Hourly air pollution exposure and emergency department visit for acute myocardial infarction: Vulnerable populations and susceptible time window.

Although short-term exposure to air pollution can trigger sudden heart attacks, evidence is scarce regarding the relationship between sub-daily changes in air pollution level and the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Here we assessed the intraday effect of air pollution on AMI risk and potential effect modification by pre-existing cardiac risk factors. Hourly data on emergency department visits (EDVs) for AMI and air pollutants in Brisbane, Australia during 2013-2015 were acquired from pertinent government departments. A time-stratified case-crossover analysis was adopted to examine r

Identification of vulnerable populations and knowledge, attitude, and practice analysis of echinococcosis in Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Echinococcosis is one of the 17 neglected tropical diseases recognized by the World Health Organization and causes a huge global disease burden. The Tibet Autonomous Region (Tibet) of China is the most epidemic area of echinococcosis worldwide. Echinococcosis poses an enormous threat to local public health and economic development. Identifying vulnerable populations and analyzing people's knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) with respect to echinococcosis is necessary to prevent and control echinococcosis. Based on reported cases and questionnaire responses, we first used a k-prototypes c

Hepatitis C among vulnerable populations: A seroprevalence study of homeless, people who inject drugs and prisoners in London.

Injecting drugs substantially increases the risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and is common in the homeless and prisoners. Capturing accurate data on disease prevalence within these groups is challenging but is essential to inform strategies to reduce HCV transmission. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of HCV in these populations. We conducted a cross-sectional study between May 2011 and June 2013 in London and, using convenience sampling, recruited participants from hostels for the homeless, drug treatment services and a prison. A questionnaire was administered and

Limited access to hepatitis B/C treatment among vulnerable risk populations: an expert survey in six European countries.

BACKGROUND: To investigate access to treatment for chronic hepatitis B/C among six vulnerable patient/population groups at-risk of infection: undocumented migrants, asylum seekers, people without health insurance, people with state insurance, people who inject drugs (PWID) and people abusing alcohol. METHODS: An online survey among experts in gastroenterology, hepatology and infectious diseases in 2012 in six EU countries: Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. A four-point ordinal scale measured access to treatment (no, some, significant or complete restriction). RESULT

Microvascular Complications of Food Insecurity in a Vulnerable Patient Population.

Background: Food insecurity (FI), which is defined as limited or uncertain access to sufficient, nutritious food, disproportionately affects low-income populations and has been linked to poor control of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with North Louisiana having one of the highest rates of FI in the United States. The interaction between FI and neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage has not been well characterized in relation to microvascular diabetic complications. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between FI, socioeconomic disadvantage

Exploring Preventive Healthcare in a High-Risk Vulnerable Population.

This study describes preventive care behaviors and explores opportunities to deliver preventive sexual healthcare to a high-risk vulnerable population. Data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system high-risk heterosexuals (HET) cycle (2019) in Houston, Texas, was used to describe preventive care utilization and assess the relationship between healthcare utilization and sociodemographic characteristics. More than 47% reported having no usual source of healthcare, and 94.6% reported receiving no non-HIV STI testing in the past 12 months. Additionally, many sociodemographic fac

Selective vulnerability in neuronal populations in nmd/SMARD1 mice.

Spinal muscular atrophy with respiratory distress type 1 (SMARD1) is an autosomal recessive motor neuron disease causing distal limb muscle atrophy that progresses proximally and is accompanied by diaphragmatic paralysis. Neuromuscular junction (NMJ) alterations have been reported in muscles of SMARD1 model mice, known as nmd mice, with varying degrees of severity, suggesting that different muscles are specifically and selectively resistant or susceptible to denervation. To evaluate the extent of NMJ pathology in a broad range of muscles, a panel of axial and appendicular muscles were isolated

Hemodialysis: A model for extreme physiology in a vulnerable patient population.

Hemodialysis (HD) is a lifesaving treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease, which is very efficient in the correction of abnormalities of the internal environment. However, this efficiency also induces significant hemodynamic, thermal, and respiratory stressors. These have parallels with the extreme physiologic demands which are normally mainly experienced by healthy subjects under adverse environmental conditions, with the difference that they must be endured by a vulnerable patient population. Hemodynamic stress induced by ultrafiltration leads to a decline in circulating blood vo

Vulnerabilities and caregiving in an ethnically diverse HIV-infected population.

The current study aimed to identify the primary informal caregivers of a group of urban HIV+ adults (n = 250) and to determine relationships between demographic, medical, and substance use characteristics and caregivers types. Reported caregiver types included 36.8% familial, 22.4% significant other, and 22.8% institutional or other caregiver relationships. The remaining 18% of the sample reported having no individual that rendered informal care. Factors associated with the absence of an informal caregiver included African American race and low education. Hispanic participants reported the hig

From the streets to assisted living: perceptions of a vulnerable population.

The rapid growth of assisted-living facilities is paralleled by the necessity to understand the needs of the people living in them. A hallmark challenge for individuals who are poor and disabled, and often marginalized from mainstream society, is maintaining integrity and being a whole person, rather than a sum of broken parts. A key to maintaining this integrity is the ability to find stable housing and support systems. The inner-city assisted-living facility in this study is unique in that all of its residents are funded by Medicaid. The residents have complex needs related to histories of h

Taking diabetes risk screening to the community: Feasibility and acceptability of the FINDRISC tool in vulnerable populations in Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing in Argentina, with an adult prevalence of 14%. Early detection through risk assessment tools like the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) is recommended, but community-level implementation remains limited. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted in 40 primary care centers across San Juan, Salta, and Tandil. Adults (>18 years) without diabetes were screened using a tablet-based FINDRISC questionnaire. Quantitative data included risk scores and sociodemographic variables; qualitative data explored barriers and facilitators throug

Cost-effectiveness analysis of hepatitis E screening and vaccination: targeting vulnerable populations in outbreak and sporadic settings in China.

This study evaluated the economic and health benefits of hepatitis E (HEV) screening and vaccination in both outbreak and sporadic settings in China. Decision-analytic Markov models were used to evaluate the population impact and cost-effectiveness of HEV screening and vaccination for people with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), older adults, pregnant women, and women of childbearing age. Simulations projected outcomes over six months for outbreak settings and lifetime horizons for sporadic settings. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were derived from a health system perspective with cos

Community-Defined Challenges: A Five-Year Qualitative Needs and Resources Assessment in Vulnerable Latino Populations of Miami-Dade County.

BACKGROUND: Miami-Dade County ranks first in Florida for HIV cases, yet broad epidemiological data often masks the "on-the-ground" reality of its most vulnerable residents. While standard reports suggest declining domestic violence, these statistics fail to account for community-defined health crises-the "SAVA" syndemic (substance use, violence, and HIV/AIDS)-occurring within localized micro-communities. METHODS: Leveraging five years of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and Grounded Theory, this study engaged 97 community members and leaders to unmask these hidden burdens. We emp

A study of vulnerable student populations, exclusion and marginalization in Sierra Leonean secondary schools: a social justice theory analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sierra Leone faces challenges in ensuring equitable and inclusive education for all its citizens. Certain groups, including pregnant students, student mothers, students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students, and those without family support, are particularly vulnerable to exclusion and marginalisation. These groups are identified as vulnerable based on criteria established by organisations such as the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which highlight the interplay between health, socio-economic statu
