A comparison of jump height, takeoff velocities, and blocking coverage in the swing and traditional volleyball blocking techniques.

The purpose of this study was to compare traditional and swing blocking techniques on center of mass (COM) projectile motion and effective blocking area in nine healthy Division I female volleyball players. Two high-definition (1080 p) video cameras (60 Hz) were used to collect two-dimensional variables from two separate views. One was placed perpendicular to the plane of the net and the other was directed along the top of the net, and were used to estimate COM locations and blocking area in a plane parallel to the net and hand penetration through the plane of the net respectively. Video of bo

Humeral avulsion of the inferior glenohumeral ligament in college female volleyball players caused by repetitive microtrauma.

BACKGROUND: Humeral avulsion of the inferior glenohumeral ligament is a rare injury resulting from hyperabduction and external rotation, and it is most commonly seen with sports-related injuries, including those from volleyball. The anterior band of the inferior glenohumeral ligament is most commonly injured (93%), whereas the posterior band is infrequently injured. The axillary pouch humeral avulsion of the inferior glenohumeral ligament as a result of repetitive microtrauma has not been yet described in the English literature. HYPOTHESIS: Humeral avulsions of the inferior glenohumeral ligam

Combined Non-Invasive Cardiac Imaging and Genetic Testing of Elite Volleyball Players: A Ten-Year Experience.

Sudden cardiac death in athletes is a devastating event. Although significant progress has been made in identifying the underlying pathophysiology and genetic basis for sudden cardiac death in young athletes, controversy exists regarding cost-effective screening measures to identify at-risk individuals. In this report we describe our ten-year experience performing cardiovascular assessments on 150 members of the United States Men's and Women's National Volleyball teams. Through a combination of history, physical, echocardiography and genetic testing, we have identified one previously undiagnos

Relationship between ankle mobility and vertical jump performance across playing positions in professional female volleyball players.

The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between ankle range of motion (ROM), inter-limb ROM asymmetry (ASYM), and countermovement vertical jump (CMJ) force-time metrics across five playing positions in professional female volleyball players (n = 124). Following a standardized warm-up protocol, ankle ROM was assessed bilaterally during a weight-bearing front lunge using a digital goniometer. Then, each athlete performed three CMJs with no arm swing while standing on a uni-axial force plate system. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were used to measure the strengt

Individual responses to pomegranate juice on recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage in collegiate male volleyball players.

BACKGROUND: Volleyball demands frequent explosive, stretch-shortening muscle actions that elevate the risk for exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Polyphenol-rich pomegranate juice (POMj) has been proposed to aid recovery, yet evidence in highly trained team-sport athletes is limited. This study investigated whether short-term POMj enhances functional and isokinetic recovery following an EIMD protocol in collegiate male volleyball players and identified individual responders using the smallest worthwhile change (SWC) method. METHODS: Fourteen Tier-3

Characterization of physical performance and change of direction deficit across age groups in young female volleyball players.

BACKGROUND: Volleyball performance relies heavily on agility, strength, and the ability to change direction, yet there is limited research investigating these physical attributes across different age groups in youth volleyball players. The change of direction (COD) deficit-a metric that isolates directional efficiency by comparing agility to linear speed-may provide a more nuanced understanding of an athlete's movement capabilities. The aim of this study was to investigate: (i) the differences in anthropometrics, lower limb strength/power, dynamic balance, linear sprint speed, and change of di

Comparison of isometric strength in rotator cuff and scapulothoracic muscles between elite volleyball athletes versus non-athletes.

BACKGROUND: Volleyball is an exceptionally popular global sport that involves repetitive, rapid, powerful and wide overhead movements, which can seriously alter normal shoulder kinematics. A recognized hallmark of shoulder muscle balance is the ratio of shoulder external (ER) and internal (IR) rotators. By extension, objective measurement of shoulder muscles' strength could help identify at risk athletes and preempt those injuries by engaging in prescriptive strength training programs. METHODS: This cross-sectional study measured the isometric strengths of 1) shoulder internal and external ro
