INTRODUCTION: Acute and delayed negative effects on the respiratory system are a common occurrence during and following veterinary surgery. Although direct mortality is relatively uncommon, pulmonary sequalae as a consequence of intraoperative analgesics and other respiratory-depressing drugs lead to immediate or delayed postoperative respiratory depression (PORD) and other postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) that are surprisingly commonplace.
METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and other databases of peer-reviewed original research, mechanistic studies, c

Polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) is an antiarthritic drug that has been used in veterinary medicine for many years. PSGAG is rapidly distributed to diseased joint tissue after intraarticular or intramuscular administration, as shown in pharmacological studies conducted on a variety of animal species. In diseased joint tissue, PSGAG stimulates: 1) its own incorporation into the cartilage matrix, 2) inhibition of catabolic enzymes, 3) anabolic effects in the synovial and cartilage tissue, and 4) anti-inflammatory effects. Laboratory and clinical studies in humans, rabbits, horses, and dogs

The anatomical terms Plexus chor(i)oideus (CP) and Tela chor(i)oidea (TC) are listed without explanations in the official nomenclature handbooks Terminologia Neuroanatomica and Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria. Definitions of CP and TC exhibit discrepancies in medical dictionaries and anatomy handbooks. The aim of our study was to analyse this problem in detail and to discuss a possible unified use of the terms in science and teaching. The authors conducted a systematic literature review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, identifying and analysing rele

BACKGROUND: Different 3D-printed materials polyactic acid (PLA), polyamide (PA), polycarbonates (PC), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and GreenTEC Pro®I have been considered for surgical templates, but there is a sparity of data about how these materials are affected by steam sterilization. The aim of the current study was to test if and how these materials change morphologically when high temperature, pressure and humidity are applied during the steam sterilization process. The overall aim is to create patient-specific sawing templates for performing corrective osteotomies. After the de

BACKGROUND: Veterinary medicines have been widely used for the prevention and treatment of diseases, growth promotion, and to promote feeding efficacy in livestock. As the veterinary medicine industry has steadily grown, it is crucial to set up a baseline for the quality of medicine as well as the insufficiency or excessiveness of the active ingredients in drug products to ensure the compliance, safety and efficacy of these medicines. Thus, the 10 years data of post-marketing quality control study was summarized to determine the rate and extent of non-compliance of these medicines and to estab

BACKGROUND: Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is an idiopathic chronic disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of vomiting that are often triggered by psychological stressors and circadian rhythms. Although CVS is well documented in human medicine, it has not been previously reported in dogs. This case describes a dog provisionally diagnosed with neurogenic vomiting exhibiting clinical features consistent with a CVS phenotype. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old neutered male Maltese was evaluated for persistent daily vomiting that did not respond to standard antiemetic therapies including maro

Across two studies we investigated the relationship among mindfulness, rumination, depression, stress, anxiety, communication apprehension, and willingness to communicate among veterinary medicine students. Study 1 tested a hypothesized path model of the relationship with 148 third-year students. Study 2 confirmed the path model with second sample of 160 third-year students. Mindfulness had a direct negative relationship with communication apprehension and a direct positive relationship with willingness to communicate, whereas depression, anxiety, and stress each had a direct negative relation

Anitschkow cells (AC) are a peculiar type of stromal cells observed in myocardium, cardiac valves and coronary vessels wall whose origin, characterization and role remain controversial. In human heart, they represent a histological hallmark of Aschoff nodules in rheumatic fever, but they have also been observed in other myocardial pathologies. Firstly, they have been considered a myocyte-derived cells, but light microscopy, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies pointed out that a macrophagic/histiocytic origin cannot be excluded. Many authors also reported extracardiac AC or an Anits

Upon undergoing biomonitoring, the most active dichloromethane extract retrieved from Senna macranthera roots led to the isolation of three main compounds: emodine, physione, and chrysophanol. In this sequence, these compounds revealed a potential antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from animals with mastitis infections with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 20, 90, and 90 μg mL(-1), respectively. Therefore, an herbal soap was also produced from this same active extract. This soap was tested in vitro using gloves contaminated by animals with bov

To appreciate the significance of sales data of antibiotics, data on antibiotic consumption (which were collected for selected food-producing animals within the representative VetCAb pilot study in Germany in 2011) were extrapolated for the total German animal population, and subsequently compared to the antibiotic sales data, which were collected throughout Germany in 2011 for the first time and which were published by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL). The extrapolation was realized based on the average dosage and the number of treatment units determined in the

INTRODUCTION: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver disorder characterized by dysregulated hepatic lipid metabolism, with a continuously rising global incidence and limited safe and effective therapeutic options. Importantly, NAFLD-like conditions, namely hepatic lipidosis or fatty liver syndrome, also prevail in veterinary clinical practice, affecting companion animals (obese cats and dogs) and livestock (periparturient dairy cows, fattening pigs, and broiler chickens). These metabolic liver disorders are primarily induced by inappropriate feeding management a

According to the traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM) theory, Yin deficiency contributes to the acute onset of eclampsia. This condition arises primarily from the substantial loss of blood and nutrients to the foetus during pregnancy, leading to insufficient nutrition and blood supply. Consequently, the muscles and veins are deprived of essential nutrients, which manifests as convulsive symptoms. This case report presents a case in which the TCVM principles of eclampsia treatment were applied to manage seizures-like signs in a python with postpartum Qi and blood deficiency. Following

The rise in psychotropic drug use among students, particularly in Veterinary Medicine, correlates with high rates of mental disorders like depression and anxiety, often exacerbated by academic stress. Factors such as high academic demands, emotional exhaustion, and poor sleep quality contribute to the increased use of medications like antidepressants and anxiolytics. However, in Brazil, there is limited research on the profile and factors associated with this drug use among veterinary students. This study aims to assess the prevalence, patterns, and associated factors of psychotropic drug use

Growth hormone and insulin like growth factor-1 plays an important role in the regulation of body composition and metabolism. Growth Hormone is released from the pituitary through a specific G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) called growth hormone secretagogue receptor 1a expressed in the hypothalamus. Ghrelin is a peptide hormone released from the cells in the stomach, which stimulates appetite and food intake in mammals, regulates gut motility, gastric acid secretion, taste sensation, circadian rhythm, learning and memory, oxidative stress, autophagy, glucose metabolism etc. When the release

The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic resistance of E. rhusiopathiae when isolated from clinical outbreaks of erysipelas in geese to antimicrobials commonly used in poultry production. All isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin alone or with clavulanic acid, with MIC values ranging from 0.016 to 0.125 μg/mL. Ninety-six percent of isolates were fully sensitive to penicillin G (MIC 0.125-0.5 μg/mL). All isolates were fully or moderately sensitive to erythromycin (MIC 0.125-0.5 μg/mL). Most E. rhusiopathiae isolates proved resistant to fluoroquinolones (76.6% of isolates were re

BACKGROUND: Veterinary medicine students face distinctive challenges, such as exposure to animal suffering and academic pressures, which can adversely affect their quality of life (QoL), particularly regarding mental health. Although the role of adult attachment in healthcare professionals’ QoL is well-documented in research, the potential mediating role of stress in this association has yet to be fully elucidated. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized self-report questionnaires to assess 926 Italian veterinary medicine students on adult attachment styles, stress, mental health QoL, lif

Measuring purine metabolites in the serum and urine may help in the early diagnosis of urolith formation, the correction of allopurinol therapeutic dosages, and the evaluation of diet-related alterations. To properly monitor these endogenous compounds and assess their physiological concentration ranges in biological fluids, highly specific and accurate analytical approaches are required. Colorimetric assays are generally used for this purpose, although their cross-reactivity could lead to incorrect determinations. Given the importance of selectivity in detecting endogenous compounds, this stud

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ECSWT) is increasingly used to treat different types of musculoskeletal conditions in sport and companion animals. To explore the scientific basis for the treatment, we conducted a systematic review of the literature on ECSWT used in horses, dogs, and cats.
METHODS: Relevant articles published in 1980-2020 were identified from three major databases. Each article was assessed for risk of bias.
RESULTS: The review identified 27 relevant articles on the effects of ECSWT in horses, nine in dogs, but none in cats. Typically, ECSWT involved one to thre

Poxviruses as expression vectors are widely used in medical research for the development of recombinant vaccines and molecular therapies. Here we review recent accomplishments in vaccine research using recombinant modified vaccinia virus ankara (MVA). MVA is a highly attenuated vaccinia virus strain that originated from serial tissue culture passage in chicken embryo fibroblasts more than 40 years ago. Growth adaptation to avian host cells caused deletions and mutations in the viral genome affecting about 15% of the original genetic information. In consequence, MVA is replication-deficient in
