The Interplay between Vascular Function and Sexual Health in Prostate Cancer: The Potential Benefits of Exercise Training.

Prostate cancer and its associated treatments can cause significant and lasting morbidities, such as cardiovascular and sexual dysfunctions. Various interventions have attempted to prevent or mitigate these dysfunctions. This review summarises the available evidence on the effects of exercise training on markers of cardiovascular disease (as assessed via vascular health outcomes) and sexual health in this prevalent cancer population. Current studies predominantly report blood pressure outcomes as a marker of vascular health, as well as various questionnaires assessing sexual health parameters,

Cardiorespiratory fitness in relation to cerebral vascular and metabolic health in older adults with coronary artery disease.

This study investigated whether higher cardiorespiratory fitness (VO₂peak) is associated with better cerebral vascular and metabolic health-specifically cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR), cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO₂), and oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) across healthy older adults and patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Thirty-seven healthy adults (65.3 ± 8.3 years old) and 35 CAD patients (66.4 ± 9.3 years old) underwent calibrated fMRI using hypercapnic and hyperoxic gas challenges (including carbogen) to quantify gray matter CBF, CVR, CMRO₂,

Noninvasive Methods to Assess Vascular Health in Children and Adolescents: Current State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives.

Vascular remodeling, which occurs with normal aging and several pathological states, has emerged as a critical factor in assessing cardiovascular health in children. Changes in vascular structure, stiffness, and function have been shown to be associated with different diseases in children and adolescents, including metabolic syndrome, congenital heart disease, and childhood cancer. However, there is a lack of data on the ability of these vascular parameters to predict outcomes and guide therapy in the pediatric population. This paper provides an overview of the physiological principles related

Effects of singing on vascular health in older adults with coronary artery disease: a randomized, crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: The impact of singing on cardiovascular health has not been extensively studied. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of singing on cardiovascular biomarkers in an aging population with coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: Participants had three study visits separated by 2-7 days, according to a randomized, researcher-blinded, crossover, controlled design: (1) a 30-min period of live singing with an in-person music therapist, (2) a 30-min period of singing along to an instructional video and (3) a 30-min rest (control). Primary outcomes included macrovascular endo

Impact of body mass index on markers of vascular health in normotensive women with history of pre-eclampsia.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity and pre-eclampsia (PE) are both associated with vascular dysfunction, which translates into an increased risk for cardiovascular disease in later life. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is an interaction between body mass index (BMI) and a history of PE in their effects on vascular health. METHODS: This was an observational case-control study of 30 women with a history of PE who were compared with 31 age- and BMI-matched controls who had an uncomplicated pregnancy. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD), carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and carotid distensib

Magnitude and relevance of change in health-related quality of life in patients with vascular malformations treated with sirolimus.

INTRODUCTION: Vascular malformations are rare congenital anomalies of the vascular system, which can involve the capillaries, veins, arteries, lymphatics, or a combination of vessel types. Patients with vascular malformations experience an impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) because of their symptoms (e.g., pain, swelling, and bleeding) and psychosocial distress. Sirolimus is an effective drug used in the medical treatment of these patients; however, relatively little is known about the effect of sirolimus on specific changes in the HRQoL domains and its magnitude. METHODS: The ma

The role of cardiovascular health and vascular events in the relationship between excessive daytime sleepiness and dementia risk.

Many studies suggest a relationship between excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and dementia incidence, but the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. The study aimed to investigate the role of cardiovascular burden in the relationship between EDS and dementia incidence over a 12-year follow-up in community-dwelling older adults. We performed analyses on 6171 subjects (aged ≥65 years) free of dementia and vascular disease at baseline. Participants self-reported EDS at baseline and an expert committee validated both prevalent and incident dementia. We defined cardiovascular burden by a low Card

Association of Cardiovascular Health Score With Early- and Later-Onset Diabetes and With Subsequent Vascular Complications of Diabetes.

BACKGROUND Little attention has been paid to how well the American Heart Association's cardiovascular health (CVH) score predicts early-onset diabetes in young adults. We investigated the association of CVH score with early- and later-onset diabetes and with subsequent complications of diabetes. METHODS AND RESULTS Our sample included 4547 Black and White adults in the CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) study without diabetes at baseline (1985-1986; aged 18-30 years) with complete data on the CVH score at baseline, including smoking, body mass index, physical activity, d

Vascular architecture as a diagnostic marker for differentiation of World Health Organization thymoma subtypes and thymic carcinoma.

AIMS: Thymomas and thymic squamous cell carcinomas (TSQCCs) are rare thymic epithelial tumours. Data on angiogenesis and vascular phenotype in these tumours are limited, and no study has taken histological World Health Organization (WHO) subtypes into account. The aim of this study was to compare vascularization, pericytes coverage and expression of angiogenic growth factors in different WHO-defined subtypes of thymoma METHODS AND RESULTS: Vascular density, diameter and architecture and expression of α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptor-β (PDGFRβ), vascul

Relating patenting and peer-review publications: an extended perspective on the vascular health and risk management literature.

PURPOSE: This investigation identifies patent applications published under the international Patent Convention Treaty between July 2010 and January 2011 in three significant fields of vascular risk management (arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis, and aneurysms) and investigates whether the inventors have also published peer reviewed papers directly describing their claimed invention. RESULTS: Out of only 48 patent documents that specifically addressed at least one of the above-mentioned fields, 15 had immediate companion papers of which 13 were published earlier than the corresponding pate

Uveal vascular bed in health and disease: lesions produced by occlusion of the uveal vascular bed and acute uveal ischaemic lesions seen clinically. Paper 2 of 2.

From studies on postmortem anatomical descriptions of the uveal vascular bed, it was generally concluded that occlusion of PCA or its branches should not produce an ischemic lesion. However, in vivo studies have recorded that the PCAs and their branches, right down to the terminal choroidal arterioles, and the choriocapillaris, have a segmental distribution in the choroid, and that PCAs and choroidal arteries function as end-arteries. This explains the basis of the occurrence of isolated inflammatory, ischemic, metastatic, and degenerative choroidal lesions, which are usually localized. Thus,

Race Differences in Vascular Health Persist After Adjustment for Reproductive History in Midlife Women: A SWAN Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women, and non-Hispanic Black (NHB) women exhibit accelerated vascular aging compared with non-Hispanic White (NHW) women. Traditional risk factors do not fully explain these racial disparities, prompting increased interest in reproductive history as a potential contributor. We examined race differences in reproductive history and their contribution to vascular health among midlife women using data from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN). METHODS: Using cross-sectional SWAN data, 2,935 postmenopausal pa

Treatment burden and health literacy among patients referred to a vascular access clinic: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Treatment burden, defined as 'the work of being a patient', can have implications on clinical outcomes and quality of life. Delivering minimally burdensome care requires recognition of the distribution of treatment burden in specific patient populations, and consideration of its key drivers whilst designing healthcare services. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional study was performed to assess treatment burden among patients attending a regional vascular access surgery clinic over a 2-year period. Health literacy was synchronously measured to assess patients' ability to process

Modest association between health literacy and risk for peripheral vascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Health literacy plays a crucial role in managing chronic health conditions. Previous studies have revealed the positive relationship between health literacy and diabetes knowledge but few studies have focused on peripheral vascular disease (PVD) in diabetes in relation to health literacy in diabetes management. This study investigated the relationship between the risk for PVD and health literacy level with other determining factors among patients with type 2 diabetes. METHOD: We conducted a survey on health literacy using the Mandarin Multidimensional Health Literacy Questionnaire

Exercise training improves vascular function and secondary health measures in survivors of pediatric oncology related cerebral insult.

Adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors of pediatric oncology related cerebral insult are vulnerable to numerous treatment-induced deficits that significantly enhance cardiovascular disease risk. Regular exercise improves endothelial function, fitness, body composition and musculoskeletal function which may reduce predisposition for cardiovascular disease. Here we assessed the feasibility and effectiveness of a 24-week exercise intervention on cardiovascular, physical and metabolic outcomes in this population. Thirteen survivors (6 male, 7 female; median age 19 y (range 16-23 y) were recrui

Vascular disease risk factors, urinary free cortisol, and health histories in older adults: shyness and gender interactions.

We studied relationships between shyness and health during a health screening survey of older adults (ages 50-88) living in an active retirement community in the southwestern United States (n = 232). As in previous studies of infants, older individuals with hay fever, insomnia and constipation were more shy than those without these problems. Shy persons overall showed higher sitting systolic blood pressure and a larger fall in orthostatic systolic blood pressure on standing; shy men had a greater prevalence of hypertension histories than did low-shy men. Shy subjects of both sexes had lower HD

Deciphering the Distinct Vascular Liver Injury Induced by Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids: From the Invasive Species to Health Hazard.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are the most common plant-derived toxins present in numerous herbal and food products, but their environmental transfer pathways and toxicological mechanisms remain unclear. This study establishes a complete contamination pathway from environmental source to molecular target. We identified the invasive plant Bidens alba as a novel PA producer and provided the first evidence of transfer to honey by detecting corresponding PAs and characteristic Bidens alba pollens in local samples. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that PA toxicity fundamentally differs from classic

Visionary AI: Decoding Systemic Vascular Health and Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy Through Retinal Imaging and Artificial Intelligence.

Pregnancy orchestrates a rare physiological transformation across vascular, immune, and metabolic systems. When this dynamic balance is disrupted - as in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy - the consequences can be life-threatening, spanning maternal mortality, fetal growth restriction, and elevated long-term cardiovascular risk. Despite clear links to early placental dysfunction and systemic endothelial disruption, current screening remains clinically imprecise, biologically opaque, and logistically challenging. A shift is urgently needed - from detecting maternal complications late in gesta

Percutaneous crossover rotational atherectomy recanalization: A case about health status and patency in a multimorbid vascular patient.

INTRODUCTION: Endovascular treatment of the common femoral artery (CFA) and its branches is often challenging. Sometimes, stent placement cannot be avoided. Furthermore, stent placement in this area carries several risks for complications. We present a challenging case in which we used a rotational atherectomy device percutaneously in cross-over-technique to recanalize the external iliac artery in combination with the femoral bifurcation, all in one session - and - without the need for a femoral stent in a multimorbid patient. We also tried to gain more insights in the patient's perspective an
