Stereotactic radiosurgery for postgeniculate visual pathway arteriovenous malformations.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) that are located within the postgeniculate optic radiations or striate cortex are difficult to resect without creating postoperative visual defects. To reduce the risk of an AVM hemorrhage and to enhance the possibility of preserving visual function, the authors performed stereotactic radiosurgery in 34 patients with newly diagnosed or residual AVMs of the visual pathways. The mean AVM volume was 4.7 ml, and the average radiation dose to the AVM margin was 21 Gy. The median follow up was 47 months (range 16-83 months). Two (6%) of 34 patients had documented n

Visual pathway hemorrhage associated with alcohol-induced coagulopathy.

Hemorrhage confined to the optic pathways is rare. We describe a patient with diffuse hemorrhage of the intracranial optic nerves, optic chiasm, and optic tracts, attributed to alcohol-induced coagulopathy. The hemorrhage resolved completely as the patient's vision improved, and subsequent neuroimaging studies showed atrophy of the affected structures.

Normal visual pathway routing in dissociated vertical deviation.

Flash visually evoked cortical potentials have been recorded in three groups of age- and sex-matched subjects; one comprised of subjects with dissociated vertical deviation, one comprised of subjects with oculocutaneous albinism and one group of controls. The latency of the major positive (P2) component did not show statistically significant contralateral lateralization on monocular stimulation in either the dissociated vertical deviation group or the control group. Contralateral lateralization was found in the albino group at a statistically significant level (P less than 0.01). It is conclud

An aberrant crossed visual corticotectal pathway in albino rats.

This study investigates the dynamic nature of the developing corticotectal pathway arising in the visual cortex. Special attention is given to the interaction occurring between the corticotectal pathways of each side of the brain and between corticotectal and retinotectal terminations. Normally the visual cortex of rats projects only to the ipsilateral superior colliculus. If one visual cortex is removed at birth, the remaining visual cortex subsequently shows a bilateral projection to the superior colliculus. The aberrant corticotectal pathway is heavier if the cortical ablation is accompanie

The central release of acetylcholine during stimulation of the visual pathway.

1. In rabbits anaesthetized with Dial ACh has been collected from the surface of the cerebral cortex during stimulation of the visual pathways.2. The spontaneous release of ACh from the visual and non-visual areas of the cortex was found to be similar.3. Stimulation of the retinae by diffuse light produced a large increase in ACh release from the primary visual receiving areas (4.3 times the spontaneous release) and a smaller increase (1.9 times the spontaneous release) from other parts of the cortex.4. Direct unilateral electrical stimulation of the lateral geniculate body evoked a large incr

Visual Evoked Potentials as a Biomarker for Visual Hallucination Pathway Integrity in Late-Stage Alzheimer's Disease.

ObjectiveAlzheimer's disease (AD) often presents visual hallucinations (VH) in late stages. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are noninvasive electrophysiological measures that reflect the functional integrity of the visual conduction pathway. This study uses visual evoked potentials (VEP) to assess visual pathway dysfunction and evaluates VEP as a biomarker for disease progression.MethodsA retrospective study of 112 AD patients (2016-2024) was conducted, categorizing individuals into VH and non-VH groups based on the presence of visual hallucinations. VEP testing assessed P100 latency and ampli

The role of visually evoked potentials in the management of hemispheric arachnoid cyst compressing the posterior visual pathways.

We report a case of an occipital arachnoid cyst in an infant, managed on the basis of changes in visually evoked potentials (VEPs). A significant asymmetry of VEP responses prompted neurosurgical intervention, which improved visual behavior and electrical response to both pattern and flash stimuli.

Visual pathway abnormalities Wilson's disease: an electrophysiological study using electroretinography and visual evoked potentials.

The pathogenesis of the pattern reversal visual evoked potential (PRVEP) abnormalities in patients with Wilson's disease (WD) has not been investigated earlier. Since electroretinography (ERG) assesses the functional integrity of the retina, it was used along with PRVEP to localize the abnormalities in PRVEP in Wilson's patients. Ten newly diagnosed Wilson's disease patients underwent PRVEP and flash ERG soon after the diagnosis was established. The PRVEP latencies were prolonged in comparison with the controls (P<0.001). Photopic and scotopic A waves and oscillatory potentials were prolonged

[Value of visual evoked potentials (VEP) in compression of the anterior visual pathway, especially in the area of the chiasm].

We investigated 86 patients by pattern half-field stimulation presenting clinically with temporal field-defects or with a mass causing compression of the visual pathways found by C.T.-scanning. Pattern half-field stimulation proved to be a very sensitive method for detecting a compression of the anterior visual pathways. In 65 cases the results of perimetry and VEP were congruent, 6 times the evoked potential was pathologic the perimetry showing no abnormalities, only 1 false negative VEP was observed. Thus we stress the importance of an investigation by VEP including half-field stimulation in

Nonlinear characteristics of visual evoked potential in glaucoma patients and their correlation with the visual responses on magnocellular and parvocellular pathways.

Purpose was to investigate the linear and nonlinear characteristics of VEPs, and their correlation with the visual parvocellular and magnocellular systems. The VEPs were elicited by pseudorandom luminance modulated stimulation from patients with primary open angle glaucoma and compared with normal subjects. VEPs were recorded from 26 eyes with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and 10 eyes of age-matched normal volunteers. To acquire the VEPs, the eye was stimulated with a pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) stimulus of 40 sec duration. The first (linear) and second-order (nonlinear) binary ke

Invariant visual object and face learning in the ventral cortical visual pathway: A biologically plausible model.

How transform-invariant visual representations of objects and faces are learned in the ventral visual cortical pathway is a massive computational problem. Here we describe key advances towards a biologically plausible four-layer network that performs these computations from the primary visual cortex to the inferior temporal visual cortex. The architecture is a four-layer competitive network with layer-to-layer convergence using a short-term memory trace local synaptic learning rule to associate transforming inputs from an object during natural viewing. The key advances towards biological plaus

Multi-Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Visual White Matter Pathways in Patients With Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is a disorder that involves visual field loss caused by retinal ganglion cell damage. Previous diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) studies have demonstrated that retinal ganglion cell damage affects tissues in the optic tract (OT) and optic radiation (OR). However, because previous studies have used a simple diffusion tensor model to analyze dMRI data, the microstructural interpretation of white matter tissue changes remains uncertain. In this study, we used a multi-contrast MRI approach to further clarify the type of microstructural damage that occurs in patients wit

Reduction of Interhemispheric Functional Connectivity in Sensorimotor and Visual Information Processing Pathways in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated interhemispheric functional connectivity alterations in schizophrenia. However, the relationship between these alterations and the disease state of schizophrenia is largely unknown. Therefore, we aimed to investigate this relationship using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) method. METHODS: This study enrolled 36 schizophrenia patients with complete remission, 58 schizophrenia patients with incomplete remission and 55 healthy controls. The VMHC was calculated based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data. Difference

Bilateral neuroinflammatory processes in visual pathways induced by unilateral ocular hypertension in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in the world. The major risk factor is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) leading to progressive retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death from the optic nerve (ON) to visual pathways in the brain. Glaucoma has been reported to share mechanisms with neurodegenerative disorders. We therefore hypothesize that neuroinflammatory mechanisms in central visual pathways may contribute to the spread of glaucoma disease. The aim of the present study was to analyze the neuroinflammation processes that occur from the pathological retina

Parallel feedback pathways in visual cortex of cats revealed through a modified rabies virus.

The visual cortex of cats is highly evolved. Analogously to the brains of primates, large numbers of visual areas are arranged hierarchically and can be parsed into separate dorsal and ventral streams for object recognition and visuospatial representation. Within early primate visual areas, V1 and V2, and to a lesser extent V3, the two streams are relatively segregated and relayed in parallel to higher order cortex, although there is some evidence suggesting an alignment of V2 and V3 to one stream over the other. For cats, there is no evidence of anatomical segregation in areas 18 and 19, the

Increased levels of 5-HT1A receptor binding in ventral visual pathways in Parkinson's disease.

Visual hallucinations are common in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). The pathophysiology of visual hallucinations may involve enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission. The atypical antipsychotics clozapine and quetiapine, which have affinity for 5-HT(2A) and 5-HT(1A) receptors, are effective against visual hallucinations in PD. 5-HT(2A) receptors are increased in ventral visual pathways in PD patients with visual hallucinations, and we hypothesized that 5-HT(1A) receptors were also involved in visual hallucinations in PD. Autoradiographic binding using [(3) H]-WAY-100,635 and NAN-190 was perf

A possible selective impairment of magnocellular function in compression of the anterior visual pathways.

Two parallel visual systems, the magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) pathways, originate from different types of retinal ganglion cells, and are known to be segregated in different portions of the pregeniculate visual pathways. Their relative contribution to two main cortical streams, dorsal and ventral, is still under discussion, but it is reasonable to suppose that selective damage to the M or P subcortical system might interfere with specific aspects of processing within one or the other cortical system. Using two different apparent-motion tasks, we compared the performance of patients
