INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Gait Speed (GS), a valid and reliable indicator of function and health in multiple populations, has not been explored in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The purpose of this study was to characterize GS and gait speed reserves (GSR), and explore associations with strength and fatigability in SMA and healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: Data were collected from ambulatory individuals with SMA (n = 14) and controls (HC) (n = 10). Using custom-engineered instrumented insoles, stride velocity (SV) was collected during the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and 10-m walk/run (10MWR). Three GS

Accurate assessment of vital signs is important for reducing mortality. The aim of this study was to validate the effectiveness and safety of noncontact vital sign sensors. Interference tests were conducted with a noncontact vital sign sensor and medical devices. Inpatients' heart and respiratory rates were monitored via this sensor, and the measurements of this sensor were compared with those of reference medical equipment. Noncontact vital sign sensors and medical devices did not interfere with each other. A total of 21 patients (10 adults and 11 children, including 1 baby) were analysed. Fo

OBJECTIVES: To identify patterns in inflammatory marker and vital sign responses in adult with suspected bloodstream infection (BSI) and define expected trends in normal recovery.
METHODS: We included patients ≥16 y from Oxford University Hospitals with a blood culture taken between 1-January-2016 and 28-June-2021. We used linear and latent class mixed models to estimate trajectories in C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood count, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature and identify CRP response subgroups. Centile charts for expected CRP responses were constructed via the lambda-mu-sigma

Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) provide quantitative assessments of patients' experiences with their skin diseases. PROs are usually much more comprehensive than what can be gleaned from a brief clinical history and more informative than what dermatologists can gather on clinical examination. Correlations between PROs and clinician assessments (e.g., investigator global assessment, PASI) are poor to moderate at best, and therefore data from each source are not redundant and can complement one another. PROs should serve as skin vital signs in dermatology. PROs can offer snapshots of the intens

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between the physical activity vital sign (PAVS) and markers of cardiometabolic disease.
DESIGN: Patients were assessed through the PAVS, a validated tool self-reporting the frequency and duration of physical activity. Patients were categorized into 3 groups: inactive (0 minutes per week), underactive (1-149 minutes per week), and active (>150 minutes per week). Associations were tested between the PAVS and the cardiometabolic disease biomarkers of body mass index, hemoglobin A1c (A1c), blood pressure, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) using one-way anal

The purpose of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of the Exercise Vital Sign (EVS) questionnaire in an ethnically diverse sample. Participants (N = 39) were asked to wear an accelerometer at the hip for at least 7 days and to complete the EVS at the beginning (T1) and end (T2) of the wear period. The EVS questionnaire validity was determined against accelerometry, and bias was calculated as the mean difference between measures. The sensitivity and specificity of the EVS questionnaire were also evaluated. The reliability of the questionnaire was calculated using intraclass

CONTEXT: The birth process and the moments thereafter are a crucial time for newborns as they adapt to extra uterine life. The adaptive process begins immediately and can take a number of days to complete. The process involves initiating and maintaining respirations, thermoregulation, and the change from foetal circulation to newborn circulation. The majority of newborns successfully adapt to extra uterine life, some experience difficulty. Early warning tools may assist clinicians identify early signs of failure to adapt and/or deterioration but these are dependent on 'Normal' vital sign refer

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the diagnostic yield of continuous monitoring with video electroencephalography (cVEEG) for pediatric inpatients with paroxysmal vital sign changes (PVSCs), and to identify risk factors for the PVSCs being seizures, based on clinical information available before cVEEG initiation. We hypothesized that PVSCs without nonautonomic symptoms (NAS) were unlikely to be seizures, and also that patients' clinical characteristics would alter the risk of recording seizures.
METHODS: We performed a single-center chart review of 324 cVEEG studies that were obtained for diff

IMPORTANCE: Continuous postoperative monitoring on general nursing units detects vital sign abnormalities that are missed with conventional intermittent monitoring. Early recognition may prompt interventions to limit potentially harmful blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation perturbations.
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that continuous unblinded monitoring of vital signs would decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation abnormalities compared with intermittent monitoring in patients recovering from noncardiac surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Low health literacy is prevalent in both healthy and clinical populations, and plays a critical role in health behaviors and outcomes. The Newest Vital Sign (NVS) is a performance-based screening measure of health literacy that assesses numeracy, prose literacy, and document literacy. However, the underlying factor structure of the NVS is not well established and questions persist regarding optimal scoring methods, which limits our understanding of this widely-used measure. The current study therefore aimed to confirm the factor structure of the NVS in separate samples of healthy,

BACKGROUND: In clinical settings, counseling patients on physical activity starts by assessing patients' current physical activity levels. Self-report measures of PA are generally easy to administer; however, they may be too long to be convenient and are known to correlate poorly with objective measures of physical activity.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the concurrent validity of a self-report three-question physical activity vital sign with objective Fitbit step counts and the distance walked during a 6-min walk test.
METHODS: This pilot study tested a best practice advisory embedded in the Epic el

Hand grip strength (HGS) serves as a fundamental metric in assessing muscle function and overall physical capability and is particularly relevant to the ageing population. HGS holds an important connection to the concept of sarcopenia, which encompasses the age-related decline in muscle mass, strength, and function. It has also been reported to indicate the health of an individual. We reviewed the interplay between HGS and various health parameters, including morbidity and mortality, by carrying out a literature search on PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar between 10 and 30 August 2023, to iden

OBJECTIVE: During the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and self-isolation called for innovative, readily implementable, and effective short-term health solutions. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of self-assessment of vital signs and symptoms with electronic transmission of results, by self-isolating individuals with positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. The secondary objective was to describe the association between the presence of abnormal vital signs and severe symptoms as well as their evolution over time.
METHOD: Participants with positive

INTRODUCTION: Millions of patients undergo major abdominal surgery worldwide each year, and the post-operative phase carries a high risk of respiratory and circulatory complications. Standard ward observation of patients includes vital sign registration at regular intervals. Patients may deteriorate between measurements, and this may be detected by continuous monitoring. The aim of this study was to compare the number of micro events detected by continuous monitoring to those documented by the widely used standardized Early Warning Score (EWS).
METHODS: Fifty patients were continuously monito

BACKGROUND: Traumatic shock cannot be diagnosed by a single physiological measurement and a number of vital sign based combined shock scores (CSS) have been proposed to identify and triage trauma patients with shock. This audit uses data from a prospectively entered electronic trauma registry to compare the ability of these CSS to predict in-hospital mortality, need for surgery, need for blood transfusion and ICU admission.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data used in the study was obtained from the Hybrid Electronic Medical Record (HEMR) in Pietermaritzburg from January 2012-September 2015. The c

Pulsoximeters are widely used in the medical care of preclinical patients to evaluate the cardiorespiratory status and monitor basic vital signs, such as pulse rate (PR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2). In many preclinical situations, air transport of the patient by helicopter is necessary. Conventional pulse oximeters, mostly used on the patient's finger, are prone to motion artifacts during transportation. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether simulated helicopter vibration has an impact on the photoplethysmogram (PPG) derived from an in-ear sensor at the external ear canal and whethe

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage resulting from trauma is a leading cause of potentially survivable death. Current monitoring devices that offer measures of traditional vital signs can delay patient management during the early compensatory phases of treatment, creating a capability gap for advanced decision support in the austere prehospital setting. In this investigation, we tested the hypothesis that arterial waveform feature analysis outperforms standard vital signs (SVSs) for early detection of progressive reductions in central blood volume and prediction of hemodynamic decompensation.
