Cerebral salt wasting syndrome in a child with central diabetes insipidus following surgery for recurrent craniopharyngioma: A case report.

Surgical treatment of craniopharyngiomas in children can produce disorders related to water and sodium such as central diabetes insipidus (CDI) and cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS). The combination of both in children is unusually reported in the literature and is associated with high mortality. The management of CSWS is based on fluid therapy. Fludrocortisone is useful in children with CSWS who do not respond to fluid management. The objective of the paper is to describe the case of 6 years and 10 months old male child with hypopituitarism secondary to a craniopharyngioma surgery perform

A Probable Association of Aseptic Meningoencephalitis, Complicated With Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome Following COVID-19 Vaccination: A Case Report.

Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) occurred worldwide, and it affected millions of people around the world and killed millions of lives without a definitive treatment. During this challenging time, vaccine production has been hugely carried out leading to the invention of many vaccines against COVID-19. As any vaccine can have some side effects, COVID-19 vaccines also need surveillance and reporting side effects worldwide. Currently, more than 10 vaccines are available against SARS-CoV-2 infection globally. Ther

Coexistence of Triphasic Diabetes Insipidus and Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome Following Extraction of Sellar/Suprasellar Grade I Pilocytic Astrocytoma.

Water homeostasis disorders, such as syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), diabetes insipidus (DI), and cerebral salt-wasting syndrome (CSWS), can develop after neurosurgery. Additionally, DI, SIADH, and CSWS have been reported concurrently in association with some neurosurgical conditions, in particular after pituitary gland surgery or as sequelae of post-traumatic brain injury. Therefore, neurosurgeons should expect water homeostasis disorders after the removal of tumors of the sellar/suprasellar region and be prepared to aggressively manage them.

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome induced after experimental inoculation of cesarean-derived, colostrum-deprived piglets with type 2 porcine circovirus.

Cesarean-derived, colostrum-deprived pigs (n = 23) were inoculated intranasally and subcutaneously with a low cell culture passage of type 2 porcine circovirus. In 11 pigs, a persistent fever that lasted 7-17 days began 12-15 days after inoculation with virus. Additional signs of disease in those 11 pigs included depression (11 of 11 pigs), palpable enlargement of inguinal, prefemoral, and popliteal lymph nodes (11 of 11), icterus (6 of 11), and hyperpnea (2 of 11). The remaining 12 pigs had fever that occurred intermittently for 2-4 days between days 12 and 20 postinoculation. Overt signs of

Differential diagnosis between syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion and cerebral/renal salt wasting syndrome in children over 1 year: proposal for a simple algorithm.

Hyponatremia, especially if acute and severe, can be a life-threatening condition. Several conditions can trigger hyponatremia. In this review, we will discuss two conditions that can determine euvolemic hyponatremia: the cerebral/renal salt wasting (CRSW) syndrome and the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), including the two subtypes: reset osmostat (RO) and nephrogenic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (NSIAD) and their differential diagnoses. Despite the passage of over 70 years since its first description, to date, the true etiopathogenesis of CRSW syn

Effect of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor on post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome in porcine circovirus type-2-transfected piglets.

Post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is a complex disease syndrome in swine, affecting nursery and fattening pigs. Although ongoing evidence suggests that porcine circovirus type-2 (PCV2) is the causal agent of PMWS, the host immune system appears to have a crucial role in the PMWS pathogenesis of PCV2-affected pigs. Owing to difficulties in producing a biologically pure form of PCV2 devoid of the other viral agents commonly present in swine tissues, we decided to use a tandem-cloned PCV2 DNA providing highly pure grade reagent in order to monitor the virulence of PCV2 alone or w

Pathogenesis of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome reproduced by co-infection with Korean isolates of porcine circovirus 2 and porcine parvovirus.

Thirty-two colostrum-deprived conventional pigs aged 28 days were co-infected with Korean isolates of porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) and porcine parvovirus (PPV) and observed for up to 35 days post-inoculation (dpi). Histopathologically, granulomatous inflammation, with or without intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies, was present in lymphoid tissues (e.g., lymph nodes, thymus, spleen and tonsil) from 20 dpi, being most severe at 24 dpi. PCV2 and PPV DNA were detected in the lymph nodes from 3 to 35 dpi by in-situ hybridization, but the labelling for both viruses was particularly intense and widespre

Hyponatremia in the postoperative craniofacial pediatric patient population: a connection to cerebral salt wasting syndrome and management of the disorder.

Hyponatremia after cranial vault remodeling has been noted in a pediatric patient population. If left untreated, the patients may develop a clinical hypoosmotic condition that can lead to cerebral edema, increased intracranial pressure, and eventually, to central nervous system and circulatory compromise. The hyponatremia has traditionally been attributed to the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH); however, in our patients the treatment has been resuscitation with normal saline as opposed to fluid restriction (the accepted treatment of SIADH), thus placing the d

Wasting in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome is associated with multiple defects in the serum insulin-like growth factor system.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this investigation was to characterize the GH-IGF axis of patients with AIDS associated wasting. A special emphasis was placed on determining whether IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs) of patients who have lost more than 10% of their ideal body mass are structurally different from the IGFBPs of patients with no weight loss. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: A cross-sectional study of 11 AIDS patients was performed to determine whether the IGF system is abnormal in AIDS patients with wasting. Seven additional AIDS patients were followed longitudinally to determine whether AIDS patients exp

Loss of lean body and muscle mass correlates with androgen levels in hypogonadal men with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and wasting.

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) wasting syndrome (AWS) is a devastating complication of human immunodeficiency virus infection characterized by a disproportionate decrease in lean body mass. The pathogenesis of the AWS is unknown, but recent data suggest that endogenous secretion of the potent anabolic hormone, testosterone; is decreased in 30-50% of men with AIDS. However, it is unknown whether decreased androgen levels are associated with decreased lean body mass and/or functional decreases in muscle strength and aerobic capacity in hypogonadal men with the AWS. In addition, te

Evaluated the immune efficacy of a bivalent inactivated vaccine against post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome and mycoplasmal pneumonia of swine.

PMWS and MPS are severe respiratory diseases in piglets, causing developmental disorders and significant economic losses. The conventional approach to control these diseases relies on separate immunization with individual vaccines, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and may induce stress reactions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immune efficacy of a bivalent inactivated vaccine containing the clinically isolated Mhp Q strain and purified PCV2 Cap VLPs. Thirty-five Changbai piglets were randomly divided into seven groups (n = 5, per group): A (bivalent inactivated vaccine with

Cisplatin-induced Severe Renal Salt-wasting Syndrome Complicated with Hypovolemic Shock and Various Electrolyte Abnormalities in a Patient with Thymoma.

Renal salt-wasting syndrome (RSWS) induced by cisplatin causes hyponatremia and dehydration. A 75-year-old woman with thymoma underwent cisplatin chemotherapy. She presented with hypovolemic shock, seizures, and impaired consciousness (Japan Coma Scale II-30) with a decreased serum sodium level of 116 mmol/L on day 9. In addition, the patient had hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia, and hypophosphatemia. We herein describe the first reported case of RSWS complicated by hypovolemic shock. This is the second reported case with multiple electrolyte abnormalities. Thus, we should recognize t

Renal magnesium wasting in a patient with short bowel syndrome with magnesium deficiency: effect of 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 treatment.

We studied a patient with severe hypomagnesemia due to small bowel resection who had marked renal magnesium (Mg) loss in response to iv Mg infusion. She had an undetectable serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25-(OH)2D] level before treatment. Although Mg infusion increased her serum Mg levels and enhanced renal PTH action, as evidenced by an elevation in nephrogenous cAMP, the serum 1,25-(OH)2D level remained low. After the administration of 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3, her serum 1,25-(OH)2D level increased, and fractional excretion of Mg decreased. With the elevation in serum 1,25-(OH)2D, serum M

[Successful treatment for cryptococcal meningoencephalitis complicated by cerebral salt-wasting syndrome in a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: A clinical case].

Cryptococcus neoformans is a common agent of fungal meningoencephalitis in immunocompromised patients. Cerebral salt-wasting syndrome is one of the rare causes of severe hyponatremia in patients with CNS diseases. The paper describes the first clinical case of a patient, whose onset of chronic lymphocytic leukemia was complicated by cryptococcal meningoencephalitis presenting with mental disorders and severe electrolytic imbalance. Antifungal treatment with amphotericin B and fluconazole could alleviate an infectious process and metabolic disturbances.

Distribution of porcine parvovirus in porcine circovirus 2-infected pigs with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome as shown by in-situ hybridization.

In-situ hybridization with a nonradioactive digoxigenin-labelled probe was used to study the distribution of porcine parvovirus (PPV) in formalin-fixed paraffin wax-embedded tissues from 10 porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2)-infected weaned pigs with naturally occurring postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). A 226 base pair DNA fragment from a VP2 structural gene was generated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and used as a probe. Lymph node, spleen, thymus and tonsil were positive by PCR, demonstrating the presence of PPV DNA in the tissue samples from four of 10 pigs tested. PPV nuclei

Reduction of Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome-Associated Clinical Symptoms by Virus-Like Particle Vaccine Against Porcine Parvovirus and Porcine Circovirus Type 2.

The porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) capsid (Cap) protein and porcine parvovirus (PPV) VP2 protein have been studied in vaccines to control postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). Virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines are nonreplicative vectors that deliver epitopes and induce immune responses. However, most VLP vaccines are recombinant proteins expressed in eukaryotic systems and are expensive and complex. In this study, the full-length PCV2-Cap and PPV-VP2 proteins were expressed in Escherichia coli, which self-assembled into VLPs. The highly soluble proteins were purified using Ni-c
