INTRODUCTION: Vision impairment caused by retinal diseases stands out as one of the significant sources of irreversible blindness, highlighting the importance of developing robust automated screening tools to detect eye diseases at an early stage. Despite the promising results of recent deep learning approaches to the automatic classification of retinal images, most existing solutions focus on image-based representations and do not consider the importance of vascular topology. To overcome the limitations, this study proposes VG-RETFound - a hybrid framework based on a retinal foundation model

Distinguishing Active from Inactive Tuberculosis (TB) on Chest X-rays presents a clinical challenge due to overlapping radiological signs. This study introduces Vision Mamba CGSM, a deep learning framework integrating a State Space Model (SSM) backbone with a Context-Guided Slot Mixing (CGSM) module. The SSM captures global anatomical context, while the CGSM module isolates subtle pathological features by applying localized spatial attention. We validated the model using a hierarchical diagnostic scheme covering Normal, Pneumonia, Active TB, and Inactive TB. Experimental evaluations demonstrat

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of new cases of blindness and is pandemic among Aboriginal people around the world. To reduce health inequities, accessible vision screening among these high-risk populations is essential. To assess cardio-metabolic co-morbidities associated with type 2 diabetes and the use of a portable fundus camera as a novel approach for convenient, earlier and more accessible vision screening for Aboriginal peoples living with type 2 diabetes in northern and remote Canadian communities. This quantitative pilot study screened participants diagnosed with type 2

BACKGROUND: Myopia is a major health issue around the world. Myopia in children has increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic in China, but reports are scarce on the prevalence of myopia following the pandemic. This study collected vision screening data of school children in China for five consecutive years to observe the changes in myopia after the pandemic and compare the observed prevalence of myopia before and after the pandemic.
METHODS: A school-based vision screening study used stratified samplings to collect the vision screening data in school children aged 6-13 from 45 pri

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a vascular proliferative disorder of preterm infants, with increased disease severity and incidence occurring with lower gestational age and birth weight. An alternate approach to ROP screening with wide-field digital retinal imaging helps with the early detection of ROP, especially during the pandemic.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the current vision screening criteria regarding amblyopia and refractive errors, with emphasis on screening limits and retesting, in Region Västra Götaland (VGR), Sweden. Visual acuity (VA) screening is performed by nurses at primary healthcare centres (PHCs) in 4-year-old children and at school in 6- or 7-year-old children. Children with VA <0.65 (>0.19 logMAR) at either eye are referred. If VA is 0.65 in one or both eyes, a retest is performed by nurses at PHCs and schools, the children are then referred if VA is <0.8 (>0.10 logMAR).
METHODS: We included all children ag

In this cross-sectional study, the vision-screening process is described for 8417 children aged 3 to 5 seen for health supervision in a group of 102 pediatric practices in 23 states and Puerto Rico. Three hundred forty children who failed screening (63% of those who failed) were followed up 2 months after initial screening. The sample was 52% male, 86% white, 9% black, 3% Hispanic, and 1% Asian. Vision screening was attempted on 66% of children overall. Pediatricians' reasons for not screening were "not routine" (44%), "too young" (40%), and "screening done previously" (17%). Younger children

INTRODUCTION: Amblyopia is one of the most common causes of preventable permanent visual impairment in childhood; its prevention requires early detection and targeted treatment. Children living in socioeconomically disadvantaged settlements have markedly limited access to ophthalmic care and are therefore at increased risk.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to present the outcomes achieved during the first four years (2020-2023) of the pediatric ophthalmology screening program of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta in the detection, prevention, and treatment of amblyopia,

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the normal daily routine activities of children were restricted as a result of the need to stay indoors. Consequently, children were forced to attend online classes provided by their educational institutions at their homes. Due to the subsequent increased screen exposure, children have started complaining of blurred vision, headache, and symptoms related to computer vision syndrome (CVS), predisposing them to myopia.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of CVS symptoms, such as blurring of vision, headache, and watery eyes in children, due

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive vision screening programmes for children are an important part of public health strategy, but do not exist in many countries, including Tonga. This project set out to assess: (1) the functional vision of children attending primary schools in Tonga and (2) how a new recognition acuity test (The Auckland Optotypes displayed on a tablet computer) compares to use of a standardised eye chart in this setting.
METHODS: Children from three Tongan primary schools were invited to participate. Acuity testing was conducted using a standardised recognition acuity chart (Lea symbo
