Acute and chronic morphine administration in swine.

Functional responses to acute and chronic morphine administration in domestic swine were examined and correlated with pharmacokinetic profiles. Acute effects of morphine sulfate were monitored in pigs for 24 h and the chronic actions of morphine alkaloid were monitored for 21 days. Serum morphine levels, nociception, locomotor activity, respiratory rate, body temperature, and body weight were monitored during all studies. To assess nociception in a large laboratory animal, a portable thermal stimulating device was constructed. Morphine sulfate administered IV and SC had a half-life of approxim

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of a Chiari I-like malformation in an African lion (Panthera leo).

A 13-mo-old intact male African lion (Panthera leo) presented with a 3-mo history of lethargy, ventral flexion of the neck, abnormal vocalization, and ataxia. Hemogram and serum biochemistries were within normal limits except for the presence of hypokalemia (2.7 mEq/L) and hypochloridemia (108 mEq/L). When no improvement was noted with oral potassium gluconate supplementation, a computed tomography scan of the brain and skull was performed, and no abnormalities were noted. However, magnetic resonance imaging detected occipital bone thickening, crowding of the caudal cranial fossa with cerebell

Local neurotoxins for prevention of laryngeal synkinesis after recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.

OBJECTIVES: Persistent vocal fold motion impairment after recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is not characteristically due to absent reinnervation, but often results from spontaneous aberrant reinnervation (synkinesis). We administered local neurotoxins to selected laryngeal muscles after RLN injury to determine whether aberrant reinnervation could be selectively inhibited. METHODS: Unilateral RLN transection was performed in 24 male rats. Three weeks later, the denervated laryngeal adductor complex was injected with phenol, high- or low-dose vincristine sulfate (VNC), or saline solution.

Alpha-synuclein overexpression reduces neural activity within a basal ganglia vocal nucleus in a zebra finch model.

Changes in vocal pitch, loudness, and timing are prevalent in Parkinson's Disease (PD) and a target for early intervention and treatment. The neural mechanisms underlying these impairments are not understood, motivating work in animal models. The adult male zebra finch songbird is uniquely poised for these studies given vocally-dedicated brain nuclei and a quantifiable output (birdsong). Our prior publication revealed that injection of an adeno-associated virus (AAV5) expressing the human (h) alpha-synuclein (hSNCA, a-syn) gene into basal ganglia vocal nucleus Area X results in elevated insolu

[The key problems of diagnosis and treatment of vocal cord paralysis].

Vocal cord paralysis is a common condition that significantly impairs laryngeal function and can even be life-threatening. Over nearly a century, researchers have conducted extensive animal and clinical studies to achieve accurate diagnosis and restore laryngeal function, making significant progress. Approaches have evolved from mechanically narrowing the glottis to restore phonation, to enlarging the glottis to relieve breathing difficulties, and ultimately to the development of surgical techniques aimed at restoring vocal cord mobility, significantly advancing the field. The publication of e

Autologous elastic cartilage for laryngoplasty: histologic evaluation in a rabbit model.

A wide range of materials have been used to achieve medialization of the paralyzed vocal fold. Recently, medialization techniques using autologous cartilage have been described, but little information is available on cartilage integration and viability in this situation. In this prospective, experimental, controlled study, right vocal fold paralysis was surgically induced in 30 New Zealand rabbits. An autologous auricular cartilage transplant was inserted in the vocal fold in 15 animals. In the control group, only the laryngeal nerve was sectioned. Each group was divided into two groups with f

Neuroligin-3-deficient mice: model of a monogenic heritable form of autism with an olfactory deficit.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a frequent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by variable clinical severity. Core symptoms are qualitatively impaired communication and social behavior, highly restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Although recent work on genetic mutations in ASD has shed light on the pathophysiology of the disease, classifying it essentially as a synaptopathy, no treatments are available to date. To develop and test novel ASD treatment approaches, validated and informative animal models are required. Of particular interest, in this context are loss-of-function

Effect of Morphology and Spatial Distribution of Males on Vocal Identity in a Non-Learning African Wood Dove.

Individual vocal signatures are widespread across animal taxa, yet the processes underlying their emergence remain poorly understood. Vocal individuality may arise incidentally from morphological variation or be shaped by social environments in which reliable recognition reduces interaction costs. Here, we investigated these non-exclusive alternatives in the Emerald-spotted Wood Dove (Turtur chalcospilos), a territorial, non-learning bird inhabiting African savanna woodlands. We quantified vocal individuality across multiple song units and tested whether acoustic variation covaried with male m

Endoscopic Sealing With a Polyglycolic Acid Sheet for Restoration of Vocal Fold Mucosa in Dogs.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Voice outcomes of cordectomy for early glottic cancer are often poor due to vocal fold scarring and tissue defects. Improvements in this aspect could make cordectomy a more acceptable treatment option than radiotherapy. We hypothesized that a polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheet could be used to cover vocal fold defects. The present study aimed to prevent vocal fold scarring after cordectomy using the PGA sheet. STUDY DESIGN: Animal experiment. METHODS: Nine male beagles were divided into three groups including a control group (n = 3). Following cordectomy, the vocal fold def

Calming Hungarian Grey Cattle in Headlocks Using Processed Nasal Vocalization of a Mother Cow.

Sound analysis is an important field of research for improving precision livestock farming systems. If the information carried by livestock sounds is interpreted correctly, it could be used to improve management and welfare assessment in this field. Therefore, we hypothesized that the nasal vocalization of a mother cow could have a calming effect on conspecifics. The nasal vocalization in our study was recorded from a mother cow (not part of the test herd) while it was licking its day-old calf. The raw sound was analyzed, cleaned from noises, and the most representative vocalization was length

Reanimation of paralyzed laryngeal muscles by electrical stimulation synchronized with inspiration.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of electrical stimulation on denervated cat posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This study was conducted on six cats with PCA muscle denervation. All animals were sacrificed 12 weeks after surgery and the glottal area in the live animals and the fiber diameters of PCA muscle were obtained. RESULTS: Signals synchronized with inspiration were recorded and transmitted to stimulate PCA muscle. The abduction of the paralyzed vocal cord during inspiration was observed; this allows enough flow of air through the larynx to maintain the

Dynamics of jaw kinematics and fundamental frequency suggest vocal tract tuning in the indris' song.

The ability to modify the supralaryngeal vocal tract, particularly by adjusting mouth opening, can align formants and harmonics, thereby enhancing vocal intensity. This phenomenon, known as formant tuning, has been described in human singers as well as in various mammalian and avian species. However, little is known about its role in singing primates. In this study, we investigated whether vertical mouth opening in the indri (Indri indri), the only known singing lemur, covaries with the fundamental frequency (fo) of its vocalizations, a parameter directly related to the first formant in this s

Botulinum toxin injection in the treatment of vocal fold paralysis associated with multiple sclerosis: a case report.

Botulinum toxin has been demonstrated clinically to be an effective treatment for a variety of laryngeal problems, most notably spasmodic dysphonia. As in other movement disorders, the theory behind the injection of this substance in the larynx has been a weakening of the vocal fold musculature to relieve uncoordinated and spasmodic movement of the vocal folds, presumably rebalancing the forces within the intralaryngeal musculature. Recently, this concept was applied to help reposition the arytenoid cartilage in acute and longstanding anteromedial cricoarytenoid dislocations. This same concept

The effect of neurodegeneration on ultrasonic vocalisations (USV) and their neuronal substrates in mice and rats: A systematic review.

Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Frontotemporal Degeneration, significantly impair communication abilities in humans. Animal models, particularly rats and mice, are widely used to study the underlying mechanisms of these disorders. Ultrasonic vocalisations (USVs) play a crucial role in signalling emotional states during social interaction, mating, and distress and may reflect low versus high arousal and/or a positive versus negative affective state of the animal, making them valuable behavioural biomarkers for neurological dysfunction. This systematic review sy

Bilateral thyroarytenoid denervation: a new treatment for laryngeal hyperadduction disorders studied in the canine.

Adductor spasmodic dysphonia is a vocal disorder of uncertain etiology with no satisfactory long-term treatment. Recently, injection of botulinum toxin (Botax) into the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle has been used as an effective temporary treatment. A surgical counterpart to bilateral TA Botox injection is described in this article. Bilateral thyroarytenoid denervation was performed through a window in the thyroid cartilage in seven canines, including four that were studied 3 months after the procedure. No serious complications occurred in the animals, each maintaining full vocal fold abduction a

Impact of Circulating Estrogen and Mild Systemic Dehydration on Ultrasonic Vocalizations in Female Rats.

PURPOSE: Hormonal and hydration states are known to individually influence laryngeal physiology, yet their distinct and combined effects on vocal function remain poorly understood. This study investigated the interaction of reduced circulating estrogen, estradiol replacement, and mild systemic dehydration (DEHY) on ultrasonic vocalization (USV) in adult female rats. METHOD: Forty-eight Long-Evans rats were assigned to six groups (n = 8 per group) that differed in hormonal state (control, ovariectomized + estradiol pellet [OVX + Estradiol], OVX + placebo pellet) and hydration status (euhydrati

A Foxp2 Mutation Implicated in Human Speech Deficits Alters Sequencing of Ultrasonic Vocalizations in Adult Male Mice.

Development of proficient spoken language skills is disrupted by mutations of the FOXP2 transcription factor. A heterozygous missense mutation in the KE family causes speech apraxia, involving difficulty producing words with complex learned sequences of syllables. Manipulations in songbirds have helped to elucidate the role of this gene in vocal learning, but findings in non-human mammals have been limited or inconclusive. Here, we performed a systematic study of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) of adult male mice carrying the KE family mutation. Using novel statistical tools, we found that Fox

A novel blood-sampling technique in lactating sows: The mammary vein route.

In the pig industry, labour efficiency and animal welfare have become two of the most important factors for achieving technical goals and farming competitiveness. Blood sampling is one of the most common sample-collecting techniques, but routine on-field blood collection can be very demanding for farm operators and the welfare of the animals, in particular for lactating sows. The aim of this study was to describe and investigate the mammary vein as a novel means of blood access in lactating sows that does not require coercive restraint. The study involved a total of 68 sows: 34 animals were sa
