Menière's disease: morphological findings in eighth nerve and vestibular end organs.

37 patients with advanced Menière's disease were operated on by translabyrinthine 8th nerve neurectomy or middle fossa vestibular neurectomy. Cochlear and vestibular nerves, epithelia of the utricular macula and ampullar crista of horizontal canal were studied. All specimens were fairly well preserved and the microscopic studies suggested that there is no general deterioration of these structures even in long-standing, advanced Menière's disease, but some minor deviations from normal are present in individual cells.

Investigation of the Effectiveness of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (taVNS) and Vestibular Rehabilitation in Patients with Unilateral Vestibular Hypofunction.

Background: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a frequently used neuromodulation method in recent years. While the mechanism of improvement in diseases such as epilepsy, dementia, and depression is being studied, its potential effect on vestibular dysfunction is also being investigated. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of transcutaneous auricular VNS (taVNS) on the vestibular symptoms of unilateral vestibular hypofunction (UVH). Methods: Forty patients diagnosed with UVH were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1 received vestibular rehabilitation. Group 2 received taVNS an

Impact of vestibular nerve preservation on facial and hearing outcomes in small vestibular schwannoma surgery: a technical feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Management of small vestibular schwannomas (VSs) remains controversial. When surgery is chosen, the preservation of facial and cochlear nerve function is a priority. In this report, we introduce and evaluate a technique to anatomically preserve the vestibular nerves to minimize manipulation and preserve the function of the facial and cochlear nerves. METHODS: The vestibular nerve preservation technique was prospectively applied to resect small VS tumors in patients with serviceable preoperative hearing (American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) class A or

Is the nerve origin of the vestibular schwannoma correlated with vestibular evoked myogenic potential, caloric test, and auditory brainstem response?

CONCLUSIONS: The results of the caloric test, vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP), and auditory brainstem response (ABR) in patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS) did not show clear correlation with the nerve origin of the tumor but with tumor size. When we focused on patients with VS within the internal acoustic canal (IAC), neither the nerve origin of the tumor nor the tumor size showed clear correlation with the results of these tests. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the correlation of the nerve origin of VS, superior or inferior vestibular nerve, with the results of function tes

Vestibular modulation of muscle sympathetic nerve activity assessed over a 100-fold frequency range of sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation.

We have previously shown that sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation (sGVS), delivered at 0.2-2.0 Hz, evokes a partial entrainment of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). Moreover, at lower frequencies of stimulation (0.08-0.18 Hz) sGVS produces two peaks of modulation: one (primary) peak associated with the positive peak of the sinusoidal stimulus and a smaller (secondary) peak associated with the trough. Here we assessed whether sGVS delivered at 0.05 Hz causes a more marked modulation of MSNA than at higher frequencies and tested the hypothesis that the primary and secondary peaks

Air-conducted and skull-tap cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in determining nerve division involvement in vestibular schwannoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Air-conducted and skull-tap cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (AC-cVEMP and Tap-cVEMP) have been shown to be very promising tools in clinical practice. They are noninvasive, easy to obtain and - importantly - they require little time and the cost of the instruments is low. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the combined use of ACand Tap-cVEMPs as a diagnostic tool for advanced assessment of vestibular schwannoma in determining tumor origin, and to investigate whether the results are helpful for a surgeon as an additional source of info

Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential in Hypoglossal Nerve Schwannoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Schwannoma of the hypoglossal nerve is rare. This case report documents an atypical abnormality of the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) in a patient with schwannoma of the hypoglossal nerve. The observed abnormality was attributed to the proximity of the hypoglossal nerve to the spinal accessory nerve in the medullary cistern and base of the skull. PURPOSE: To report cVEMP abnormality in a patient with hypoglossal nerve schwannoma and provide an anatomical correlation for this abnormality. RESEARCH DESIGN: Case report. STUDY SAMPLE: A 44-yr-old woman. DATA
