Adding Safety Rules to Surgeon-Authored Virtual Reality Training.

INTRODUCTION: The Toolkit for Illustration of Procedures in Surgery (TIPS) is an open source virtual reality (VR) laparoscopic simulation-based training environment with force feedback. The TIPS-author is a content creation interface that allows a surgeon educator (SE) to assemble new laparoscopic training modules. New technology enables safety rules to be specified by the SE, automatically tracks specified safety errors, and summarizes and communicates achievements and errors to the surgical trainee. METHODS: The TIPS-author combines and initializes building blocks of anatomy with their phys

Children's risk assessment in street crossing using virtual reality.

INTRODUCTION: Crossing streets represents a risky task for children where they have to assess both the probability and harm severity of being hit by a vehicle. To cross streets safely, children must perceive and interpret the traffic environment and scale their movements to the flow of traffic. Their ability to gather information about the surrounding environment through visual search strategies is essential in this process. This study aimed to explore children's street crossing behaviors and to identify successful risk-assessment strategies. METHOD: Virtual reality (VR) with built-in eye tra

[Virtual reality exposure therapy for treating addictions and craving].

Heroin addiction causes damage to physical and psychological health and can have serious social consequences. For people with addictive disorders, maintaining abstinence is a major difficulty. The stimuli that trigger cravings and urges are present in everyday life. For example, the presence of the substance, its smell, a stressful situation or a negative or positive emotion can trigger a strong urge for substance use. Craving can contribute to relapse episodes. Virtual reality exposure therapy (VET) may train people to cope differently when facing such triggers. This article presents a synthe

Simulated visual hallucinations in virtual reality enhance cognitive flexibility.

Historically, psychedelic drugs are known to modulate cognitive flexibility, a central aspect of cognition permitting adaptation to changing environmental demands. Despite proof suggesting phenomenological similarities between artificially-induced and actual psychedelic altered perception, experimental evidence is still lacking about whether the former is also able to modulate cognitive flexibility. To address this, we measure participants' cognitive flexibility through behavioral tasks after the exposure to virtual reality panoramic videos and their hallucinatory-like counterparts generated b

Body Ownership of Anatomically Implausible Hands in Virtual Reality.

Manipulating sensory and motor cues can cause an illusionary perception of ownership of a fake body part. Presumably, the illusion can work as long as the false body part's position and appearance are anatomically plausible. Here, we introduce an illusion that challenges past assumptions on body ownership. We used virtual reality to switch and mirror participants' views of their hands. When a participant moves their physical hand, they see the incongruent virtual hand moving. The result is an anatomically implausible configuration of the fake hand. Despite the hand switch, participants reporte

Immersive Virtual Reality Medical Simulation: Autonomous Trauma Training Simulator.

Background Medical and traumatic emergencies can be intimidating and stressful. This is especially true for early-career medical personnel.Training providers to respond effectively to medical emergencies before being confronted with a real scenario is limited by unnatural or high-cost training modalities that fail to realistically replicate the stress and gravity of real-world trauma management. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) may provide a unique training solution.  Methods We created a working group of 10 active duty or former military emergency medicine physicians and two technical experts.

End-user involvement in rehabilitation virtual reality implementation research.

PURPOSE: Despite increasing evidence for the effectiveness of off-the-shelf and rehabilitation-specific active video games (AVGs) and virtual reality (VR) systems for rehabilitation, clinical uptake remains poor. A better match between VR/AVG system capabilities and client/therapist needs, through improved end-user involvement (UI) in VR/AVG implementation research, may increase uptake of this technology. The purpose of this paper is to review four case examples from the authors' collective experience of including end users in VR/AVG research to identify common benefits, challenges and lessons

Introducing a Virtual Reality Experience in Anatomic Pathology Education.

OBJECTIVES: A proper examination of surgical specimens is fundamental in anatomic pathology (AP) education. However, the resources available to residents may not always be suitable for efficient skill acquisition. We propose a method to enhance AP education by introducing high-definition videos featuring methods for appropriate specimen handling, viewable on two-dimensional (2D) and stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) platforms. METHODS: A stereo camera system recorded the gross processing of commonly encountered specimens. Three edited videos, with instructional audio voiceovers, were experi

Virtual reality-based simulator for training in regional anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND: The safe performance of regional anaesthesia (RA) requires theoretical knowledge and good manual skills. Virtual reality (VR)-based simulators may offer trainees a safe environment to learn and practice different techniques. However, currently available VR simulators do not consider individual anatomy, which limits their use for realistic training. We have developed a VR-based simulator that can be used for individual anatomy and for different anatomical regions. METHODS: Individual data were obtained from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) w

Can virtual reality be used to investigate persecutory ideation?

The use of virtual reality permits individuals' reactions to standard controlled environments to be studied. It may therefore provide a means for understanding the interpretations of experience relevant to clinical disorders. The use of this technology for understanding persecutory ideation has not been investigated. A pilot study was undertaken to examine whether individuals have persecutory thoughts about virtual reality characters under controlled conditions and if there are factors that predict the occurrence of such thoughts.Twenty-four nonclinical participants entered a neutral virtual e

Visual-vestibular conflict induced by virtual reality in humans.

Conflicting inputs from visual and vestibular afferents produce motion sickness and postural instability. However, the relationship of visual and vestibular inputs to each other remains obscure. In this study, we examined the development of subjective sickness- and balance-related symptoms and objective equilibrium ataxia induced by visual-vestibular conflict (VVC) stimulation using virtual reality. The subjective symptoms evaluated by Graybiel's and Hamilton's criteria got gradually worse during the VVC. The objective postural instability was not observed during the VVC, but it occurred immed

HI-SIMv1.0--towards the virtual reality of hearing impairments.

The virtual reality of hearing impairments has obvious practical applications in areas such as audiology, speech therapy and hearing aid technology and serves as an informational tool for the family members of the hearing impaired. To simulate hearing impairment, a CD-ROM with filtered speech material accessible through a graphical user-interface was produced; the user-interface was created with standard multimedia tools. The CD-ROM, HI-SIMv1.0, intended as an interactive educational tool, offers a virtual experience of the effects of a selection of common types of hearing impairment. The opti

Embodiment in immersive virtual reality increases pupillary responses to a spider climbing a virtual arm.

Spider phobia is one of the most common types of specific phobias that can be effectively treated with exposure therapy. During exposure therapy, the patients experience encounters with spiders in a safe environment. Exposure sessions are traditionally performed face-to-face and modulate the intensity of the experience by varying the distance to the feared animal. More recently, immersive virtual reality (VR) has been introduced as an alternative treatment option that allows for novel ways of modulating the experienced intensity. In 23 participants (M age = 31.00), we tested whether embodiment
