Vegetarian diet in dialysis patients: A significant gap between actual intake and current nutritional recommendations.

Nutritional status is a predictor of mortality and morbidity in dialysis patients. This study aimed to assess dietary behaviors in dialysis patients compared to the recommendations of the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative.Ninety five dialysis patients recruited from a hospital completed a 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire. Body weight, energy requirements, protein requirements, albumin, normalized protein catabolic rate, and 25(OH) vitamin D levels were measured.Of the 95 patients, 11 (11.6%) were below the desirable body mass index range, 59 (62.1%) were within the desired range,

Association between self-reported vegetarian diet and the irritable bowel syndrome in the French NutriNet cohort.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in using diet counselling in the management of patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Among new emerging diets, vegetarian diets (VD) seem to be experiencing an important popularity, partly because of their alleged health benefits. A recent study performed among a rural Indian population showed that predominant VD could be associated with IBS. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed at assessing the association between the VD and IBS, among a large French cohort, the NutriNet-santé study. METHODS: Subjects participating in the NutriNet-Santé c

Vegan-vegetarian low-protein supplemented diets in pregnant CKD patients: fifteen years of experience.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy in women with advanced CKD becoming increasingly common. However, experience with low-protein diets in CKD patients in pregnancy is still limited. Aim of this study is to review the results obtained over the last 15 years with moderately restricted low-protein diets in pregnant CKD women (combining: CKD stages 3-5, proteinuria: nephrotic at any time, or > =1 g/24 at start or referral; nephrotic in previous pregnancy). CKD patients on unrestricted diets were employed for comparison. STUDY PERIOD: January, 2000 to September, 2015: 36 on-diet pregnancies (31 singleton deliv

The impact of the lacto-ovo vegetarian diet on the erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity: a study in the Romanian population.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have shown that vitamin B12 scavenges superoxide anion as effectively as superoxide dismutase (SOD), and has a key role in the defense against oxidative stress. The status of vitamin B12 is suboptimal in a substantial number of vegans and even vegetarians. We therefore evaluated in lacto-ovo vegetarians (LOVs) who did not take vitamin B12 supplements the impact of the duration of this diet on the vitamin B12 status, the erythrocyte SOD activity and the serum malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The study group included 38 non-vegetarians

A randomized clinical trial of a standard versus vegetarian diet for weight loss: the impact of treatment preference.

BACKGROUND: With obesity rampant, methods to achieve sustained weight loss remain elusive. OBJECTIVE: To compare the long-term weight-loss efficacy of 2 cal and fat-restricted diets, standard (omnivorous) versus lacto-ovo-vegetarian, and to determine the effect of a chosen diet versus an assigned diet. DESIGN, SUBJECTS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 176 adults who were sedentary and overweight (mean body mass index, 34.0 kg/m(2)). Participants were first randomly assigned to either receive their preferred diet or be assigned to a diet group and second, were given their diet

Influence of fruit consumption and fluoride application on the prevalence of caries and erosion in vegetarians--a controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Caries and erosion are common diseases of the dental hard tissues. The influence of vegetarianism on the development of caries and erosion has scarcely been investigated in the past. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of fruit consumption and topical fluoride application on the prevalence of caries and erosion in vegetarians. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In 100 vegetarians and 100 nonvegetarians, a dental examination was performed. The indices for decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) and surfaces (DMFS) were determined. DMFT and DMFS were subdivided into d

Analysis of the Provision of Plant-Based, Vegetarian and Omnivorous Meals in UK Care Homes for Older People.

INTRODUCTION: With concerns growing around the impact of western diets on human and planetary health, a global transition is required towards primarily plant-based diets. Although this subject has been the focus of increased research, the potential for meat and dairy reductions in care home settings has not been explored. This study assessed the provision of omnivorous, vegetarian and plant-based meals in UK care homes. METHODS: In total, 52 menus representing 136 care homes for older people were analysed against a scoring system that reflects the degree to which a menu is plant-forward. Menu

Food sources of macro- and micronutrients in young children and adults following vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous diets.

PURPOSE: Understanding key nutrient sources in the rapidly changing food environment is essential for advising balanced food choices across different diets. We examined the main food sources of macro- and micronutrients in Finnish children and their caregivers following vegan (VGN), vegetarian or pesco-vegetarian (VGT), and omnivorous (OMN) diets. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, food consumption and nutrient intakes were analyzed from 3-day food records and compared across diet groups in 73 children aged 2–7 years (n = 29, n = 18, and n = 26 for VGN, VGT, and OMN diets, respectively) a

Growth parameters and IGF-1 axis biomarkers differ among omnivorous, vegetarian, and vegan children.

PURPOSE: Whereas an increasing number of families choose a vegan or a vegetarian diet, the effects of a plant-based nutrition on height and BMI of children and their IGF-1- and IGFBP-3-serum concentrations as measures for growth and development are not entirely described. METHODS: 7344 serum samples were investigated from 2,508 healthy participants in the age of 3 months to 19 years. Anthropometric measurements as well as IGF-1-, and IGFBP-3-serum concentrations were compared between dietary groups using optimal 1:3 pair matching (from the age of 10). RESULTS: Vegan children were shorter tha

A path to sustainable and healthy diets: modeling ovo-lacto-vegetarian food-based dietary guidelines.

INTRODUCTION: The development of healthy and sustainable food-based dietary guidelines (FBDGs) is an essential measure to support the transformation to sustainable and resilient food systems. Shifting to more sustainable and healthy plant-based diets can benefit both human and planetary health, provided these diets are nutritionally adequate, healthy, environmentally friendly, and culturally acceptable. METHODS: This study aimed to obtain a nutritionally adequate and healthy ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet that reduces greenhouse gas emission (GHGE) and land use (LU) by over 45% in comparison to th

Long-Term Vegetarian and Vegan Diets in Older Adults Are Associated With Inadequate Intakes of Protein and Micronutrients.

BACKGROUND: Plant-based diets are linked to health benefits but may challenge adequate nutrient intake in older adults. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the nutrient, particularly protein intake, of Dutch older adults with decades-long adherence to vegetarian or vegan diets. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, dietary intake was assessed using 3-d food records and compared with a Dutch reference group. Protein quality was assessed using the Meal Protein Quality Score (MPQS) and Protein Adequacy and Quality Score (PAQS). Group comparisons utilized Kruskal-Wallis tests. RESULTS: Th

Dietary patterns and mortality in clinical obesity: comparative risks of meat-based, pescatarian, and vegetarian diets.

BACKGROUND: Plant-based and pescatarian diets are generally considered healthier alternatives to meat-based diets; however, their specific effects on mortality risk among individuals with clinical obesity remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the associations between different dietary patterns and the risks of all-cause and premature mortality in patients with clinical obesity. METHODS: A nationwide cohort study using UK Biobank data included 154,986 participants with clinical obesity. Dietary patterns among these individuals were categorized as regular meat-eaters, occasional meat-e

Nudging towards sustainable dining: Exploring menu nudges to promote vegetarian meal choices in restaurants.

Food choice behavior plays a large role in achieving sustainability goals. Meat in particular has a negative environmental impact as compared with plant-based food - and is more frequently chosen in restaurant contexts. To increase plant-based meal choices in restaurants, we tested three nudges for menus that are likely to be implemented by restaurant owners: a hedonic label (e.g., artisanal vegetable burger), a chef's recommendation (specifying the vegetarian option as the chef's favorite), and a salience nudge (a box around the vegetarian option). In an online experiment, we showed participa

An Evidence Base for Heart Disease Prevention using a Mediterranean Diet Comprised Primarily of Vegetarian Food.

Dietary patterns, nutrition, physical activity, air pollution, tobacco smoke, ethnicity and genetics affect heart disease. Vegetarian food diets are one of the important factors in its prevention and control. People living in the five blue zones, mostly consuming the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), have the highest longevity in the world and the least incidence of heart disease. There are several forms of heart pathology, e.g., the most common coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, heart valve disease and abnormal heart rhythms. Heart disease is the leading caus

Case Report: A Case of Late-Onset Combined Methylmalonic Acidemia and Hyperhomocysteinemia Induced by a Vegetarian Diet.

Methylmalonic acidemia is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disease. However, because of the atypical clinical symptoms, the type of late-onset methylmalonic academia is often misdiagnosed. Especially when the blood vitamin B12 and folic acid levels are normal, it is not easy to think of this disease. Herein we report a 9-year-old girl who developed normally on a relatively balanced diet before 7 years of age. However, she presented with fatigue and attention deficit when she followed a vegetarian diet. Laboratory examination showed moderate macrocytic anemia, high levels of homocysteine, h

Review of Vitamin B12 deficiency in pregnancy: a diagnosis not to miss as veganism and vegetarianism become more prevalent.

Vegetarianism and veganism are increasingly popular. The Food Standards Agency, biennial Food and You Survey of adults aged 16 years and over living in the UK, found that between 2012 and 2018 the proportion of people who reported never consuming dairy products had increased from 2% to 5%. However, veganism risks development of vitamin B12 deficiency as it is not available from plant sources. Moreover, its impact may be slow to be detected because body stores of vitamin B12 can last years. There is currently no published guidance on antenatal diagnosis and management of vitamin B12 deficiency.
