[Phoniatric aspects in the rehabilitation of patients with cochlear implants].

The method employed in conventional rehabilitation programmes after cochlear implantation is described in detail. A cochlear implant is expected to provide a better acoustic speech discrimination by recognition of prosodic speech elements, such as rhythm, stress, intonation and rudimentary discrimination of phonemes. Furthermore we need to know about the influence of the new auditory control on speech and voice of the deaf. These changes are regularly documented by logopaedic examinations and phonetically adjusted tests. The indication of cochlear implantation in prelingually deaf and in child

Speech recognition in individuals with sensorineural hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss can negatively influence the communication performance of individuals, who should be evaluated with suitable material and in situations of listening close to those found in everyday life. OBJECTIVE: To analyze and compare the performance of patients with mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss in speech recognition tests carried out in silence and with noise, according to the variables ear (right and left) and type of stimulus presentation. METHODS: The study included 19 right-handed individuals with mild-to-moderate symmetrical bilateral sensorineural hearing

The "reading the mind in films" task: complex emotion recognition in adults with and without autism spectrum conditions.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) have difficulties recognizing mental states in others. Most research has focused on recognition of basic emotions from faces and voices separately. This study reports the results of a new task, assessing recognition of complex emotions and mental states from social scenes taken from feature films. The film format arguably is more challenging and ecologically closer to real social situations. SAMPLE AND METHOD: A group of adults with ASC (n=22) were compared to a group of matched controls from the general population (n=22). Particip

Childhood prosopagnosia.

K.D. has been unable to recognize people's faces since sustaining cerebral injury in infancy. Investigation of this disorder carried out when K.D. was aged 8 to 11 years showed that although her basic visual abilities were impaired, they were no poorer than those of other children who recognized faces without difficulty. K.D. had learned to read, but had not regained ability to recognize people's faces; instead she relied primarily on voices as a cue to person recognition. There was no evidence of any degree of overt or covert recognition of familiar faces, and K.D. also experienced problems i

Prosopagnosia: current perspectives.

Prosopagnosia is a selective visual agnosia characterized by the inability to recognize the identity of faces. There are both acquired forms secondary to brain damage and developmental forms without obvious structural lesions. In this review, we first discuss the diagnosis of acquired and developmental prosopagnosia, and the challenges present in the latter case. Second, we discuss the evidence regarding the selectivity of the prosopagnosic defect, particularly in relation to the recognition of other objects, written words (another visual object category requiring high expertise), and voices.

False recognition/misidentification of unfamiliar person after cerebral infarction: A case report.

An 84-year-old man manifested false recognition/misidentification of unfamiliar person after cardiogenic cerebral infarction. He had good visual and hearing acuity, no hemianopsia, unilateral spatial neglect and visual object agnosia. However, he was unable to remember faces of his rehabilitation therapists, and repeatedly misidentified other patients' visitors and therapists as his family members and friends, without recognizing his mistakes. General cognitive function was preserved with Hasegawa dementia score-revised (HDS-R) 25/30 (cut-off score 20). In terms of recognition of faces, tasks

Evaluating Voice-Assistant Commands for Dementia Detection.

Early detection of cognitive decline involved in Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) in older adults living alone is essential for developing, planning, and initiating interventions and support systems to improve users' everyday function and quality of life. In this paper, we explore the voice commands using a Voice-Assistant System (VAS), i.e., Amazon Alexa, from 40 older adults who were either Healthy Control (HC) participants or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) participants, age 65 or older. We evaluated the data collected from voice commands, cognitive assessments, and intervie

Effect of Occupational Noise Exposure on the Prevalence of Benign Vocal Fold Lesions: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.

OBJECTIVES: Voice abuse in noisy environments can result in voice disorders. However, insufficient studies have sought to differentiate vocal cord lesions through laryngoscopic examinations among workers in noisy environments. This study investigated the relationship between a history of noise exposure in the workplace and benign vocal fold lesions (BVFLs). METHODS: We used Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2010 to 2012. The chi-square test was used to compare characteristics between two groups according to the presence or absence of BVFLs. To investigate the as

Effects of applying Gaussianising transformations to DNN embeddings before calculating likelihood ratios.

This paper investigates the effects of applying multiple different sequences of transformations that aim to Gaussianise the distribution of deep-neural-network embeddings (DNN embeddings) before those DNN embeddings are used to calculate likelihood ratios using a model that assumes Gaussian distributions (Probabilistic Linear Discriminant Analysis, PLDA). The transformations were originally developed for non-forensic applications of automatic speaker recognition. This paper investigates the effects of applying the transformations under three different sets of forensically realistic conditions.

A new metaphor for speaking of trauma: the toroidal island model.

This article provides a model for speaking of trauma based on the author's ethnographic and clinical experiences mainly in Japan. It is often assumed that a person with more serious trauma has the right and ability to speak out. But those who are at the center of trauma and unable to survive cannot testify. Based on this notion, a toroidal island (TI) model, shaped like a doughnut with a landlocked inner sea, is developed. The voices come from the survivors on the inner slope and from the supporters on the outer slope on the island. The model integrates various aspects of trauma by employing m

Cognitive reserve, emotion perception and theory of mind in non-demented Parkinson's disease.

The Cognitive Reserve (CR) hypothesis attempts to account for individual differences in vulnerability to age- or pathology-related brain changes, where lifetime experiences (e.g., education, literacy attainment) have protective effects on cognitive decline. While evidence suggests CR proxies predict cognitive performance in Parkinson's disease (PD), it is less clear whether CR proxies attenuate decline on social cognition tasks. This study examined the influence of distinct CR proxies on performance on social cognition tasks assessing theory of mind and emotion perception. Twenty non-demented

[The effect of anchor voices and visible speech in training in the GRABS scale of perceptual evaluation of dysphonia].

INTRODUCTION: Perceptual evaluation of voice quality remains a key standard for judgment of vocal impairment. The GRABS method has become a commonly-used scale for rating severity of dysphonia, but it has no published, standardised protocol to follow. Training is important for reaching good interrater agreement for its parameters; however, the references most often cited for the GRABS provide no guidelines for clinical administration, speech material or rating calibration. This study investigated the effect of anchors (standard reference voices) and visible speech (narrow band spectrogram) in

Emotion recognition in children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

There is a limited amount of research that examines social-emotional functioning in children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and the majority of it relies on parent and teacher reports of social impairments. Because these provide broad measures of social function, they fail to elucidate the underlying specific skills with which this group of children has difficulty. The current study examines emotion-recognition abilities in children with FASD, as it plays a central role in social interaction. Participants were 22 children with diagnosed FASD (ages 8-14), and age- and gender-match

Visual and auditory affect recognition in senile and normal elderly persons.

Senile patients were compared to normal elderly people for visual and auditory affect recognition. The study consisted of eight conditions, with the subjects prompted verbally to point to happy, sad and angry pictures in the first five. The pictures consisted of expressive faces, expressive postures with blank faces and matching facial and postural expressions in Conditions 1-3, respectively. The facial and postural expressions conflicted in Conditions 4 and 5, with the facial expressions redundant in Condition 4 and the postures redundant in Condition 5. Conditions 6 and 7 were the same as th

[Evaluation of vocal abuse by the patient and correlation with vocal cords lesions].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the recognition by the patient of quantitative vocal abuse and its assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 336 files of patients presenting with dysphonia were evaluated with a questionnaire composed of 4 items. We compared the patients, evaluation of their vocal abuse with the presence or absence of benign lesions on the vocal cords. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Abuse and misuse are often confused and the word abuse does not seem to be the most appropriate to describe the quantitative excess of voice use which is distinct from misuse.

The N400 and late occipital positivity in processing dynamic facial expressions with natural emotional voice.

People require multimodal emotional interactions to live in a social environment. Several studies using dynamic facial expressions and emotional voices have reported that multimodal emotional incongruency evokes an early sensory component of event-related potentials (ERPs), while others have found a late cognitive component. The integration mechanism of two different results remains unclear. We speculate that it is semantic analysis in a multimodal integration framework that evokes the late ERP component. An electrophysiological experiment was conducted using emotionally congruent or incongrue

Perception of Mandarin Chinese with cochlear implants using enhanced temporal pitch cues.

A cochlear implant (CI) signal processing strategy named F0 modulation (F0mod) was compared with the advanced combination encoder (ACE) strategy in a group of four post-lingually deafened Mandarin Chinese speaking CI listeners. F0 provides an enhanced temporal pitch cue by amplitude modulating the multichannel electrical stimulation pattern at the fundamental frequency (F0) of the incoming speech signal. Word and sentence recognition tests were carried out in quiet and in noise. The responses for the word-recognition test were further segmented into phoneme and tone scores. Off-line implementa

Differential contribution of right and left temporo-occipital and anterior temporal lesions to face recognition disorders.

In the study of prosopagnosia, several issues (such as the specific or non-specific manifestations of prosopagnosia, the unitary or non-unitary nature of this syndrome and the mechanisms underlying face recognition disorders) are still controversial. Two main sources of variance partially accounting for these controversies could be the qualitative differences between the face recognition disorders observed in patients with prevalent lesions of the right or left hemisphere and in those with lesions encroaching upon the temporo-occipital (TO) or the (right) anterior temporal cortex. Results of o
