BACKGROUND: Vascular rings are congenital vascular anomalies of the aortic arch complex which cause compression of the trachea and/or oesophagus. A variety of investigations may lead to diagnosis of these anomalies, including bronchoscopy and computed tomography. During the latter, image acquisition and processing use the multi-detector row technique and new reconstruction algorithms, producing high-resolution images which can be visualised as complex, three-dimensional renditions.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess and compare the roles of bronchoscopy and multi-detector row computed tomo

A case is presented of vascular ring caused by right aortic arch with mirror-image branching and left ductus arteriosus. In this case, the descending aorta was located right of the tracheoesophagus and the left ductus arteriosus connected to the descending aorta far below the arch, producing compression of the esophagus only. Through median sternotomy, the ligation and division of the ductus was performed with concomitant repair of ventricular septal defect.

A young kitten was presented with regurgitation of food at weaning. Episodes of respiratory distress and cyanosis were also present. The cause of food regurgitation was a perioesophageal vascular ring caused by left descending aorta and a right ligamentum arteriosum. This type of vascular ring has not previously been described. There was also anomalous development of the right subclavian artery and a large ventricular septal defect. The respiratory distress and cyanosis was most probably caused by a combination of tracheal compression by the vascular ring and a polycythaemia associated with th

Anomalies of the arterial branches of the arch of the aorta are rare, with the aberrant right subclavian artery being the most common of this anomaly. Majority of the anomalies are asymptomatic and often discovered as incidental findings. In the great majority of the symptomatic cases, the presentation may be either with breathlessness or dysphagia or both. This is in addition to the nature of the intrinsic arterial disease of the aberrant vessel, especially in adult patients; and unless borne in mind, the diagnosis is often missed leading to delays and wrong treatment. In this report we prese

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on the management of complete vascular rings (CVR) in adults. We reviewed our institution's surgical experience in the management of these patients.
METHODS: Between 2010 and 2019, all adult patients that underwent a thoracotomy for a CVR repair were identified. We performed a retrospective medical record review of these patients to characterize their demographics and outcomes.
RESULTS: Among the 5 patients identified (3 females, 2 males; Mean age 50 ± 9 years), anatomic variants were right arch and Kommerell diverticulum (KD) in 3 (60%) and double aortic arch

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital vascular rings are rare in adults. The management is challenging when vascular rings present with concomitant aortic aneurysm and Kommerall's diverticulum.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 68year old patient with a congenital vascular ring in the form of right sided aortic arch, with a retroesophageal left subclavian artery arising from an aneurysmal Kommerell's diverticulum. In addition, the patient had aneurysmal distal aortic arch and proximal descending aorta, causing severe symptomatic tracheal compression. The patient was successfully managed by de

BACKGROUND: Vascular rings (VR) may cause severe tracheomalacia and upper airway obstruction (UAO). Increased pulmonary artery pressure and cardiac dysfunction have been described in patients with chronic UAO, but has not been investigated in infants with obstruction associated with VR. The aim of this study is to evaluate myocardial strain in infants with UAO due to VR.
METHOD: Demographic characteristics, respiratory symptoms, percentage of tracheal obstruction measured and classified using Computer Tomography, and lung function testing (LFT) were collected. Left (LV) and right ventricle (R

We present the case of a neonate born with an unusual complex vascular ring formed by a left-sided aortic arch that had retroesophageal course to join a right-sided descending aorta and a very large right-sided arterial ductus from the right pulmonary artery to the descending aorta. Associated finings included aortic arch hypoplasia, aberrant right subclavian artery, and aberrant origin of the left pulmonary artery from the aorta. We focus on the role of computed tomography angiography in the preoperative and postoperative assessment of this complex anomaly.

OBJECTIVE: The use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is becoming increasingly common in the treatment of congenital heart defects, particularly for the division of vascular rings. We compare the short-term outcomes of vascular ring division by VATS as opposed to open thoracotomy and discuss new issues raised by VATS division of vascular rings.
METHODS: Over a 3-year period, 47 pediatric patients underwent isolated division of a vascular ring. We reviewed preoperative, operative, and postoperative data. For patients whose vascular ring contained a ligamentous or atretic segment, c

OBJECTIVE: Congenital aortic vascular ring may present after birth with variable degrees of respiratory distress due to tracheal compression. The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate in utero tracheal patency in correlation with postnatal outcome.
METHODS: During an eight-year period, fetuses with aortic arch abnormality encircling the trachea and forming a complete ring were recruited for the study. Tracheal patency was classified as: no compression, partial compression, or complete compression. Postnatal MRI/CTangio studies were performed and outcome data was retrospectively anal

RATIONALE: The occurrence of congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) and vascular ring (VR) is extremely rare.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of left CCAM with VR consisting of a left aortic arch and right descending aorta with left tracheal compression causing atelectasis.
DIAGNOSES: A high-risk male neonate with the diagnosis of left CCAM was diagnosed at 20 weeks gestational age by antenatal ultrasound. Chest CT revealed multiple cysts in the left inferior lung. Cardiac CT showed VR consisting of a left aortic arch and right descending aorta with left tracheal compression c

CASE DESCRIPTION: 3 alpaca crias and cadavers of an alpaca cria and a llama cria were evaluated for evidence of esophageal dysfunction.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: All 5 crias were between 3 and 5 months of age when clinical signs developed, and all had a thin body condition when examined. Clinical signs included coughing, regurgitation, and grossly visible esophageal peristaltic waves. A barium esophagram was used to diagnose esophageal obstruction, megaesophagus, and a vascular ring anomaly (VRA). Fluoroscopy was used to evaluate deglutition, esophageal peristalsis, and the extent of esophageal dila

UNLABELLED: Vascular rings (VR) may produce extrinsic compression of trachea and/or esophagus. Diagnosis relies on nonspecific clinical data from resulting compression and image studies, mainly angiography, computed tomography, and cardiovascular MRI. Because of their low incidence, diagnosis is often missed. The role of bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy is controversial, but these procedures might establish for the first time the diagnostic suspicion of VR. This communication was aimed to determine to what extent endoscopic manifestations lead the clinician to suspect the presence of a VR and, m

The present study was designed to examine the effects of venom from the scorpion Leiurus quinquestriatus hebraeus (Lqh) on the contractility of rat aortic rings. We first examined the effect of Lqh venom on the contractile tension of isolated rat vascular aortic rings and then whether long-term exposure to the venom reduces the contractility of vascular smooth muscle by increasing the production of nitric oxide. Following the administration of 33 microg/mL of crude Lqh venom, contractile tension increased by 18.9 +/- 11.4 percent. The administration of 2.4 x 10(-7) M noradrenaline (NA) led to

Atypical mycobacterium is rare in children. There are few case reports of childhood pulmonary diseases caused by atypical mycobacterium. The case of a 20-month-old boy who had stridor and respiratory distress is presented. Chest x-ray showed right-sided narrowing of the trachea and left-sided aortic knob. Ziehl-Neelsen stain showed acid-fast bacilli. The culture showed Mycobacterium malmoense.
