Kinetic and physicochemical modeling of β-galactosidase from Rhynchophorus palmarum larvae.

Palm weevil (Rhynchophorus palmarum L.) is a significant pest that has been identified as a threat to palm trees in tropical regions. Beyond its agricultural impact, its digestive system represents a promising source of biocatalysts. The present study investigates the catalytic activity of β-galactosidase extracted from the digestive juice of R. palmarum larvae. o-nitrophenyl-β-D-galactopyranoside (oNPG) was utilized as the substrate in this investigation. The purified enzyme exhibited optimal activity at 330.0 ± 1.2 K and pH = 5.0 ± 0.1, as determined by empirical and mechanistic models. The

Integrating olfactory and visual cues for trap-based monitoring of the tropical nut borer, Hypothenemus obscurus (F.) (Coleoptera: Scolytinae), a key pest of macadamia in Hawaii.

The tropical nut borer, Hypothenemus obscurus (F.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is a significant economic pest in Hawaii's macadamia orchards, contributing to substantial pre- and postharvest losses. Existing management strategies relying on cultural controls and generalist predators have been proven inefficient. This study developed and evaluated a trap-based monitoring system integrating both olfactory and visual cues to improve pest monitoring and management for H. obscurus. Field trials conducted over 2 yr assessed various alcohol-based lure formulations and trap color preferen

Push-pull strategy that combines olfactory and visual cues for management of ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) in avocado.

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) pose a significant threat to avocado production primarily because they serve as vectors for Harringtonia lauricola (T.C. Harr., Fraedrich & Aghayeva) Z.W. de Beer & M. Procter, the fungal pathogen responsible for laurel wilt disease. Unfortunately, effective strategies for managing either the pathogen or its beetle vectors remain limited. To address this challenge, we investigated behavioral manipulation as a potential tool for managing vector populations. First, we assessed the effectiveness of combining visual and olfa

Insecticidal activity of Thymus pallescens de Noë and Cymbogon citratus essential oils against Sitophilus zeamais and Tribolium castaneum.

The thrust of the study was to determine the chemical composition of the essential oils extracted from Thymus pallescens de Noé and Cymbogon citratus Stapf. as well as to evaluate their efficacy in controlling Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) in either single or combined populations. Carvacrol (56.04%) and geraniol (20.86%) were identified as the major constituents of T. pallescens and C. citratus respectively. The tested essential oils showed pronounced insecticidal activity against the pest species in relation with the applied doses. T. pallescens EO had the hi

Community of Bark and Ambrosia Beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) Infesting Brazilian Peppertree Treated With Herbicide and the Volatile Tree Response.

Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (Anacardiaceae), is one of the most invasive weeds of natural and agricultural areas of Florida, Hawaii, and Texas (USA). Herbicides are the main tool used to manage populations of this weed. Faunal inventories of the insects associated with invasive populations of the weed have mostly listed leaf-feeding phytophagous, pollinator, or predacious species. Among these, bark and ambrosia beetles were collected only once from S. terebinthifolia in the invaded range and there are no reports from the native range. A diverse assemblage of bark and am

Euwallacea perbrevis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), a confirmed pest on Acacia crassicarpa in Riau, Indonesia, and a new fungal symbiont; Fusarium rekanum sp. nov.

Non-native Acacia plantations in Indonesia were first reported to be infested by a native ambrosia beetle species, identified as Euwallacea fornicatus in 1993. Recently the level of infestation in these plantations by ambrosia beetles has steadily increased. The recent redefinition of the taxonomic parameters of the Euwallacea fornicatus species complex has resulted in the identity of the ambrosia beetle species in these plantations becoming unclear. This is also true for their obligate fungal associates. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the ambrosia beetle species, as well as

Southern Pine Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Pheromone Component trans-Verbenol: Enantiomeric Specificity and Potential as a Lure Adjuvant.

The southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) utilizes a multi-component aggregation pheromone to mediate mass-attacks and thereby colonize otherwise unsusceptible trees. Females produce the attractant frontalin and a synergist, trans-verbenol. We investigated trans-verbenol to determine whether enantiomeric composition, airborne concentration, and possibly other factors might affect its biological activity. Newly-emerged females from Mississippi populations produced 54-87% of the (-)-enantiomer; females initiating galleries in logs produce

Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Repel Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae).

The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bb) is used to control the red palm weevil (RPW) Rhyncophorus ferrugineus (Oliver). Beuveria bassiana can infect and kill all developmental stages of RPW. We found that a solid formulate of B. bassiana isolate 203 (Bb203; CBS 121097), obtained from naturally infected RPW adults, repels RPW females. Fungi, and entomopathogens in particular, can produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs from Bb203 were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). GC-MS identified more than 15 VOCs in B. bassiana not present in uninoculated (co

Assessing organic chemical management strategies for Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Prostephanus truncatus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) at food facilities.

There is an increasing demand for organically certified practices throughout the postharvest supply chain. Yet, evaluating mortality and sublethal effects from organic chemical control options have received less attention. Thus, the aims of this study were to evaluate the direct mortality and changes in mobility of Prostephanus truncatus and Sitophilus zeamais when using (i) fresh residues or (ii) 7-mo-aged residues on maize from a suite of organically approved grain protectants (3 formulations of 5% pyrethrins, or 8.66% spinosad) compared to a conventional insecticide (4.75% deltamethrin) and

Large-scale importance of bark beetle outbreaks for standing deadwood and woodpeckers.

Resource pulses associated with forest disturbances can significantly influence biological communities, with interacting and sometimes lagged effects on species numbers. Among the most common disturbances in temperate forests are bark beetle outbreaks, which represent a resource pulse and initiate additional resource pulses of other insects and of deadwood. Moreover, bark beetle outbreaks are often followed by changes in habitat conditions due to canopy cover loss or salvage logging that can have contrasting effects on co-occurring forest species. However, the effects of this multi-resource pu

Salinity-mediated cyanogenesis in white clover (Trifolium repens) affects trophic interactions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Increasing soil salinity poses a major plant stress in agro-ecosystems worldwide. Surprisingly little is known about the quantitative effect of elevated salinity on secondary metabolism in many agricultural crops. Such salt-mediated changes in defence-associated compounds may significantly alter the quality of food and forage plants as well as their resistance against pests. In the present study, the effects of soil salinity on cyanogenesis in white clover (Trifolium repens), a forage crop of international importance, are analysed. METHODS: Experimental clonal plants were

Chemical composition and insecticidal potential of botanical fractionation extracts for the management of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, 1855 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in stored maize.

The weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky, 1855) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a destructive pest of stored maize, particularly in warm and humid tropical regions. The objective of this study was to analyze the chemical composition and evaluate the insecticidal potential of fractionated extracts of Eucalyptus globulus, Tagetes minuta and Annona squamosa used as natural alternatives to synthetic insecticides in the management of S. zeamais. Fractionated extracts were obtained by macerating and soaking E. globulus leaves, whole T. minuta plants and A. squmosa seeds using hexane, chloroform, an

The In Vitro and In Vivo Fungal Volatile Organic Compounds Associated with Rapid 'Ōhi'a Death and the Response of Xyleborine Ambrosia Beetles to those Compounds.

Rapid 'ōhi'a death (ROD), caused by fungal pathogens Ceratocystis lukuohia and Ceratocystis huliohia, is devastating 'ōhi'a (Metrosideros polymorpha), the keystone forest tree species of Hawai'i. Ceratocystidaceae fungi produce fruity volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and sticky sexual spores, suggesting they are adapted for insect dispersal. In this study, we explored chemical signaling of the causal agents of the ROD disease complex and how those VOCs mediate ambrosia beetle (Coleoptera: Curculiondiae: Scolytidae)-plant interactions. Four species of ambrosia beetles (Xyleborinus saxesenii, X

Predicting potential distribution of the Rhinoncus sibiricus under climatic in China using MaxEnt.

In recent years, buckwheat (Fagopyrum spp.) is being increasingly damaged by the Siberian tortoise beetle (Rhinoncus sibiricus Faust). Adults and nymphs feed on leaf tissues and caulicles, thus damaging its stems and leaves. In this study, we investigated the habits, distribution, and environmental impact of R. sibiricus using MaxEnt, an ecological niche model. Geographic information about the infestation site from previous field surveys and climatic data from 2013 to 2018 were organized and optimized using R. The impact factors were calculated using MaxEnt software. The results indicate that

Globally distributed Xyleborus species reveal recurrent intercontinental dispersal in a landscape of ancient worldwide distributions.

BACKGROUND: Invasive species can have devastating effects on native ecosystems and therefore impose a significant threat to human welfare. The introduction rate of invasive species has accelerated dramatically in recent times due to human activity (anthropogenic effects), with a steadily growing pool of widespread tramp species. We present an in-depth analysis of four pantropical species of Xyleborus ambrosia beetles (Xyleborus volvulus, Xyleborus perforans, Xyleborus ferrugineus, and Xyleborus affinis) with similar ecology (fungus cultivation in dead wood), reproductive biology (permanent inb

Bruchid (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) ovicidal phenylbutanoid from Zingiber purpureum.

The larvicidal activity of the dichloromethane extract of Zingiber purpureum Roscoe (Zingiberaceae) rhizome against the second instar of Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) is shown to be due to 4-(3',4'-dimethoxyphenyl)buta-1,3-diene. The diene also showed ovicidal activity against the bruchid Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). Most of the eggs laid by bruchids on treated cowpea seeds were transparent, and very few of them contained developing embryos. The few larvae produced from these embryos were unable to penetrate the seed coat and enter the seed. Similar effects

Diurnal Activity Patterns of Elaeidobius Pollinators on Oil Palm Female Inflorescences in Côte d'Ivoire.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) production in Côte d'Ivoire depends on insect-mediated pollination by Elaeidobius weevils. From October 2011 to November 2013, we monitored 432 female inflorescences in three major production zones (La Mé, Grand Béréby, and Iboké). Each month, visits by E. kamerunicus, E. plagiatus, E. singularis, and E. subvittatus were recorded on the day of full anthesis during three discrete time periods (09:00-10:00, 11:00-12:00, and 16:00-17:00). Temperature and relative humidity were measured concurrently. Visitation peaked at 11:00 across sites, with abundance ~4-fold
