Isolated vestibular areflexia after blunt head trauma.

The sudden unilateral loss of vestibular function is a frequent cause of vertigo. This condition is called vestibular neuronitis or vestibular neuritis. Its cause remains unknown, but many authors consider it to be a sequel of vestibular viral infection. We report the history and clinical findings of 5 patients in whom a unilateral vestibular loss occurred after head trauma. None of these patients complained of hearing loss. In all cases, the vertigo gradually subsided over days or weeks. The follow-up showed the partial recovery of vestibular function in 2 cases, while vestibular areflexia pe

Middle ear pressure and dysfunction of the labyrinth: is there a relationship?

Relationships between middle ear pressure and non-infection-related cochleovestibular dysfunction have been suggested by several authors. According to some data, vertiginous attacks can be prevented by the insertion of a ventilation tube in patients suffering from Meniere's syndrome. The aim of our study was to investigate if the incidence of eustachian tube malfunction and pathologic middle ear pressure is frequent, and if routine implantation of ventilation tubes is reasonable in ears with dysfunctions of the labyrinth, including clinical Meniere's syndrome. So, we determined in our pressure

Positional test in acute vestibular disorders.

With the aid of th positiogram, a quantitative recording of th positional test, it was possible to study the intensity of nystagmus in three acute vestibular diseases (vestibular neuronitis, Meniere's disease and sudden hearing loss with vestibular involvement). Patients with vestibular neuronitis in the acute stage showed a higher intensity of nystagmus during the positional test than patients passing through the irritation stage of Menière's disease. Especially patients suffering from vestibular neuronitis complained also subjectively about such an intense vertigo that they were seized by a

Quantification of tracking eye movements in patients with neurological disorders.

Tracking eye movements were studied in 20 healthy subjects and in 24 patients with vestibular neuronitis, disorders within the frontal cortex, the cerebellum or the brain stem. The tracking tests were performed at six different target velocities between 10-60 degrees s-1 and different parameters were evaluated. The maximum velocity gain of smooth pursuit as normal in the group with vestibular neuronitis but reduced in the groups with disorders within the frontal cortex, cerebellum and the brain stem. The total amplitude of tracking and amplitude of smooth pursuit were normal in the groups with

Convergence of linear acceleration and yaw rotation signals on non-eye movement neurons in the vestibular nucleus of macaques.

Roughly half of all vestibular nucleus neurons without eye movement sensitivity respond to both angular rotation and linear acceleration. Linear acceleration signals arise from otolith organs, and rotation signals arise from semicircular canals. In the vestibular nerve, these signals are carried by different afferents. Vestibular nucleus neurons represent the first point of convergence for these distinct sensory signals. This study systematically evaluated how rotational and translational signals interact in single neurons in the vestibular nuclei: multisensory integration at the first opportu

Ca2+-activated K+-current density is correlated with soma size in rat vestibular-afferent neurons in culture.

Vestibular-afferent neurons (VANs) transmit information about linear and angular accelerations during head movements from vestibular end organs to vestibular nuclei. In situ, these neurons show heterogeneous discharge patterns that may be produced by differences in their intrinsic properties. However, little is known about the ionic currents underlying their different firing patterns. Using the whole cell patch-clamp technique, we analyzed the expression of Ca(2+) and Ca(2+)-activated K(+) currents (I(KCa)) in primary cultured neurons isolated from young rats (p7-p10). We found two overlapping

Responses of neurons in the caudal medullary lateral tegmental field to visceral inputs and vestibular stimulation in vertical planes.

The dorsolateral reticular formation of the caudal medulla, or the lateral tegmental field (LTF), has been classified as the brain's "vomiting center", as well as an important region in regulating sympathetic outflow. We examined the responses of LTF neurons in cats to rotations of the body that activate vestibular receptors, as well as to stimulation of baroreceptors (through mechanical stretch of the carotid sinus) and gastrointestinal receptors (through the intragastric administration of the emetic compound copper sulfate). Approximately half of the LTF neurons exhibited graviceptive respon

Properties of otolith-related vestibular nuclear neurons in response to bidirectional off-vertical axis rotation of the rat.

In decerebrate rats, the responses of tilt-sensitive neurons in the lateral and descending vestibular nuclei were studied during constant velocity 10 degrees off-vertical axis rotations (OVAR) in the clockwise (VW) and counterclockwise (CCW) directions. Seventy three otolith-related units showed a sinusoidal position-dependent discharge modulation to OVAR of both directions; 20 of these showed clipped firing rates in parts of a 360 degree OVAR cycle. With increase in the velocity of rotation (1.75-15 degrees/s), one group of units (n = 36) showed a stable ratio of bidirectional response sensit

Decision making in vestibular neurectomy.

Indications for vestibular neurectomy have traditionally included intractable Meniere's disease, chronic vestibular neuronitis, vestibular hydrops, and posttraumatic vertigo. Between 1990 and 1993, 28 retrosigmoid vestibular neurectomies were performed for various peripheral vestibulopathies for which medical management failed. These were divided into two groups: Meniere's disease and non-Meniere's disease. The non-Meniere's disease group included the diagnosis of vestibular hydrops and chronic vestibular neuronitis. Results were analyzed by using the 1985 American Academy of Otolaryngology (A

Birthdate aligns vestibular sensory neurons with central and motor partners across a sensorimotor reflex circuit for gaze stabilization.

Developing populations of connected neurons often share spatial and/or temporal features that anticipate their assembly. A unifying spatiotemporal motif might link sensory, central and motor populations that comprise an entire circuit. In the sensorimotor reflex circuit that stabilizes vertebrate gaze, central and motor partners are paired in time (birthdate) and space (dorsoventral). To determine if birthdate and/or dorsoventral organization could align the entire circuit, we measured the spatial and temporal development of the sensory circuit node: the vestibular ganglion neurons. Directionally biased neuronal responses to pitch-axis vestibular stimulation in larval zebrafish compared to roll-axis responses.

The vestibular apparatus plays a pivotal role in maintaining postural equilibrium and processing movement signals, underscoring its importance in studying certain neurological disorders. Here, we present a rotating light-sheet microscope, enabling brain-wide functional recordings during dynamic vestibular stimulation along the pitch axes in addition to the roll axis in head-restrained zebrafish larvae. The system incorporates a double galvanometer mirror configuration, is amenable to 3D printing, and enhances scanning efficiency. Employing this apparatus, we have successfully conducted the fir

Galvanic vestibular stimulation-induced activation of C1 neurons in medulla oblongata protects against acute lung injury.

Autonomic nerves, including the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, control the immune system along with their physiological functions. On the peripheral side, the interaction between the splenic sympathetic nerves and immune cells is important for the anti-inflammatory effects. However, the central mechanism underlying these anti-inflammatory effects remains unclear. C1 neurons respond to stressors and subsequently determine the outflow of the autonomic nervous system. We have previously shown that C1 neurons protect against acute kidney injury and found a signaling connection between per

The real identity and sensory overlap mechanism of special vestibular afferent neurons that sense both rotation and linear force.

AIMS: Although the vestibular system has been widely investigated over the past 50 years, there is still an unsolved mystery. Some special vestibular afferent (SVA) neurons responding to both rotation and linear force were found through neurophysiological techniques, however, the sensory overlap mechanism of SVA neurons is still unclear, which may be closely related to vestibular-related diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address the above-mentioned problem, a cupula buoyancy theory was established in the present study, where SVA neurons were considered semicircular canal afferent (SCCA) neu

Vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal reflexes in evaluation of vestibular lesions.

In order to evaluate to what extent different diseases causing vertigo can be detected by studying vestibulo-spinal and vestibulo-ocular reflexes, 146 patients were examined. The diagnosis classes were: periodical attacks, position induced attacks, vestibular neuronitis, brain concussion, cerebrovascular disorders and acoustic neurinoma. Dynamic posturography was performed on all the patients, standard bithermal caloric test on 129 and voluntary saccades on 127 patients. The proportion of pathological test results in posturography exceeded that in the caloric test in all but one diagnosis clas

Anterior cingulate cortex glutamatergic projection neurons modulate motion sickness susceptibility via a cortico-vestibular circuit.

Motion sickness (MS) is a prevalent and debilitating vestibular disorder with limited therapeutic options, yet the cortical mechanisms governing individual susceptibility remain elusive. Using a biaxial rotation mouse model, we investigated the role of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in MS by integrating morphology, calcium imaging, electrophysiology, cell ablation, chemogenetics, and optogenetics. Biaxial rotation induced hypothermia, anorexia, taste avoidance, locomotor hypoactivity, and gait incoordination. ACC pyramidal neurons exhibited enhanced activation and increased intrinsic exci

Pulsed infrared radiation excites cultured neonatal spiral and vestibular ganglion neurons by modulating mitochondrial calcium cycling.

Cochlear implants are currently the most effective solution for profound sensorineural hearing loss, and vestibular prostheses are under development to treat bilateral vestibulopathies. Electrical current spread in these neuroprostheses limits channel independence and, in some cases, may impair their performance. In comparison, optical stimuli that are spatially confined may result in a significant functional improvement. Pulsed infrared radiation (IR) has previously been shown to elicit responses in neurons. This study analyzes the response of neonatal rat spiral and vestibular ganglion neuro

[Vestibular neuritis].

Vestibular neuronitis is an acute disorder of the vestibular apparatus which manifests by sudden vertigo, without apparent cause, and without auditory or neurological symptoms. Clinically and by thermal stimulation tests, it is characterised by unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit. Evolution is favourable in several days to several weeks and prognosis is favourable, although disorders of moderate intensity may rather often persist, in the form of positional vertigo, sometimes paroxysmal, or disorders of equilibrium on abrupt movement. Careful history-taking and clinical examination, routin

A new evaluation of vestibular compensation.

Vestibular compensation process in six patients was examined by means of static (SPG) and kinetic posturography (KPG). SPG was recorded by a stabilometer during standing and KPG was recorded by POLGON so that angular change of shoulder in the frontal plane was measured during stepping. The subjects included three cases with vestibular neuronitis, three cases with bilateral vestibular loss. In vestibular neuronitis, SPG improved earlier than KPG. As a result of vestibular training, initial high levels of SPG and KPG fall precipitously and in the case with sequela, a remarkably high level of KPG

Multifunctional redox modulator prevents blast-induced loss of cochlear and vestibular hair cells and auditory spiral ganglion neurons.

Blast wave exposure, a leading cause of hearing loss and balance dysfunction among military personnel, arises primarily from direct mechanical damage to the mechanosensory hair cells and supporting structures or indirectly through excessive oxidative stress. We previously reported that HK-2, an orally active, multifunctional redox modulator (MFRM), was highly effective in reducing both hearing loss and hair cells loss in rats exposed to a moderate intensity workday noise that likely damages the cochlea primarily from oxidative stress versus direct mechanical trauma. To determine if HK-2 could
