Effect of Gaza war on the mental health of different generations in Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to unfavorable environmental circumstances including conflicts and wars increases people's risk of experiencing mental health disturbances. Prevalence rates of anxiety, depression and stress disorders were two- to three-fold higher between people exposed to war or those interested in war news. OBJECTIVES: To explore prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress among Tanta University students and their parents representing different Egyptian generations, and to identify associated and predicting factors of severity and their effect on study or work performance. METHODS: A

Women Vietnam veterans. A comparison of studies.

There is strong evidence that many women exposed to war stress have suffered mental health problems related to their experience, and a substantial number continue to have serious emotional, psychosocial, and other readjustment problems that affect their current level of functioning and life satisfaction. The consistent exposure to severe combat casualties, death and dying, workload extremes, personal deprivation, loss, and danger all take a significant emotional toll. These studies underscore the need for affected women to explore their war experiences and associated feelings with mental healt

Trauma echoes: factors associated with peritraumatic distress and anxiety five days following Iranian missile attack on Israel.

Introduction: On 13-14 April 2024, Iran launched ∼300 drones and missiles at Israel, in an unprecedented attack. As most studies examine the effects of trauma months or years later, less is known about its effects days later. To fill this gap, this study gauged the population response, five days after the attack. Specifically, we examined the prevalence and factors associated with two precursors for later development of PTSD, peritraumatic distress (PD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).Methods: Five-hundred and fifty-three participants (Mage = 57.51, SD = 13.67 years, range [30-90], 48.3

Post-traumatic stress following social media war violence: role of empathy and emotional awareness in youth.

This study investigated associations between exposure to war-related violent content on social media and indirect, media-related post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in a nationally representative sample of adolescents and young adults in Germany (N = 1860; Mage = 18.6 years). Participants completed an online survey assessing violent media exposure, PTSS, alexithymia, different facets of empathy and perceived burden related to current political crises. Regression analyses showed that higher alexithymia, greater somatic empathy, stronger perceived crisis-related burden, younger age and persona

Practice-Oriented Model of Mutual Resonance in Collective Trauma: Music Therapists Amid War.

Collective trauma refers to psychological and emotional consequences experienced by communities exposed to large-scale traumatic events such as war. Civilians under constant threat endure instability, displacement, and loss, facing significant psychological distress. Music therapists in such contexts hold unique positions, providing therapeutic care while simultaneously experiencing the same traumatic reality as citizens. Despite extensive literature on the mental health impact of war, music therapists' lived experiences during active conflict remain underexplored. This study explored experien

Word-finding impairment in veterans of the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

Approximately one quarter of 1991 Persian Gulf War Veterans experience cognitive and physiological sequelae that continue to be unexplained by known medical or psychological conditions. Difficulty coming up with words and names, familiar before the war, is a hallmark of the illness. Three Gulf War Syndrome subtypes have been identified and linked to specific war-time chemical exposures. The most functionally impaired veterans belong to the Gulf War Syndrome 2 (Syndrome 2) group, for which subcortical damage due to toxic nerve gas exposure is the suspected cause. Subcortical damage is often ass

A prediction model of PTSD in the Israeli population in the aftermath of october 7th, 2023, terrorist attack and the Israel-Hamas war.

BACKGROUND: On October 7th, 2023, a mass terror attack was launched by Hamas militants, which was followed by the Israel-Hamas war. These events constitute a nationwide trauma with major ramifications for public mental health. This article presents an evidence-based model for the prediction of the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to the terrorist attack and the war. MAIN BODY: The creation of the model consisted of several steps. Firstly, the Israeli population was divided into six groups based on the intensity, context, and type of traumatic exposure (direct exposur

Association of War-Related and Gender-Based Violence With Mental Health States of Yazidi Women.

IMPORTANCE: Yazidi women in northern Iraq have experienced severe human rights violations through attacks by the so-called Islamic State group, with severe consequences for their health. However, no studies to date have investigated how war-related and gender-based violence, including partner violence, are associated with mental health disorders in this population. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between Yazidi women's experiences of violence (ie, war violence, partner violence, enslavement) and their mental health. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study of 326

Association of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease, Hypertension, Diabetes, and Hyperlipidemia With Gulf War Illness Among Gulf War Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of the 700 000 Gulf War veterans report a chronic symptom-based illness of varying severity referred to as Gulf War illness (GWI). Toxic deployment-related exposures have been implicated in the cause of GWI, some of which contribute to metabolic dysregulation and lipid abnormalities. As this cohort ages, the relationship between GWI and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is a growing concern. We evaluated associations between GWI and ASCVD, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension in veterans of the Gulf War (1990-1991). METHODS AND RESULTS: Analysi

Reduced bone formation in UK Gulf War veterans: a bone histomorphometric study.

AIMS: Gulf War veterans report a high prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms. The aim of this study was to establish whether there were abnormalities in bone turnover and remodelling in a group of symptomatic subjects who had served in the Gulf War. METHODS: Iliac crest bone biopsies were obtained from 17 Gulf War veterans who were seeking litigation and compared with those of 13 age and sex matched healthy controls. Bone histomorphometry was performed using image analysis. RESULTS: Cancellous bone area was significantly lower in Gulf War veterans than in control subjects (p = 0.027) and thi

Hair Cortisol as a Marker of Intergenerational Heritage of War? A Study of Veterans and Their Offspring.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with lower circulating cortisol levels in specific subgroups, which have also been found in the offspring of people with PTSD. The analysis of hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) is a recent methodology which is used to assess long-term systemic cortisol levels. We aimed to study veterans with war-related lifetime PTSD and their respective offspring with regards to HCC. We also studied the influence of lifetime major depressive disorder (MDD), war experiences, and childhood adversities on HCC in these groups. METHODS: 31 male

The impact of war on the development and progression of arterial hypertension and cardiovascular disease: protocol of a prospective study among Ukrainian female refugees.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence supports the impact of psychological factors such as traumatic experiences and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on the incidence of arterial hypertension (HTN) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The war in Ukraine is exposing million inhabitants to traumatic experiences and severe stress. Part of Ukrainians (mostly women and children) left the country to escape war. We report the protocol of a prospective study aiming at the assessment of the impact of war-induced stress on HTN and CVD in women Ukrainian refugees who moved to Poland. METHODS AND DESIGN: The s

Reproductive health and pregnancy outcomes among French gulf war veterans.

BACKGROUND: Since 1993, many studies on the health of Persian Gulf War veterans (PGWVs) have been undertaken. Some authors have concluded that an association exists between Gulf War service and reported infertility or miscarriage, but that effects on PGWV's children were limited. The present study's objective was to describe the reproductive outcome and health of offspring of French Gulf War veterans. METHODS: The French Study on the Persian Gulf War (PGW) and its Health Consequences is an exhaustive cross-sectional study on all French PGWVs conducted from 2002 to 2004. Data were collected by

Mapping the factors behind ongoing war stress in Ukraine-based young civilian adults.

While the literature on well-being and stress following natural disasters is well-developed, it is less so when it comes to ongoing war experiences. Between September and October of 2022, 223 Ukraine-based civilian adults (156 women and 67 men) completed a survey measuring symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), peritraumatic experiences, paranoia, quality of life, death anxiety, anxiety about weapons of mass destruction and depression (i.e. assumed 'war consequence' factors), as well as perceived social support, resilience, loneliness and expected military support from the West (i.

[A patient with Gulf war syndrome. On discussion of an uncertain disease picture].

The Gulf War syndrome represents neurological and neuropsychological disorders in veterans of the Persian Gulf war. Until today, the various symptoms observed could not be attributed to any defined disease. As a possible cause, exposure to neurotoxic agents such as the organophosphates used during the war has been suggested by many authors. We report on a 29-year-old man who suffered from dysmnesia, disturbance of orientation, cognitive impairment, and double vision. His history revealed several front-line operations in 1990 and 1991 during the Gulf War. Physical examinations showed a complex

Altered gut microbiome in a mouse model of Gulf War Illness causes neuroinflammation and intestinal injury via leaky gut and TLR4 activation.

Many of the symptoms of Gulf War Illness (GWI) that include neurological abnormalities, neuroinflammation, chronic fatigue and gastrointestinal disturbances have been traced to Gulf War chemical exposure. Though the association and subsequent evidences are strong, the mechanisms that connect exposure to intestinal and neurological abnormalities remain unclear. Using an established rodent model of Gulf War Illness, we show that chemical exposure caused significant dysbiosis in the gut that included increased abundance of phylum Firmicutes and Tenericutes, and decreased abundance of Bacteroidete

Trauma history and psychopathology in war-affected refugee children referred for trauma-related mental health services in the United States.

There is an increasing need to deliver effective mental health services to refugee children and adolescents across the United States; however, the evidence base needed to guide the design and delivery of services is nascent. We investigated the trauma history profiles, psychopathology, and associated behavioral and functional indicators among war-affected refugee children presenting for psychological treatment. From the National Child Traumatic Stress Network's Core Data Set, 60 war-affected refugee children were identified (51.7% males, mean age = 13.1 years, SD = 4.13). Clinical assessments

Small Fiber Neuropathy in Veterans With Gulf War Illness.

BackgroundGulf War veterans deployed to operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm returned with chronic multisystemic symptoms. This Gulf War Illness (GWI) has defied attempts to identify an underlying etiology. Pain and other symptoms attributable to autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction are common, which may suggest a pathophysiologic underpinning. Small fiber neuropathy (SFN) presents with similar symptoms. Toxic exposures have been implicated in both SFN and GWI.MethodsA retrospective chart review of clinical data at the New Jersey War Related Illness and Injury Study Center addressed
