Impact of Blur and Disparity Cues on Accommodation, Vergence, and Pupil Size in Response to Static Stimuli in Adolescents With and Without Concussion.

PURPOSE: To objectively investigate the effects of blur and disparity cues on accommodative response and microfluctuations (root mean square and low-frequency components), vergence, and pupillary responses to static targets in adolescents with persistent post-concussion symptoms. METHODS: Thirty-one adolescents with concussions and 32 controls completed the study. Refractive states, eye position (vergence), and pupil size were measured simultaneously using photorefraction (50 Hz) while participants viewed near stimuli for 15 seconds at nine distances ranging from 100 to 25 cm under three view

Binocular Summation for Reflexive Eye Movements: A Potential Diagnostic Tool for Stereodeficiencies.

PURPOSE: Stereoscopic vision, by detecting interocular correlations, enhances depth perception. Stereodeficiencies often emerge during the first months of life, and left untreated can lead to severe loss of visual acuity in one eye and/or strabismus. Early treatment results in much better outcomes, yet diagnostic tests for infants are cumbersome and not widely available. We asked whether reflexive eye movements, which in principle can be recorded even in infants, can be used to identify stereodeficiencies. METHODS: Reflexive ocular following eye movements induced by fast drifting noise stimul

Individual differences in binocular coordination are uncovered by directly comparing monocular and binocular reading conditions.

PURPOSE: We evaluated systematically binocular coordination during a reading task by comparing binocular and monocular reading, and considering the potential effects of individual heterophoria and eye dominance. METHODS: A total of 13 participants (aged 19-29 years, refractive errors -0.5 to 0.125 diopters [D]) read single sentences in a haploscope while eye movements were measured with an EyeLinkII eyetracker. RESULTS: When reading monocularly, saccade amplitudes increased by 0.04 degrees and first fixation durations became longer by approximately 10 ms. Furthermore, saccade disconjugacies

Spatial scale interactions in stereo sensitivity and the neural representation of binocular disparity.

How are binocular disparities encoded and represented in the human visual system? An 'encoding cube' diagram is introduced to visualise differences between competing models. To distinguish the models experimentally, the depth-increment-detection function (discriminating disparity d from d +/- delta d) was measured as a function of standing disparity (d) with spatially filtered random-dot stereograms of different centre spatial frequencies. Stereothresholds degraded more quickly as standing disparity was increased with stimuli defined by high rather than low centre spatial frequency. This is co

Multisensory constraints on awareness.

Given that multiple senses are often stimulated at the same time, perceptual awareness is most likely to take place in multisensory situations. However, theories of awareness are based on studies and models established for a single sense (mostly vision). Here, we consider the methodological and theoretical challenges raised by taking a multisensory perspective on perceptual awareness. First, we consider how well tasks designed to study unisensory awareness perform when used in multisensory settings, stressing that studies using binocular rivalry, bistable figure perception, continuous flash su

Effect of the background on the disparity-induced ramp vergence response in humans.

BACKGROUND: The use of complementary and/or alternative medicine to increase the efficacy and decrease the side effects of current cancer treatment is highly required. In this in-vivo study, we aimed to investigate the anti-tumor activity and probable side effects of a natural treatment, Cyrtopodion scabrum extract (CsE), in a model of tumor bearing mice. METHODS: We established 28 female CT26-tumor bearing balb/c-mice model. We divided them randomly into four groups (n=7): Negative control received distilled water (DW) and the three treatment groups were administered with 5-FU and two differ

Influence of ocular gaze and head position on 4 m heterophoria and fixation disparity.

Four-meter heterophoria and fixation disparity measurements were taken from a sample of 40 young adults in primary gaze, 33 degrees left and right lateral gaze, and in 2 head/gaze positions related to golf putting. Comparisons using analysis of variance were made between the mean values in each gaze position and between the test-retest range of values in each gaze position. Mean heterophoria was more eso (p less than 0.05) in the two head/gaze positions related to golf putting than in other gaze positions, whereas mean fixation disparity was more eso (p less than 0.05) in rightward than in pri

Abnormal Binocular Rivalry Dynamics in Amblyopia: A Potential Diagnostic Marker.

PURPOSE: Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by monocular deficits and interocular suppression. Binocular rivalry, where perception alternates between dissimilar images, is a powerful tool to probe this suppression. However, the dynamics of sustained binocular rivalry remain poorly characterized in amblyopia. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize these dynamics in individuals with amblyopia compared to visually-normal controls. METHODS: Eleven adults with amblyopia and eight controls continuously reported their perception during a binocular rivalry task through

Noise and adaptation in multistable perception: noise drives when to switch, adaptation determines percept choice.

We study the dynamics of perceptual switching in ambiguous visual scenes that admit more than two interpretations/percepts to gain insight into the dynamics of perceptual multistability and its underlying neural mechanisms. We focus on visual plaids that are tristable and we present both experimental and computational results. We develop a firing-rate model based on mutual inhibition and adaptation that involves stochastic dynamics of multiple-attractor systems. The model can account for the dynamic properties (transition probabilities, distributions of percept durations, etc.) observed in the

Pupil responses to near visual demand during human visual development.

Pupil responses of adults to near visual demands are well characterized but those of typically developing infants and children are not. This study determined the following pupil characteristics of infants, children and adults using a PowerRefractor (25 Hz): i) binocular and monocular responses to a cartoon movie that ramped between 80 and 33 cm (20 infants, 20 2-4-yr-olds and 20 adults participated) ii) binocular and monocular response threshold for 0.1 Hz sinusoidal stimuli of 0.25 D, 0.5 D or 0.75 D amplitude (33 infants and 8 adults participated) iii) steady-state stability of pupil respons

[Diplopia in monocular aphakia].

In monocular aphakia, diplopia results from disparities between the two retinal images in form, size, outline, luminous intensity and colour. If one wishes to give the best binocular vision possible to a monocular aphake, it is important to recognize the different factors which may give rise to diplopia.

Stratification of the Extent of Visual Impairment Identifies Sex-Specific Degenerative Changes in Retinal Structure and Function during Aging.

BACKGROUND: Initial manifestations of neurodegenerative ocular conditions, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma, often remain undetected in the early stages and can begin after the age of 50 years with the likelihood gradually increasing each year thereafter. This study aimed to explore variances in visual and retinal function and anatomy among C57BL/6J mice, aiming to pinpoint differences between biological age and sex factors that potentially lead to the onset of vision impairment. METHODS: A longitudinal study evaluated visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (

Impact on stereo-acuity of two presbyopia correction approaches: monovision and small aperture inlay.

Some of the different currently applied approaches that correct presbyopia may reduce stereovision. In this work, stereo-acuity was measured for two methods: (1) monovision and (2) small aperture inlay in one eye. When performing the experiment, a prototype of a binocular adaptive optics vision analyzer was employed. The system allowed simultaneous measurement and manipulation of the optics in both eyes of a subject. The apparatus incorporated two programmable spatial light modulators: one phase-only device using liquid crystal on silicon technology for wavefront manipulation and one intensity

Dynamic fusional vergence eye movements in congenital esotropia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether a selected group of 9 children with history of congenital esotropia is capable of producing vergence eye responses to fusional disparity stimuli. METHODS: Nine children with history of congenital esotropia and 5 age-matched children with normal binocular vision were examined. Using a full-field target, vergence responses to base out 3 prism diopters placed in front of both eyes were recorded. RESULTS: In five patients, the initial response was a saccade generated by the dominant eye, followed by a disconjugate movement of one or both eyes. In two patients with lo

Understanding 3D vision as a policy network.

It is often assumed that the brain builds 3D coordinate frames, in retinal coordinates (with binocular disparity giving the third dimension), head-centred, body-centred and world-centred coordinates. This paper questions that assumption and begins to sketch an alternative based on, essentially, a set of reflexes. A 'policy network' is a term used in reinforcement learning to describe the set of actions that are generated by an agent depending on its current state. This is an untypical starting point for describing 3D vision, but a policy network can serve as a useful representation both for th

AIM: To investigate the frequency and associated factors of accommodation and non-strabismic binocular vision dysfunction among medical university students. METHODS: Totally 158 student volunteers underwent routine vision examination in the optometry clinic of Guangxi Medical University. Their data were used to identify the different types of accommodation and non-strabismic binocular vision dysfunction and to determine their frequency. Correlation analysis and logistic regression were used to examine the factors associated with these abnormalities. RESULTS: The results showed that 36.71% of

Motion parallax enables depth processing for action in a visual form agnosic when binocular vision is unavailable.

Visual-form agnosic patient DF, who has severe difficulties in using visual information about size, shape and orientation for perceptual report, can nevertheless--under normal viewing conditions--use the same information to accurately guide her hand movements. However, her performance of prehension tasks requiring the analysis of visual depth is severely disrupted when binocular vision is prevented. We have suggested that this deterioration in visuomotor control is due to an inability to use pictorial depth cues to compensate for the removal of binocular vision. In the current study we investi

Fixational eye movements and binocular vision.

During attempted visual fixation, small involuntary eye movements-called fixational eye movements-continuously change of our gaze's position. Disagreement between the left and right eye positions during such motions can produce diplopia (double vision). Thus, the ability to properly coordinate the two eyes during gaze fixation is critical for stable perception. For the last 50 years, researchers have studied the binocular characteristics of fixational eye movements. Here we review classical and recent studies on the binocular coordination (i.e., degree of conjugacy) of each fixational eye move

Adaptation to prism-induced heterophoria in subjects with abnormal binocular vision or asthenopia.

In a previous study we investigated how normal subjects adapted to prism-induced heterophoria. In this study we have continued this work by investigating this phenomena in 15 patients with abnormal binocular vision and/or asthenopia. It was found that the majority of subjects lacked or had a deficient adaptation system to base-in and/or base-out prisms, but all except two subjects examined adapted normally to vertical prism. These results suggest that it may be possible to treat the horizontal adaptation system independently from the vertical one. Prism vergences, heterophoria measurements, an

Neither the number of feature dimensions nor their task relevance necessarily affect interocular grouping in binocular rivalry.

When one eye views half of stimulus A and half of stimulus B, and the other eye views the respective other halves, perception fluctuates. Among percepts reflecting monocular inputs (indicating typical binocular rivalry), percepts of undivided stimuli A and B occur. They indicate the grouping of parts of inputs from both eyes together, a process called "interocular grouping". Our study investigated if, similar to binocular rivalry, this process is affected by attentional modulation stemming from manipulating the task relevance of the stimulus features driving it. We used stimuli in which form (
