Deviations in cortex sulcation associated with visual hallucinations in schizophrenia.

Hallucinations, and auditory hallucinations (AH) in particular, constitute the most typical and disabling schizophrenia symptoms. Although visual hallucinations (VH) have been largely neglected in psychiatric disorders, a recent review reported a 27% mean prevalence of VH in schizophrenia patients. The pathophysiology underlying VH in schizophrenia remains elusive. Several schizophrenia studies reported a significant effect of age on VH; therefore, we tested the hypothesis that the neurodevelopmental model of schizophrenia may explain VH occurrence. We analyzed cortex sulcation, a marker of br

Spontaneous pattern formation and pinning in the primary visual cortex.

A mean field approach to the population activity of cortical neurons is used to provide a possible mechanism for the generation of geometric visual hallucinations. As was previously investigated, competition between short-range excitation and longer-range inhibition in the connectivity profile of neurons provides the difference of length scales necessary for spontaneous symmetry breaking in the form of the Turing mechanism to generate patterns of activity. This approach is expanded in order to be able to incorporate additional details of the cortical circuitry, namely that neurons are also wea

Electroencephalographic evidence of sensory gating in the occipital visual cortex.

Sensory gating refers to the suppression of the neuronal response to a repeating stimulus and is considered a protection mechanism in the brain. In this study, we assessed gating of the mid-latency components of the visual evoked potentials (N75, P100, N150) in 11 healthy individuals using a paired-flash paradigm. A significant decrease of P100 and N150 amplitudes was shown; additionally, a significant increase in the latency of N75 and P100 for the second stimulus of the pair compared with the first one was also observed. Absolute power of the stimulus 2 signal at theta frequency was signific

The antidepressant fluoxetine restores plasticity in the adult visual cortex.

We investigated whether fluoxetine, a widely prescribed medication for treatment of depression, restores neuronal plasticity in the adult visual system of the rat. We found that chronic administration of fluoxetine reinstates ocular dominance plasticity in adulthood and promotes the recovery of visual functions in adult amblyopic animals, as tested electrophysiologically and behaviorally. These effects were accompanied by reduced intracortical inhibition and increased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the visual cortex. Cortical administration of diazepam prevented the effects

Auditory responses in the visual cortex of neonatally enucleated rats.

A number of studies on humans and animals have demonstrated better auditory abilities in blind with respect to sighted subjects and have tried to define the mechanisms through which this compensation occurs. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to examine the participation of primary visual cortex (V1) to auditory processing in early enucleated rats. Here we show, using gaussian noise bursts, that about a third of the cells in V1 responded to auditory stimulation in blind rats and most of these (78%) had ON-type responses and low spontaneous activity. Moreover, they were distributed th

A direct demonstration of functional specialization in human visual cortex.

We have used positron emission tomography (PET), which measures regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), to demonstrate directly the specialization of function in the normal human visual cortex. A novel technique, statistical parametric mapping, was used to detect foci of significant change in cerebral blood flow within the prestriate cortex, in order to localize those parts involved in the perception of color and visual motion. For color, we stimulated the subjects with a multicolored abstract display containing no recognizable objects (Land color Mondrian) and contrasted the resulting blood flow

Retinotopic organization of striate and extrastriate visual cortex in the mouse.

Detailed retinotopic maps of primary visual cortex (area 17) and the extrastriate visual regions surrounding it (areas 18a and 18b) have been constructed for the C57BL/6J mouse using standard electrophysiological mapping techniques. Primary visual cortex (area 17), as defined cytoarchitectonically, contains one complete representation of the contralateral visual field, termed V1, in which azimuth and elevation lines are approximately orthogonal. The upper visual field is represented caudally and the nasal field laterally. Binocular cells are encountered in the cortical representation of the na

Thalamic afferents to the visual cortex in congenitally anophthalmic mice.

Retrograde cell labelling with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) has been used to study the thalamic afferents to the primary visual cortex (area 17) in mutant H1-ZRDCT-An ('eyeless') mice, in which the eyes are missing throughout development. Injections of HRP that were localised to a subregion of area 17, resulted in the labelling of a group of neurons in the ipsilateral dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, showing the existence of a point-to-point connectivity. Many labelled cells were also found in other posterior thalamic nuclei especially in the lateral posterior nucleus which in normal animals

Psilocybin Prolongs the Neurovascular Coupling Response in Mouse Visual Cortex.

Psilocybin has profound therapeutic potential for various mental health disorders, but its mechanisms of action are unknown. Functional MRI studies have reported the effects of psilocybin on brain activity and connectivity; however, these measurements rely on neurovascular coupling to infer neural activity changes and assume that blood flow responses to neural activity are not altered by psilocybin. Using two-photon excited fluorescence imaging in the visual cortex of awake mice to simultaneously measure neural activity and capillary blood flow dynamics, we found that psilocybin administration

Functional bipartite invariance in mouse primary visual cortex receptive fields.

Sensory systems support generalization by representing features that persist under input variation; however, identifying the neuronal basis of these invariances remains difficult due to high-dimensional and nonlinear neural computations. Here we leverage the inception loop paradigm, iterating between large-scale recordings, predictive models and in silico experiments with in vivo verification, to characterize neuronal invariances in mouse primary visual cortex (V1). We synthesize varied exciting inputs (VEIs), dissimilar images that drive target neurons. These VEIs revealed a new bipartite inv

De novo fast motion computation in the primate visual cortex.

Objects move through space and time, generating sequential visuotopic activations in all sighted animals, leading to velocity perception defined by direction and speed. The primary visual cortex (V1) only encodes directionality at low speed, yet we effortlessly perceive velocities ranging from 0.25°/s to 500°/s. To resolve this paradox, we recorded neuronal responses to moving dots, gratings, and movies across the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), V1, middle temporal (MT) area, and medial superior temporal (MST) area of the macaque motion pathway. Regardless of cell type and motion stimuli, V1

Tuning metaplasticity in the adult visual cortex using flickering light.

Synaptic connections in the brain are refined by sensory experience during an early postnatal critical period, but by adulthood synaptic connectivity is resistant to further changes. A consequence of lost plasticity is limited recovery from brain injury, disease, and adverse sensory experience. Thus, there is great interest in treatments that can promote synaptic modifications in the adult brain. In a wide variety of contexts, it has been established that the qualities of synaptic plasticity are not fixed but rather vary depending on the recent history of cellular or synaptic activity 1 . Circuit dynamics of binocular conflict in mouse primary visual cortex.

Binocular vision requires that the brain integrate input from both eyes to form a unified percept. Small interocular differences support depth perception (stereopsis), while larger disparities can cause diplopia or binocular rivalry. The neural mechanisms by which early visual circuits process concordant versus conflicting binocular signals remain incompletely understood. Here, we used visually evoked potentials (VEPs), unit recordings, and 2-photon calcium imaging in the binocular region of mouse primary visual cortex (bV1) to examine how distinct forms of binocular disparity engage local cir

Graspable foods and tools elicit similar responses in visual cortex.

Extrastriatal visual cortex is known to exhibit distinct response profiles to complex stimuli of varying ecological importance (e.g., faces, scenes, and tools). The dominant interpretation of these effects is that they reflect activation of distinct "category-selective" brain regions specialized to represent these and other stimulus categories. We sought to explore an alternative perspective: that the response to these stimuli is determined less by whether they form distinct categories, and more by their relevance to different forms of natural behavior. In this regard, food is an interesting t

Graspable foods and tools elicit similar responses in visual cortex.

The extrastriatal visual cortex is known to exhibit distinct response profiles to complex stimuli of varying ecological importance (e.g. faces, scenes, and tools). Although food is primarily distinguished from other objects by its edibility, not its appearance, recent evidence suggests that there is also food selectivity in human visual cortex. Food is also associated with a common behavior, eating, and food consumption typically also involves the manipulation of food, often with hands. In this context, food items share many properties with tools: they are graspable objects that we manipulate

Behavioral origin of sound-evoked activity in mouse visual cortex.

Sensory cortices can be affected by stimuli of multiple modalities and are thus increasingly thought to be multisensory. For instance, primary visual cortex (V1) is influenced not only by images but also by sounds. Here we show that the activity evoked by sounds in V1, measured with Neuropixels probes, is stereotyped across neurons and even across mice. It is independent of projections from auditory cortex and resembles activity evoked in the hippocampal formation, which receives little direct auditory input. Its low-dimensional nature starkly contrasts the high-dimensional code that V1 uses t

A Probabilistic Functional Atlas of Human Occipito-Temporal Visual Cortex.

Human visual cortex contains many retinotopic and category-specific regions. These brain regions have been the focus of a large body of functional magnetic resonance imaging research, significantly expanding our understanding of visual processing. As studying these regions requires accurate localization of their cortical location, researchers perform functional localizer scans to identify these regions in each individual. However, it is not always possible to conduct these localizer scans. Here, we developed and validated a functional region of interest (ROI) atlas of early visual and category

NMDAR-Dependent Emergence of Behavioral Representation in Primary Visual Cortex.

Although neocortical sensory areas are generally thought to faithfully represent external stimuli, cortical networks exhibit considerable functional plasticity, allowing them to modify their output to reflect ongoing behavioral demands. We apply longitudinal 2-photon imaging of activity in the primary visual cortex (V1) of mice learning a conditioned eyeblink task to investigate the dynamic representations of task-relevant information. We find that, although all V1 neurons robustly and stably encode visual input, pyramidal cells and parvalbumin-expressing interneurons exhibit experience-depend

Classification of Visual Cortex Plasticity Phenotypes following Treatment for Amblyopia.

Monocular deprivation (MD) during the critical period (CP) has enduring effects on visual acuity and the functioning of the visual cortex (V1). This experience-dependent plasticity has become a model for studying the mechanisms, especially glutamatergic and GABAergic receptors, that regulate amblyopia. Less is known, however, about treatment-induced changes to those receptors and if those changes differentiate treatments that support the recovery of acuity versus persistent acuity deficits. Here, we use an animal model to explore the effects of 3 visual treatments started during the CP (n = 24
