Vernal keratoconjunctivitis with giant papillae on the inferior tarsal conjunctiva.

PURPOSE: In vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), giant papillae are commonly observed on the superior tarsal conjunctiva. We found 3 cases of giant papillae on the inferior tarsal conjunctiva, and diagnosed them as being VKC based on their clinical and histopathological features. METHODS: Three patients with inferior tarsal giant papillae were studied. In 2 patients, the giant papillae were resected for therapeutic purposes. Immunohistochemical analysis was carried out by indirect immunofluorescent staining using anti-CD3, anti-CD20, anti-CD35 antibodies. RESULTS: In all 3 patients, giant papi

Treatment of asymmetrical vernal keratoconjunctivitis with supratarsal corticosteroid injection.

A 6-year-old Thai girl presented with itching, redness and copious discharge in both eyes. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy of the left eye revealed cobblestone papillae with marked ptosis while in the right eye only small papillae were observed. Punctuate epithelial keratitis was noted only in the left eye. There were no associated factors for giant papillary conjunctivitis (ie, suture or contact lens). The cobblestone papillae in the left eye persisted after maximal topical and oral antiallergic medications. Two doses of supratarsal corticosteroid (20 mg of triamcinolone acetonide) injection without

Severe vernal keratoconjunctivitis successfully treated with subcutaneous omalizumab.

A 12-year-old boy with severe mixed limbal and palpebral vernal keratoconjunctivitis experienced persistent ocular symptoms despite treatment with topical corticosteroids or cyclosporine. Signs and symptoms resolved completely with monthly subcutaneous omalizumab, an immunomodulating biologic agent. To our knowledge, this is the first report of its use as a monotherapy agent to treat vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

Assessment of corneal alterations by confocal microscopy in vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a bilateral chronic, seasonally exacerbated inflammation of the ocular surface that especially affects male children and young boys. AIM: To evaluate the corneal microscopic features of patients affected by VKC and to assess whether some corneal changes were associated with specific ocular symptoms and/or signs. METHODS: 20 children aged between 4 and 14 years were enrolled. All patients underwent corneal confocal microscopy by Confoscan CS3 (Nidek). 350 images of the central cornea of each eye were obtained with a ×40 noncontact lens 3,5 micr

Fluid-filled scleral contact lenses in vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to report on the use of fluid-filled scleral contact lenses (F-ScCL) in patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed charts of four patients who had worn F-ScCL (PROSE, Boston Foundation for Sight, Needham Heights, MA) from July 2006 for VKC with two associated conditions; keratoconus and limbal stem-cell deficiency (LSCD). Any previous refractive correction or complications were noted. The main goal of fitting F-ScCL was to improve visual acuity in keratoconus and to improve the ocular microenvironment in LSCD.

LASIK flap interface deposition in limbal vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

Limbal vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is an uncommon chronic allergic eye disease. It is generally seen in young males and is characterised by limbal papillae and superficial keratitis. While the condition usually resolves with age, treatment is necessary to alleviate symptoms and reduce the risk of permanent corneal damage. A 25-year-old male presents with recurrent red, itchy eyes. He had undergone an uncomplicated bilateral LASIK procedure five years previously. Slitlamp examination shows limbal chemosis, superficial keratitis and an unusual yellow-white deposition that tracks along the

Altered expression of neurotransmitter receptors and neuromediators in vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that autonomic innervation is involved in the pathogenesis of mucus hypersecretion, goblet cell hyperplasia, and conjunctival hyperreactivity. OBJECTIVE: To determine the expression of neurotransmitters and neurotransmitter receptors in vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) tissues to evaluate whether neurogenic inflammation plays a role in this ocular atopic-related disorder. METHODS: Biopsy specimens of upper tarsal conjunctiva from 8 VKC patients with active inflammation and from 4 healthy subjects were processed for immunohistochemistry using anti-M1, an

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis and intestinal parasitic infestations in black children.

The study aimed at finding out any association between vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and intestinal worm infestations in black children in Nigeria. This is a report of a case-control study of a total of 117 cases of VKC and 198 controls, who were newly presenting to two hospitals in Ibadan. The controls were comparable to the cases in many respects. While 67 (57%) of cases admitted to previous passage of worms, 59 (50.5%) children actually had parasitic infestations. Of these 59 children, 30 (51%) were due to roundworm, 12 (20%) to hookworm, 14 (24%) to protozoal infestation and others, e.

Histamine and tryptase levels in allergic conjunctivitis and vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

Tryptase is useful as a specific and accurate indicator of mast cell activation, whereas histamine, a mast cell's major mediator, also exists in basophils. The aim of this study is to investigate histamine and tryptase levels in allergic conjunctiva. We measured histamine and tryptase levels in conjunctival epithelial cell suspension of children with allergic conjunctivitis (AC) and vernal kerato-conjunctivitis (VKC), and controls, and we evaluated correlations with clinical observations. Both the histamine and tryptase levels in VKC were significantly higher than controls (p < 0.05, p < 0.01)

Limbal vernal keratoconjunctivitis with a hypertrophic limbal mass lesion.

A case of limbal vernal keratoconjunctivitis associated with a hypertrophic mass lesion measuring 8 X 5 X 3 mm is reported. The histopathology of this mass, which consisted of hyperplastic epithelium with eosinophilic infiltration and thickened subepithelial stroma of irregular hyperplastic collagenous connective tissue interspersed with numerous eosinophils and inflammatory cells, is presented. A large limbal-mass lesion such as this has not been previously described in association with limbal vernal keratoconjunctivitis.
