Chronic disease multimorbidity and substance use among African American men: veteran-non-veteran differences.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to explore the extent to which prior military service may moderate the relationship between chronic disease multimorbidity and substance use among African American men in the United States. DESIGN: Data for this cross-sectional study was downloaded from the 2016 -2019 United States (US) National Survey on Drug Use and Health. We estimated three survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression models, where use of each of the following substances served as the dependent variables: illicit drugs, opioids, and tobacco. Differences in these outcomes were

Prevalence of Stranger Harassment of Women Veterans at Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and Impacts on Delayed and Missed Care.

BACKGROUND: Harassment of servicewomen during military service has been well-documented, but harassment of women veterans in Veterans Affairs (VA) health care settings has not been studied systematically. We assessed the prevalence and impacts of harassment among women veterans who use VA health care. METHODS: From January to March 2015, we conducted computer-assisted telephone interviews of randomly sampled women veterans with three or more primary care and/or women's health visits at 1 of 12 VA medical centers. We asked if patients had experienced inappropriate/unwanted comments or behavior

Couple's conflict among veterans seeking PTSD treatment.

There are established links between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and greater conflict among couples with a veteran partner. While there is literature on couples' conflict generally, few studies have identified different conflict themes for veteran couples where one member is seeking treatment for PTSD. This study aimed to explore specific conflict themes among these couples and potential dyadic concordance in conflict themes. The current study examined self-reported themes of conflict among 137 veterans seeking PTSD treatment and their romantic partners (61 matched dyads and 15 unmatch

Military veterans wellness program: Performance measurement framework.

Veterans may struggle with numerous challenges, including the transition to civilian life, physical or mental health issues (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder), substance abuse, barriers to help-seeking, and difficulties accessing care. They are also at an increased risk of suicidal ideation and living without a home compared with the general population. These challenges have been associated with an increased risk for law enforcement interactions. The Military Veterans Wellness Program is a novel program whose mission is to improve the well-being of Veterans in crisis by providing law enforc

Sarcoidosis in Post-9/11 Military Veterans.

Historically, US servicemembers have faced unique environmental hazards that may increase their risk for developing sarcoidosis. Cutaneous sarcoidosis is the most common extrapulmonary manifestation of sarcoidosis and can precede systemic manifestations of the disease. In this article, we review the literature to examine the risk factors and incidence of sarcoidosis in post-9/11 veterans as well as provide recommendations for workup and management. Importantly, we also highlight that sarcoidosis is a presumptive diagnosis under the recently enacted Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT

COVID-19 in Veterans: A Narrative Review.

Veterans are a special population that has been largely ignored during the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Veterans with COVID-19 not only suffered symptoms from the disease but also had a higher risk of further development of in-hospital complications involving multiple organs. This article aims to review the current literature on the epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis, clinical presentation, treatment, and outcome in veterans who contracted COVID-19 during the pandemic, using papers published between January 1, 2020 and August 1, 2021. Forty published papers were considered

Moral injury and chronic pain in veterans.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and chronic pain are highly prevalent and co-morbid among veterans. Moral injury (MI), which results from traumatic experiences that conflict with deeply held moral beliefs, is also associated with pain. However, relationships between different types of exposures to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) and pain have not yet been investigated. In the current study, we investigated these relationships between exposure to PMIEs (betrayal, witnessing, and perpetration) and different types of pain (joint pain, muscle pain, and overall pain intensity), wh
