Handstands are a key skill in many specialist sports involving the use of upper limbs in a role usually associated with lower limbs. Handstand sports have a high incidence of pain in the shoulder, but with little understanding of handstand walking biomechanics. We aimed to explore the biomechanics of handstand walking in athletes with and without shoulder pain to assess underlying differences across whole limb function. Ten participants, who could handstand walk 6 steps, had force and positional data collected. Shoulder pain was assessed via questionnaire. Forces, centre of mass position, velo

Difficulty walking is a common complaint in neurological practice which may arise from a wide range of disorders of the central nervous system, peripheral nerves, or musculoskeletal system. Because human gait requires the complex integration of multiple neural and biomechanical processes, careful clinical assessment is essential to achieve accurate diagnosis. In this review, we outlined a practical approach for patients presenting with walking difficulties. Emphasis is placed on the importance of detailed history-taking and neurological examination, including observation of gait, posture, gait

Apraxia is a neuropsychological disorder that impairs voluntary, purposeful movements, with "Gait apraxia" specifically affecting walking. Because of the lack of standardized diagnostic tools, in Italian, we translated and adapted the "Assessment of Walking Skills" (AWS) scale, originally developed for identifying gait apraxia in Alzheimer's patients. The AWS includes 42 items that evaluate trunk and leg movements, useful for comparing the performance between patients and healthy controls. This translation and adaptation represent a critical step toward standardizing the AWS scale for the Ital

It has been proposed that humans' exceptional locomotor endurance evolved partly with foraging in hot open habitats and subsequently about 2 million years ago with persistence hunting, for which endurance running was instrumental. However, persistence hunting by walking, if successful, could select for locomotor endurance even before the emergence of any running-related traits in human evolution. Using a heat exchange model validated here in 73 humans and 55 ungulates, we simulated persistence hunts for prey of three sizes (100, 250, and 400 kg) and three sweating capacities (nonsweating, low,

A spinal cord injury interrupts pathways from the brain and brainstem that project to the lumbar spinal cord, leading to paralysis. Here we show that spatiotemporal epidural electrical stimulation (EES) of the lumbar spinal cord1-3 applied during neurorehabilitation4,5 (EESREHAB) restored walking in nine individuals with chronic spinal cord injury. This recovery involved a reduction in neuronal activity in the lumbar spinal cord of humans during walking. We hypothesized that this unexpected reduction reflects activity-dependent selection of specific neuronal subpopulations that become essentia

OBJECTIVE: Walking through a narrow aperture requires unique postural configurations, i.e., body rotation in the yaw dimension. Stroke individuals may have difficulty performing the body rotations due to motor paralysis on one side of their body. The present study was therefore designed to investigate how successfully such individuals walk through apertures and how they perform body rotation behavior.
METHOD: Stroke fallers (n = 10), stroke non-fallers (n = 13), and healthy controls (n = 23) participated. In the main task, participants walked for 4 m and passed through apertures of various wi

A characteristic of many neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is the aggregation of specific proteins into protein inclusions and/or plaques in degenerating brains. While much of the aggregated protein consists of disease specific proteins, such as amyloid-β, α-synuclein, or superoxide dismutase1 (SOD1), many other proteins are known to aggregate in these disorders. Although the role of protein aggregates in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases remains unknown, the

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review includes the most up-to-date literature on the causes, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of toe walking.
RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence of toe walking at age 5.5 years is 2% in normally developing children, and 41% in children with a neuropsychiatric diagnosis or developmental delays. A recent systematic review concluded that there is good evidence for casting and surgery in the treatment of idiopathic toe walking, with only surgery providing long-term results beyond 1 year. Botox combined with casting does not provide better outcomes compared with

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study is to provide clinical examination methods that were designed specifically to assess the level of severity among children with idiopathic toe walking (ITW). The idiopathic toe-walking pattern of 836 children was recorded and analyzed during 4 years. Questionnaires and clinical measurements were evaluated, along with differential tests, assessing the occurrence and severity of toe walking. Questions about family history and onset of toe walking were evaluated along with special tests and measurements assessing the occurrence and severity of toe walking. The dif

Walking is among the most cost-effective and accessible means of exercise. Mounting evidence suggests that walking may help to maintain physical and cognitive independence in old age by preventing a variety of health problems. However, older Americans fall far short of meeting the daily recommendations for walking. In 2 studies, we examined whether considering older adults' preferential attention to positive information may effectively enhance interventions aimed at promoting walking. In Study 1, we compared the effectiveness of positive, negative, and neutral messages to encourage walking (as

BACKGROUND: Persistent or recurrent hip dysplasia and/or loss of reduction can complicate the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in walking children. In this study, we identify predictors for secondary procedures after open reduction of the hip in walking children with DDH.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of walking children with idiopathic DDH treated with open reduction of the hip and followed up for >5 years. Perioperative factors were analyzed to investigate predictors of reoperation. Factors associated with the need for secondary procedures were identified.

BACKGROUND: With an incidence of 1-2 per 1000 live births, clubfoot is one of the commonest congenital deformities. Deformity has four components: equinus, hindfoot varus, forefoot adductus, and cavus. The Ponseti method for the treatment of clubfoot has been shown to be effective in children up to one year of age. Even with this effective method, late-presenting cases are still challenging. The aim of this study is to evaluate the corrective effect of the Ponseti method on different components of clubfoot after walking age and to find how the patient's age relates to this correction.

Injection users are at risk for vascular injuries resulting in chronic venous disease (CVD). The authors examined walking mobility in relation to CVD for 713 individuals in methadone treatment. The authors used a cross-sectional, comparative design that was stratified on age, sex, ethnicity, and drug use. CVD was present in 92.3% of participants. The structural equation model supported the causal link between leg injection and CVD (.40, P<.001). The worse the mobility, the greater was the CVD classification (-.21, P<.001). CVD had an indirect effect on mobility through pain. CVD and pain need

PURPOSE: The popularity of long-distance walking (LDW) has increased in the last decades. However, the effects of LDW on plantar pressure distribution and foot complaints, in particular, after several days of walking, have not been studied.
METHODS: We obtained the plantar pressure data of 62 subjects who had no history of foot complaints and who walked a total distance of 199.8 km for men (n = 30) and 161.5 km for women (n = 32) during four consecutive days. Plantar pressure was measured each day after the finish (posttests I–IV) and compared with the baseline plantar pressure data, which wa

The walking assist robot was developed to improve gait disturbance in patients with severe disabilities. The robot had a trunk supporter, power generator and operating arms which held patient's lower extremities and simulated walking, a control unit, biofeedback system, and a treadmill. We applied the robot-aided gait training to three patients with severe gait disturbance induced by stroke, axonal Guillan-Barré syndrome or spinal cord injury, and the walking assist robot turned out to be effective in improving the gait disturbance.

A method is proposed to facilitate the quantification and interpretation of inter-joint/-segment coordination. This technique is illustrated using rearfoot-forefoot kinematic data. We expand existing vector coding techniques and introduce a set of operational terms through which the coordinative patterns between the rearfoot segment and the forefoot segment are summarized: in-phase, anti-phase, rearfoot phase and forefoot phase. The literature on foot mechanics has characterized the stable foot at pushoff by a decreasing medial longitudinal arch angle in the sagittal plane, which is accompanie

The effect of step length on minimum required coefficient of friction (microR) during a walking step was isolated from other features that influence the mechanics of foot contact (such as speed). Ground reaction force (GRF) from defined step lengths at consistent forward speed was used to calculate (microR), required coefficent of friction. Some individuals walked in a manner that generated a (microR) that was 50% larger than others, in spite of being restricted to the same speed, step length and step frequency. Unshod subjects had greater (microR) compared to shod subjects except at the short
