An unusual case is reported in which a posttraumatic peudomeningomyelocele developed over many years inside the body of a fractured lumbar vertebra, eroding the pedicle and causing progressive neurological deficit. The wall of the sac was mostly formed by the scalloped bar bone, and partly by a membrane resembling the dura. The terminal part of the conus medullaris and some nerve roots of the cauda equina formed the contents and parts of the wall of the outpouching of the subarachnoid space into the vertebral body. A comparison is drawn between this lesion and formation of an "enlarging fractu

Two patients with Gaucher's disease and radiographic findings in the spine similar to sickle cell hemoglobinopathy are reported, making a total of four known patients with Gaucher's disease who have these steplike vertebral endplate deformities. Serial films of a patient having Gaucher's disease compared with patients having sickle cell hemoglobinopathy suggest that different events lead to formation of the vertebral deformities. In Gaucher's disease, there is an initial collapse of the entire vertebral body with subsequent growth recovery peripherally. In sickle cell hemoglobinopathy, the end

This paper reports a case of cervical vertebral body deformation with gradually worsening posterior paresis in a Great Dane. The ventrocranial part of the body of the seventh cervical vertebra was severely eroded and deformed. This vertebra was tilted in relation to the sixth cervical vertebra producing a stenosis of the spinal canal which was demonstrated by myelography. Spondylolisthesis of the second type of G e a r y's classification was diagnosed. 99mTc-polyphosphate showed no concentration in the affected vertebra as would be found where bony tissues of different maturities are present,

Background: Traditional treatment modalities for vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) include bed rest, pain medications, muscle relaxants, back braces, and physical therapy. In cases where conservative treatment proves ineffective, a new procedure called core decompression of the vertebral body is explored. Core decompression of the vertebral body has the potential to lower and stabilize the intraosseous pressure, resulting in enhanced blood circulation, which contributes to pain reduction. In this trial, we evaluated the efficacy of core decompression of the vertebral body in patients with

The bone density of thoracolumbar vertebral columns (T1 to L5) from 18 individuals was measured using quantitative computed tomography and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Three hundred six isolated vertebral bodies were tested in a materials test device to determine their compressive strength. Between T1 and L5 the mean segmental increase in bone mineral content was 0.3 g, while the corresponding mean decrease in trabecular density was 4.7 HU. Midvertebral body cross-sectional area increased by an average of 46 mm2 per segment and the mean segmental increase in compressive strength was 0.17

Objectives Bronchial lumen to pulmonary artery diameter (BA) ratio has been utilized to investigate pulmonary pathology on high-resolution CT images. Diseases affecting both the bronchi and pulmonary arteries render the BA ratio less useful. The purpose of the study was to establish bronchial lumen diameter to vertebral body diameter (BV) and pulmonary artery diameter to vertebral body diameter (AV) ratios in normal cats. Methods Using high-resolution CT images, 16 sets of measurements (sixth thoracic vertebral body [mid-body], each lobar bronchi and companion pulmonary artery diameter) were a

PURPOSE: Single-fraction radiation surgery for spine metastases is highly effective. However, a high rate (20-39%) of vertebral body fracture (VBF) has been associated with large, single-fraction doses. We report our experience using multifraction stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: All patients who were treated with multifraction SBRT for spine metastases at our institution between 2009 and 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. SBRT was delivered in 2 to 5 fractions using the Cyberknife System (Accuray, Sunnyvale, CA). Patients were followed clinically and with m

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) is a percutaneous treatment for cancer-related vertebral compression fractures (VCF). Posterior vertebral body wall (PVBW) involvement is considered a contraindication for BKP. This study assesses whether BKP is safe and effective for cancer-related VCFs involving the PVBW.
METHODS: This study analyzed data on 158 patients with 228 cancer-related VCFs who underwent BKP. One hundred and twelve patients had VCFs with PVBW defects, and 46 had VCFs with no PVBW defect. Outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at 3 months.
RESULTS: In the PVBW

This study investigated the effect of endplate deformity after an osteoporotic vertebral fracture in increasing the risk for adjacent vertebral fractures. Eight human lower thoracic or thoracolumbar specimens, each consisting of five vertebrae were used. To selectively fracture one of the endplates of the middle VB of each specimen a void was created under the target endplate and the specimen was flexed and compressed until failure. The fractured vertebra was subjected to spinal extension under 150 N preload that restored the anterior wall height and vertebral kyphosis, while the fractured end

Most pseudoaneurysms after traumatic vertebral artery injuries are caused by penetrating or blunt injuries without vertebral fractures. Here, we report a cervical spinal cord injury in a patient with a giant vertebral artery pseudoaneurysm within a split cervical vertebral fracture. An 82-year-old man presented with a history of complete paralysis of the left side of his body due to basilar artery occlusion. He fell while riding in a wheelchair and presented with obstructive respiratory failure 2 days before transfer to our hospital. Radiological examination revealed C4-5 split fractures with

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) rarely cause vertebral osteomyelitis; however, the clinical characteristics of vertebral osteomyelitis caused by NTM are poorly understood due to its rarity. A 74-year-old man with lung cancer was treated with prednisolone for immune checkpoint inhibitor-associated immune-related adverse events. He had been experiencing mild back pain without febrile episodes for five months, and was admitted to the hospital for worsening back pain and progressive paraplegia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed spinal cord compression at T4-5 due to fractures of the T5 and T7 ve

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective.
PURPOSE: Over past one and half decade, ready-to-use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatible spinal implants have changed the clinical practice and economics of spinal surgery. These are beyond reach of majority of population of developing countries like India due to financial reasons and also availability in remote areas. There is a growing need for a MRI compatible cost-effective spinal implant of proven quality. The authors used bone cement spacers for the said purpose for various level spine surgeries.

UNLABELLED: The authors present a new implant for vertebral body replacement in the thoracic and lumbar spine. The titanium implant is designated for reconstruction of the anterior column in injury, posttraumatic kyphosis or tumor of the thoracolumbar spine. The instrumentation has to be supplemented by a stabilizing implant. After positioning, the implant is distracted in situ, through which best contact to adjacent end-plates and 3-dimensional stability should be provided. The possibility of secondary dislocation or loss of correction should thereby be minimized.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA1997eng
The estimation of vertebral fracture risk in individuals with suspected osteopenia is commonly based on measurements of lumbar spine bone density. The efficacy of vertebral size and deformity, as assessed by vertebral morphometry, in the prediction of fractures has been less studied. In an ex vivo investigation the regional relationships between vertebral size, vertebral deformity, bone density and compressive strength throughout the thoracolumbar spine were examined. In 16 vertebral columns (T1-L5) the bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) of each segment were measured usi

PURPOSE: VBT is increasingly being used in the lumbar spine to preserve mobility. Surgeons have noted differences in complications and outcomes among single thoracic (T), single lumbar (TL/L), and bilateral (B) VBT, but evidence has been limited to small, separate case series. We aim to comprehensively assess complications and outcomes of vertebral body tethering (VBT) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in the pediatric population. We hypothesize that the three approaches will have similar curve correction and surgical outcomes, and rates of major complications and reoperations.
