A University-Led Take-Back Program for Pharmaceutical Waste Management: Eleven Years of Real-World Evidence on Medication Non-Use and Disposal Patterns.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Improper medication use, premature treatment discontinuation, and inadequate disposal contribute to irrational drug consumption and environmental contamination. Although pharmaceutical take-back programs have expanded globally, real-world evidence on household medication accumulation in academic and community settings remains limited. This study aimed to describe longitudinal patterns of medication collection during an eleven-year university-based take-back campaign, with detailed pharmacological characterization available for selected post-pandemic years. METHODS: Real

Association of diarrheal disease with solid waste management practices and perceptions among residents of industrial division in Mbale City: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Globally, an estimated 11.2 billion tons of municipal solid waste are generated annually. The increasing volume and complexity of waste, together with rapid urbanization, pose major risks to human health through diarrheal disease outbreaks. In many urban centers of low- and middle-income countries, solid waste management (SWM) practices remain inadequate. In Mbale City, Uganda, diarrheal disease ranks among the top five causes of morbidity and mortality, with over 28,000 cases reported in 2018. This study assessed the association between diarrheal disease and SWM practices and perc

Route exposure and adverse effects monitoring of Aflatoxin B1 in the workers of wet waste management, the role of body redox system modulation.

Exposure to dust, containing different fungi metabolites such as aflatoxins is a risk factor for developing liver and kidney health abnormalities. Occupational evaluation of the aflatoxin's exposure-induced health abnormalities should include the monitoring of bioaerosols in the workplace and personal air, and applying of appropriate blood biomarkers to assess Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) detrimental effects on a worker's health. However, to the best of our knowledge, these appropriate methods, especially determining the associated-adverse effects on health, following exposure, haven't been well docume

Managing wastes as green resources: cigarette butt-synthesized pesticides are highly toxic to malaria vectors with little impact on predatory copepods.

The development of novel mosquito control tools is a key prerequisite to build effective and reliable Integrated Vector Management strategies. Here, we proposed a novel method using cigarette butts for the synthesis of Ag nanostructures toxic to young instars of the malaria vector Anopheles stephensi, chloroquine (CQ)-resistant malaria parasites Plasmodium falciparum and microbial pathogens. The non-target impact of these nanomaterials in the aquatic environment was evaluated testing them at sub-lethal doses on the predatory copepod Mesocyclops aspericornis. Cigarette butt-synthesized Ag nanos

Managing risks of noncancer health effects at hazardous waste sites: A case study using the Reference Concentration (RfC) of trichloroethylene (TCE).

A method for determining a safety range for non-cancer risks is proposed, similar in concept to the range used for cancer in the management of waste sites. This safety range brings transparency to the chemical specific Reference Dose or Concentration by replacing their "order of magnitude" definitions with a scientifically-based range. EPA's multiple RfCs for trichloroethylene (TCE) were evaluated as a case study. For TCE, a multi-endpoint safety range was judged to be 3 μg/m(3) to 30 μg/m,(3) based on a review of kidney effects found in NTP (1988), thymus effects found in Keil et al. (2009) a

Management of protein-energy wasting in non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease: reconciling low protein intake with nutritional therapy.

Protein-energy wasting (PEW), characterized by a decline in body protein mass and energy reserves, including muscle and fat wasting and visceral protein pool contraction, is an underappreciated condition in early to moderate stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and a strong predictor of adverse outcomes. The prevalence of PEW in early to moderate CKD is ≥20-25% and increases as CKD progresses, in part because of activation of proinflammatory cytokines combined with superimposed hypercatabolic states and declines in appetite. This anorexia leads to inadequate protein and energy intake, which

Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors and Management of Refractory Hypomagnesemia Without Overt Urinary Magnesium Wasting: A Report of 2 Cases.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor have become widely used in patients with diabetes, heart failure, and kidney disease to improve clinical outcomes and diminish hospitalizations. They have also been associated with increased serum magnesium levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. The use of SGLT2 inhibitors resulted in improved magnesium homeostasis in a series of patients with refractory hypomagnesemia with urinary magnesium wasting. However, the role of SLGT2 inhibitors in patients with hypomagnesemia without urinary magnesium wasting remains unexplored. We report 2 cases wit

Interdisciplinary management of FGF23-related phosphate wasting syndromes: a Consensus Statement on the evaluation, diagnosis and care of patients with X-linked hypophosphataemia.

X-linked hypophosphataemia (XLH) is the most frequent cause of hypophosphataemia-associated rickets of genetic origin and is associated with high levels of the phosphaturic hormone fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). In addition to rickets and osteomalacia, patients with XLH have a heavy disease burden with enthesopathies, osteoarthritis, pseudofractures and dental complications, all of which contribute to reduced quality of life. This Consensus Statement presents the outcomes of a working group of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musc

COMPARISON OF CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE DETECTION METHODS AND PROCEDURES: IMPLICATIONS FOR FREE-RANGING WHITE-TAILED DEER (ODOCOILEUS VIRGINIANUS) SURVEILLANCE AND MANAGEMENT.

Throughout North America, chronic wasting disease (CWD) has emerged as perhaps the greatest threat to wild cervid populations, including white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus). White-tailed deer are the most sought-after big game species across North America with populations of various subspecies in nearly all Canadian provinces, the contiguous US, and Mexico. Documented CWD cases have dramatically increased across the WTD range since the mid-1990s, including in Minnesota, US. CWD surveillance in free-ranging WTD and other cervid populations mainly depends upon immunodetection methods

A Rare Cause of Neonatal Salt Wasting Syndrome: Clinical Management of a Case Diagnosed with Pseudohypoaldosteronism due to a Novel Homozygous Variant in the SCNN1B Gene.

Pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA) is a rare disorder that, if not promptly recognized and treated, can lead to life-threatening hyperkalemia resulting in cardiac arrest and death. Systemic PHA is caused by variants that deactivate the epithelial sodium channel subunits. Management is challenging due to high-dose oral replacement therapy, and patients with systemic PHA require lifelong treatment. Here, we present the clinical course of a newborn diagnosed with PHA at seven days of age due to severe dehydration, inadequate feeding, vomiting, and lethargy. The infant was found to be homozygous for th

Mapping the zoonotic interface: a cross-sectional study of One Health waste management knowledge and attitudes among urban livestock keepers in the Dodoma region, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic diseases pose a significant public health threat, particularly in urbanising areas of low- and middle-income countries like Tanzania, where informal livestock keeping overlaps with inadequate waste management practices. Livestock keepers' knowledge and attitudes toward zoonotic waste management are crucial for preventing disease transmission within a One Health framework, yet these aspects remain underexplored in rapidly growing cities such as Dodoma Urban. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed knowledge and attitudes regarding zoonotic waste management among livestock keepers i

Assessment of medical waste generation, associated environmental impact, and management issues after the outbreak of COVID-19: A case study of the Hubei Province in China.

COVID-19 greatly challenges the human health sector, and has resulted in a large amount of medical waste that poses various potential threats to the environment. In this study, we compiled relevant data released by official agencies and the media, and conducted data supplementation based on earlier studies to calculate the net value of medical waste produced in the Hubei Province due to COVID-19 with the help of a neural network model. Next, we reviewed the data related to the environmental impact of medical waste per unit and designed four scenarios to estimate the environmental impact of new

Behavioral interventions related to plastic waste management in low-and middle-income countries: a systematic review using the behavior change wheel and the theoretical domains framework.

Addressing the mounting plastic waste problem requires system-level solutions, along with interventions that promote behavioral change. In low-resource countries, inadequate, if not absent, waste management systems lead to unsafe disposal practices, including open burning. While theory-informed approaches are essential for identifying enablers and barriers to target behavior change, their application is limited in these settings. Given the lack of a theory-driven synthesis of behavioral strategies to address plastic waste, this systematic review aimed to: (1) synthesize behavioral intervention

A participatory geographic information system-based route optimisation for decentralised municipal solid waste management system: A case study from a flood-prone town in Kerala, India.

Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) remains a critical challenge in India due to rapid urbanisation, increasing waste volumes, and limited institutional capacity. Although urban local bodies (ULBs) allocate up to 80% of their MSWM budgets to collection and transport, inefficiencies persist due to unoptimised routes and poor alignment with local conditions. Most geographic information system (GIS)-based optimisation models remain top-down, failing to reflect on-the-ground realities and are rarely implementable. This study presents a participatory GIS-based routing methodology for decentrali

A review on sustainable management of hazardous, non-hazardous, and chemo-waste in the pharmaceutical sector and its correlation with UNSDGs 3, 6, 9, and 11-15.

The pharmaceutical industry significantly contributes to healthcare advancements and the global economy, generating approximately $50 billion annually. However, it also produces around 200,000 tons of pharmaceutical waste per year, including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and chemical by-products, which pose serious environmental and health risks. India, a major pharmaceutical producer, exports 40% of the world's generic drugs but struggles to manage an estimated 50,000 tons of pharmaceutical waste annually. Current waste management practices remain insufficient, with only 30% of pha
