less than 5% of all female genital tract cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) represents more than 70% of the cases in both locales, followed by melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, Paget's disease, and other carcinoma subtypes. Until recently, only few cases had been analyzed by chromosome banding techniques and karyotyped, and also the number subjected to molecular cytogenetic analysis remains low. To understand better the genetic changes harbored by the neoplastic cells in cancer of the vulva and vagina, we analyzed cytogenetically 51 such tumors,

OBJECTIVES: To discuss the epidemiology, treatment, and psychosocial implications of preinvasive disease of the lower genital tract.
DATA SOURCES: Review articles, research studies, and government publications.
CONCLUSIONS: Routine cervical cytology has been one of the most successful public health screening programs accomplished over the last 50 years. However, our success has plateaued. The focus now is to address existing barriers to screening and treatment, and to develop an effective triage protocol for the management of abnormal cervical cytology. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING CARE: Nurses

In order to fix the prolapse of vaginal vault after vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy we use the technique of transvaginal sacrospinous colpopexy. The authors used this technique for the firs time when they have made neovagina at male transsexual. The technique is as follows: after making the tunnel between the bladder and recrum, under the control of the left hand fingers the vagina, or neovagina is fixed to sacrospinous ligament. No complications or recidive followed the operation ever. The authors point out that the skillfull surgeon should know very well the anatomy of both male or female

Neoplasms of the vulva and vagina together account for less than 5% of all female genital tract cancers, and very few cases have been analyzed using chromosome banding techniques. We report the karyotypic findings in a consecutive series of ten tumors of the vulva and vagina; in addition to five squamous cell carcinomas of the vulva, we present the first cytogenetic analysis of two malignant melanomas and a Paget disease of the vulva, as well as an adenocarcinoma and a squamous cell hyperplasia of the vagina. Whereas no clonal karyotypic changes were found in the squamous cell hyperplasia of t

BACKGROUND: Acute and late injuries of vulva and vagina are frequent and potentially serious complications in radiotherapy of gynecologic tumors. They still are reported poorly in literature.
METHODS: Based on a literature search a survey will be given of the modalities, which are used or recommended for prophylaxis or treatment of these radiation injuries. The principles of the different measures will be discussed with available study results.
RESULTS: Hygiene measures and the topical application of antimicrobial or granulation stimulating substances, which is mostly based on long standing

To clarify the pathogenic relationships between human papillomavirus (HPV) and vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN), we examined 71 vaginal biopsy specimens by histopathology and immunohistochemistry and analyzed the presence of HPV DNA by blot hybridization at Tm - 40 degrees C using an HPV 58 probe (PBM-58 method). We found 27 cases of VAIN in patients with previous hysterectomy or antecedent or concomitant cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and 44 cases of VAIN in patients without any abnormal findings on the cervix and the vulva. Histopathologically, 53 of 71 cases were graded as

High-resolution magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with pelvic phased-array and endoluminal coils provides information on vaginal abnormalities heretofore not available with other imaging modalities. Congenital anomalies of the vagina can result from disorders of lateral fusion of the descending müllerian ducts and ascending urogenital sinus, developmental absence of the müllerian ducts, or disorders of vertical fusion. In these conditions, MR imaging can depict the presence or absence of the vagina, cervix, and uterus and help determine whether these structures contain a septum or are duplicated

The authors have examined 379 women for infection by Chlamydia trachomatis, performing vaginal smears and routine bacterial cultures. C. trachomatis was discovered in 33.2% of the women, most frequently accompanied by erosion of the collum, cervicitis and CIN-Ca. Women with C. trachomatis had the following levels of vaginal purity: 1-44.4%, 2-23.0%, 3 and 4-29.4%, 3.2% -leukocytes only. Leukocytes were present in significantly more women with level 1 of vaginal purity than in the control group. Additional infections (Gardnerella vaginalis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Candida albicans, Escherichi
