Mental states such as stress and anxiety can cause heart disease. On the other hand, meditation can improve cardiac performance. In this study, the heart rate variability, directed transfer function and corrected conditional entropy were used to investigate the effects of mental tasks on cardiac performance, and the functional coupling between the cerebral cortex and the heart. When subjects tried to decrease their heart rate by volition, the sympathetic nervous system was inhibited and the heart rate decreased. When subjects tried to increase their heart rate by volition, the parasympathetic

Based on the tremendous impact of impaired respiratory muscle function, tests on their function play a significant role in respiratory and intensive care medicine. Besides differential diagnosing e.g. during prolonged weaning and quantification of impaired respiratory muscle function, e.g. in COPD, neuro-muscular diseases or ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction, those tests qualify for follow-up assessment, e.g. phrenic nerve lesions or specific respiratory muscle training. In general, (simple) volitional and (complex) non-volitional tests are available. Volitional tests aim at screeni

Primary motor networks are known to be involved in the control of voluntary oral movements as well as the modulation of pharyngeal movements during experimentally controlled single swallows performed on command. The role of these networks in the more typical task of sequential swallowing remains unexplored. This study evaluated the hypothesis that experimental disruption of motor cortical activation would reduce the rate and regularity of repeatedly performed volitional or volitionally initiated motor tasks controlled by corticospinal (finger tapping) and corticobulbar (eyebrow movement, jaw o

This study proposes a novel gait rehabilitation method that uses a hybrid system comprising a powered ankle-foot orthosis (PAFO) and FES, and presents its coordination control. The developed system provides assistance to the ankle joint in accordance with the degree of volitional participation of patients with post-stroke hemiplegia. The PAFO adopts the desired joint angle and impedance profile obtained from biomechanical simulation. The FES patterns of the tibialis anterior and soleus muscles are derived from predetermined electromyogram patterns of healthy individuals during gait and persona

Previous research has shown that people are sensitive to statistical regularities and will implicitly learn to bias attention toward locations and features frequently associated with search targets. However, most prior work has involved a single biasing contingency. In Experiment 1, we investigate whether individuals can simultaneously learn and implement two distinct contingencies: one based on location and another based on color. The results suggest that both contingencies are learned implicitly and exert independent effects on attentional allocation. Experiments 2 and 3 examine whether shif

The discussion of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia has traditionally focused on verbal auditory hallucinations, or 'voices'. Little attention, on the other hand, has been given to the phenomenon of musical hallucinations. In an effort to characterize the prevalence and phenomenology of musical hallucinations, 100 consecutive schizophrenic inpatients were examined for the presence of musical hallucinations and musical imagery. Sixteen patients responded positively, and were engaged in a more thorough interview. They were then divided into two groups: those with musical hallucinations, a

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the role of the cerebral cortex in the swallowing movement, the difference between the waveforms of contingent negative variation (CNV) for the command swallowing and movement-related cortical potential (MRCP) obtained during the volitional swallowing task in humans was investigated.
METHODS: Subjects were instructed to swallow their saliva as quickly as possible in response to a sound signal 4s after the onset of a self-paced breath holding in the command swallowing task or to swallow it while holding their breath for 4s in the volitional swallowing task.
RESULTS: CNV

Verbal and non-verbal sequential abilities were compared in a group of 10 children with developmental verbal apraxia. Manual gestures, constructional praxic abilities and non-speech volitional oral movements were also studied. Results indicated that these children were deficient in verbal sequential abilities, both with reference to their non-verbal sequential abilities and to normative data. As a group, the children did not present manual-gestural or constructional apraxias, nor oral apraxias for single non-speech volitional movements. However, most had difficulty with sequences of non-speech

INTRODUCTION: Post-stroke depression is a frequent but under-diagnosed condition. Nevertheless, it impacts participation in activities of daily living (ADLs) and the rehabilitation process. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of post-stroke depression on participation in ADLs and on occupational therapy (OT) intervention in adults.
METHODS: An observational study was conducted through a survey. The questionnaire covered OTs view about the influence of post-stroke depression on ADLs and occupational therapy treatment. Data collected by online questionnaire were analyzed through S

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper was to develop and test a novel control algorithm that enables stroke survivors to pedal a cycle in a desired cadence range despite varying levels of functional abilities after stroke.
METHODS: A novel algorithm was developed which automatically adjusts 1) the intensity of functional electrical stimulation (FES) delivered to the leg muscles, and 2) the current delivered to an electric motor. The algorithm automatically switches between assistive, uncontrolled, and resistive modes to accommodate for differences in functional impairment, based on the misma

Stress has been studied extensively in psychology. Only recently, however, has research started to address the question of how individuals manage to recover from stress. Recovery from stress is analyzed as a process of self-regulation. Several individual difference variables which affect the efficiency of self-regulation have been integrated into a structured model of the recovery process. Such variables are action versus state orientation (a tendency to ruminate, e.g., about a past experience) and volitional components, such as self-determination, self-motivation, emotion control, rumination,

RATIONALE: Data on respiratory muscle performance in children with neuromuscular disorders are limited.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess respiratory muscle strength by volitional and nonvolitional tests and to compare these tests with forced vital capacity.
METHODS: Inspiratory muscle strength was assessed by measuring transdiaphragmatic and esophageal pressures generated during volitional and nonvolitional maneuvers, whereas expiratory muscle strength was assessed by measuring the gastric pressure generated during a cough maneuver. Lung volumes were assessed by measuring forc

BACKGROUND: It is known that automatic breathing is controlled by centres in the lower brain stem, whereas volitional breathing is controlled by the cerebral cortical centres. In hemiplegia, lesions above the brain stem result in paralysis of limb muscles. This study was performed to determine whether the diaphragm might also be affected in patients with hemiplegia.
METHODS: Studies were performed in six normal control subjects and in eight patients with complete hemiplegia caused by a lesion above the brain stem, all with no known chest disease. Full lung function tests were performed. Diaph

The prognosis for recovery of motor function in motor complete spinal cord injured (SCI) individuals is poor. Our research team has demonstrated that lumbosacral spinal cord epidural stimulation (scES) and activity-based training can progressively promote the recovery of volitional leg movements and standing in individuals with chronic clinically complete SCI. However, scES was required to perform these motor tasks. Herein, we show the progressive recovery of voluntary leg movement and standing without scES in an individual with chronic, motor complete SCI throughout 3.7 years of activity-base

Abnormalities in the control of saccades have been described in patients with cerebral pathology.(1, 2) We assessed control of visually guided, reflexive and volitional saccades in 16 patients suffering severe traumatic brain injury and 12 controls and related the results to deficits on neuropsychological tests of speed of information processing and goal directed behaviour. All saccadic latencies were prolonged. Suppression of inappropriate saccades was impaired on volitional saccade tests which proved to be more sensitive in identifying impairment of goal directed behaviour than the neuropsyc

Autonomy is increasingly understood as a relationally embedded process rather than a pursuit of independence, yet few longitudinal studies track how volition develops across cultural and developmental contexts. This study examined the dual trajectories of individuating autonomy and relating autonomy across adolescence and educational transitions. Participants were 777 Taiwanese adolescents (48.8% female; M = 15.22 years, SD = 1.56), including junior high (n = 371) and senior high (n = 406) cohorts, each followed across four waves to yield eight cohort-sequential waves. STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
BACKGROUND: Long-term deficits in quadriceps femoris muscle strength and impaired muscle activation are common among individuals with total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Failure to address strength-related impairments results in poor surgical and functional outcomes, which may accelerate the progression of osteoarthritis in other lower extremity joints. The purpose of the current case report was to implement a neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) treatment protocol in conjunction with an intense weight-training program, with the aim of reversing persistent quadric

Individuals with flying phobia experience increases in subjective anxiety in response to flying-related cues. However, the cognitive processes that contribute to cue-reactive anxiety in individuals with flying-related anxiety remain poorly understood. Preliminary research suggests that changes in visual imagery and volitional control may contribute to this cue-reactive anxiety. Engaging in affect labelling during exposure therapy has been shown to reduce cue-reactive anxiety in individuals with fears relating to a variety of stimuli but has not been investigated in the fear of flying. The pres
