Popliteal venous aneurysm: a report on three cases presenting with chronic venous insufficiency without embolic events.

OBJECTIVES: Popliteal venous aneurysms (PVA) are rare, but represent a significant potential source of thromboembolus. Most often the patients present with pulmonary embolism, which can also be detected in patients presenting with chronic venous insufficiency. METHODS: Three patients without any clinical evidence of pulmonary emboli were diagnosed by venous duplex scanning during workup for superficial venous insufficiency. None of the PVAs contained thrombus. The mean diameter of the aneurysm was 30 mm. Surgery included tangential aneurysmectomy and lateral venorrhaphy. RESULTS: None of the

Venous ultrasonography findings and clinical correlations in 104 Thai patients with chronic venous insufficiency of the legs.

INTRODUCTION: The pattern of venous reflux in Thai patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) was studied in correlation with clinical manifestations. METHODS: Ultrasonography findings and clinical data were prospectively collected and retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: CVI was found in 104 legs of 79 patients (mean age 59.8 ± 12.5 years; C4: 24.1%, C5: 8.9%, C6: 67.1%). 6.7% of the legs had a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The prevalence of superficial vein reflux (SVR), deep vein reflux (DVR), and combined SVR and DVR in 90 legs without previous venous surgery was 82.2%, 63.3

Intersaphenous veins in a population with a high prevalence of chronic venous insufficiency.

BACKGROUND: Intersaphenous veins connect the great saphenous vein and the small saphenous vein. While the femoral intersaphenous vein (vein of Giacomini) is well known, evidence on crural intersaphenous veins remains limited. This study aimed to investigate intersaphenous veins in elderly internal medicine patients and compare the findings with previous data from healthy volunteers. METHODS: In this single-centre study, 106 lower extremities were examined by ultrasound in internally ill patients with a median age of 68.0 years; 74.5% had chronic venous insufficiency. All detected intersapheno

Cerebral Venous Insufficiency as a Contributing Factor in Dementia: An Emerging Hypothesis.

Emerging evidence suggests that disturbances in cerebral venous outflow may play a meaningful role in the development and progression of cognitive impairment. The brain's glymphatic system, which facilitates the clearance of metabolic waste, including β-amyloid and tau, relies on stable venous pressure gradients to drive perivascular and interstitial fluid movement. Venous insufficiency, whether from structural narrowing or functional outflow obstruction, can disrupt these gradients, reducing clearance efficiency and promoting protein accumulation, neuroinflammation, and white matter injury. Revisiting Heinz-Lippman disease as a complication of chronic venous insufficiency.

Chronic venous insufficiency with and without ulceration is a common complication of varicose veins. Heinz-Lippmann disease is a potentially underreported complication of chronic venous insufficiency that involves heterotopic ossification of the peri-wound that might contribute to the chronicity of venous leg ulcers. Most commonly, heterotopic ossification is associated with traumatic injury. We report the cases of three patients with chronic venous insufficiency and no history of trauma who were found to have subcutaneous calcifications consistent with Heinz-Lippmann disease. Osteomyelitis wa

The influence of exercise on ulcer healing in patients with chronic venous insufficiency.

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcer (VLU) affects millions of people, and yet there have been no major advances in its treatment for many decades. Is it the time to change our approach, and try a multidisciplinary one that could bring about a change? The aim of this study is to evaluate whether a regular, home-based exercise could be influential in healing the VLU. METHODS: Eighty subjects (mean age: 65.13 years) were recruited for 12 weeks. The participants were randomized into a control group (N.=20), a compression therapy group (N.=20), an exercise group (N.=20) and a compression and exercise gro

Insufficient Recanalization of Thrombotic Venous Occlusion-Risk for Postthrombotic Syndrome.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between recanalization rate of occluded veins after deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and development of postthrombotic syndrome (PTS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients treated for DVT of the lower limbs were evaluated 12-36 months after acute DVT. Of 100 patients, 34 developed PTS, defined as Villalta score of ≥ 5. Symptoms and signs of PTS were assessed, and ultrasound examination of the veins was performed, checking for residual thrombus and presence of reflux. RESULTS: Patients with PTS were older (64.0 y vs 55.5 y; P = .007) and more frequently experie

Iliac vein stenosis is an underdiagnosed cause of pelvic venous insufficiency.

BACKGROUND: Reflux in the ovarian veins, with or without an obstructive venous outflow component, is reported to be the primary cause of pelvic venous insufficiency (PVI). The degree to which venous outflow obstruction plays a role in PVI is currently ill-defined. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 227 women with PVI who presented to the Center for Vascular Medicine from January 2012 to September 2015. Assessments and interventions consisted of an evaluation for other causes of chronic pelvic pain by a gynecologist; preintervention and postintervention visual analog scale (VAS

Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency as a cause of inner ear diseases.

CONCLUSION: The present study confirms a correlation between chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) diagnosis and Ménière's disease (MD). CCSVI could be considered a new ultrasound vascular pattern of the cerebrospinal venous system in patients affected by definite MD. Conversely, the present results showed that CCSVI cannot be considered a pathogenic mechanism for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between CCSVI and MD and to evaluate if CCSVI can be considered a risk factor also for ISSNHL. M

A systematic review of circulating markers in primary chronic venous insufficiency.

OBJECTIVES: The etiology of primary chronic venous insufficiency is poorly understood. This systematic review aimed to summarize published evidence assessing the association of circulating markers with primary chronic venous insufficiency. METHODS: A search was undertaken through the PubMed database using the terms "venous insufficiency" and "biological marker" or "plasma" or "serum". Search limits included English language, human subjects and studies with publication dates from 1994. Studies which classified patients using the Clinical-Etiology-Anatomy-Pathophysiology system of venous diseas

No evidence of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency at multiple sclerosis onset.

OBJECTIVE: An impaired cerebrospinal venous drainage, defined as chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI), has been recently hypothesized to be the possible cause of multiple sclerosis (MS). We investigated this hypothesis by studying the occurrence of CCSVI in clinically isolated syndromes (CISs) suggestive of MS. METHODS: Fifty consecutive patients presenting with a CIS and evidence of dissemination in space of the inflammatory lesions (ie, possible MS [pMS]) underwent a detailed diagnostic workup, including extracranial and transcranial venous echo-color Doppler sonography (ECDS-

LINFAVENIX: improvement of signs and symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency and microangiopathy.

The aim of this independent study was to demonstrate the rapidity of the efficacy of an oral venotropic compound (Linfavenix, including natural elements) in patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Two groups of patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) ankle swelling) were treated with Linfavenix or with below-knee elastic compression. The average ambulatory venous pressure (AVP) at inclusion (both groups)was 56.2 (range 48-55) with a refilling time (RT) shorter than 10 seconds. These parameters indicated a severe level of venous hypertension. There were no significant differe

[Popliteal vein entrapment in patients with unspecific symptoms of venous insufficiency].

Popliteal vein entrapment must be taken in consideration in patients with symptoms of venous insufficiency. Leg edema, swelling, calf pain, and muscle cramps are all unspecific signs. Most patients thus far have presented with deep vein thrombosis or chronic venous insufficiency. Popliteal entrapment syndrome must be taken into account in younger patients in whom predisposing factors are absent and chronic calf swelling is notable. Diagnosis is easily confirmed by noninvasive stress testing with duplex imaging and pencil Doppler probe placed over the posterior tibial artery. Additionally, digi

Non-elastic compression: an alternative in management of chronic venous insufficiency.

Non-elastic compression has been used to treat venous insufficiency of the lower extremities for more than 150 years. The best and most recognized example is the Unna boot. When compared with other dressings, the Unna boot has performed as well as or better than other forms of compression. While the Unna boot is used worldwide, a 3- or 4-layer dressing has emerged as the dressing of choice in treating severe chronic venous insufficiency in the United States and English-speaking European countries. In the United States, non-elastic compression can also be applied as a CircAid legging. This semi
