Multiple Spatial Spectral Components of Static Skin Deformation for Predicting Macroscopic Roughness Perception.

A previous study suggested a relationship between the spatial spectrum of finger pad skin deformation and perception of macroscopic roughness features. This study tested a new hypothesis that macroscopic roughness perception is the result of a weighted linear combination of multiple spatial spectral components of skin deformation. Experiments were conducted by capturing close-up images of finger pad deformation while the pads were pushed onto specimens with macroscopic features. Additionally, the roughness perceptions of these specimens were collected using a magnitude estimation method. The c

Object Detection in Adverse Weather for Autonomous Driving through Data Merging and YOLOv8.

For autonomous driving, perception is a primary and essential element that fundamentally deals with the insight into the ego vehicle's environment through sensors. Perception is challenging, wherein it suffers from dynamic objects and continuous environmental changes. The issue grows worse due to interrupting the quality of perception via adverse weather such as snow, rain, fog, night light, sand storms, strong daylight, etc. In this work, we have tried to improve camera-based perception accuracy, such as autonomous-driving-related object detection in adverse weather. We proposed the improveme

Actual Body Weight and the Parent's Perspective of Child's Body Weight Among Canadian First Nations Children.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Indigenous children in Canada face higher rates of overweight and obesity compared to non-Indigenous children. Parents' perceptions of their child's body weight are shaped by broader systemic influences, including historical trauma and limited access to healthy food. This study aimed to evaluate the association between children's actual body weight (measured by BMI) and parental perceptions among First Nations children. METHODS: Participants were children from two Saskatchewan First Nations communities involved in the First Nations Lung Health Project (2013 and 2017). S

Vapor-phase-reduction-assisted solid-state compensation enables intrinsic self-decoupled dual-modal sensing in copper-coordinated cellulose fibers.

Fiber electronics are emerging as key building blocks for intelligent robotic systems, yet reliable multimodal signal decoupling remains elusive because stochastic interfacial polymerization produces structurally heterogeneous conductive networks that intrinsically couple electrical responses. Here, an in-situ vapor-phase-reduction-assisted solid-state compensation strategy is developed to establish robust interfacial anchoring in flexible woven copper-coordinated cellulose fibers, enabling intrinsic decoupling of piezoresistive and piezocapacitive responses, with a high conductivity of 445.5

Hunger and satiety perception in patients with severe anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVES: Appetite is a subjective essential sense. In patients with severe anorexia nervosa (AN), controversy remains whether this sensation is altered. The objectives were to clarify, in patients with severe AN: (1) Whether the appetite changes during partial weight restoration, (2) Whether potential changes in appetite are related to (i) diagnostic subtype of AN, (ii) psychopharmacological treatment, (iii) disease duration, (iv) duration of hospitalization, and (v) baseline body mass index (BMI). METHODS: The study consisted of 39 patients, with a mean age of 23.7 ± 8 and an admission me

Sensory nutrition of sweet taste. Physiological, pathophysiological and pharmacological implications of T1R2/T1R3 signalling pathways on energy (glucose) and body weight homeostasis.

Taste perception plays a key role in food chose. Both taste receptors type 1 member 2 (T1R2) and member 3 (T1R3) are responsible for detecting mono- and disaccharides, and sweet taste perception is dependent of the recognition threshold (RT) of these molecules. Differences in sweet RT are mainly attributed to polymorphisms of T1R2 and T1R3 as well as their expression in taste buds, which are regulated by several hormones including glucagon, ghrelins, glucagon-like peptide, leptins and endocannabinoids. Interestingly, aging, diabetes and obesity are characterized by significant changes in sweet

Comparing object lifting kinematics and the size-weight illusion between physical reality and virtual reality.

This study compared the size-weight illusion (SWI) and object lifting kinematics between physical and virtual conditions, shedding light on the nuanced disparities in perception and action across different environmental mediums. We examined whether prior expectations about object weight based on size cues, which affect the experience of real-world object interactions, are different in virtual reality (VR). Employing a highly realistic virtual environment with precisely matched visual size and haptic cues, we tested the hypothesis that VR, which may be experienced as uncertain, unfamiliar, or u

[Texture perception and masticatory function in individuals with high and normal body mass index].

UNLABELLED: Food choice is a critical factor contributing to the rise of obesity. Sensory perception, combined with environmental influences, plays a pivotal role in shaping dietary preferences, often favoring foods that provide pleasure rather than health benefits. Individuals with overweight or obesity experience alterations in sensory perception, including decreased sensitivity of taste receptors and delayed gustatory cortex activation, which affect food selection and predisposition to weight gain. Food texture, perceived via multiple sensory modalities, regulates chewing behavior, salivati

[Effects of individual features on the measurement of vibration perception thresholds: standard setting for healthy people].

The thresholds of vibration perception in healthy people may differ significantly depending on individual and constitutional features: age, weight, height, race and gender, and also on various addictions like smoking or alcohol abuse. These variables have not as yet been analyzed in setting Polish standards of vibration perception thresholds used for therapeutical and certification purposes. The aim of the study was to develop a model that could render it possible to assess the normative values of vibration perception, taking account of individual features. The study covered 187 healthy person

Does intervention with GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide modulate perception of sweet taste in women with obesity: study protocol of a randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies demonstrated that glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is locally synthesized in taste bud cells and that GLP-1 receptor exists on the gustatory nerves in close proximity to GLP-1-containing taste bud cells. This local paracrine GLP-1 signalling seems to be specifically involved in the perception of sweets. However, the role of GLP-1 in taste perception remains largely unaddressed in clinical studies. Whether any weight-reducing effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists are mediated through the modulation of taste perception is currently unknown. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This

Visual-motor deficits relate to altered gray and white matter in young adults born preterm with very low birth weight.

Individuals born preterm and at very low birth weight (birth weight ≤ 1500 g) are at an increased risk of perinatal brain injury and neurodevelopmental deficits over the long term. This study examined whether this clinical group has more problems with visual-motor integration, motor coordination, and visual perception compared to term-born controls, and related these findings to cortical surface area and thickness and white matter fractional anisotropy. Forty-seven preterm-born very low birth weight individuals and 56 term-born controls were examined at 18-22 years of age with a combined cogni

A comparison of perceived and calculated weight status classification congruence between pre- and post-bariatric surgery patients.

BACKGROUND: One prominent reason patients undergo bariatric surgery is to reduce their excess weight and body mass index. Weight status classifications (WSCs), based on calculated body mass index, organize patients into distinct groups (underweight, healthy weight, overweight, class I obesity, class II obesity, and class III obesity) for treatment recommendations, including surgery for patients with obesity. Bariatric patients' perceptions of their WSC is important to consider, because patients who accurately perceive their WSC presurgery have greater motivation for health behavior changes; al

Weight Bias 2.0: The Effect of Perceived Weight Change on Performance Evaluation and the Moderating Role of Anti-fat Bias.

Overweight employees are viewed as lazy, slow, inactive, and even incapable. Even if such attributes are false, this perspective can seriously undermine others' evaluation of their work performance. The current study explores a broader phenomenon of weight bias that has an effect on weight change. In a longitudinal study with a time lag of 6 months, we surveyed 226 supervisor-employee dyads. We found supervisor perceptions of employee weight change notably altered their evaluation of the employee performance from Time 1, especially following low vs. high Time-1 performance evaluation. Perceptions of overweight in a Caribbean population: the role of health professionals.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity and its complications is particularly high in the Caribbean. Underestimation of weight status could explain the failure by subjects concerned to adopt behaviours complying with medical recommendations. Little research is available on the role of health professionals in overweight perception. OBJECTIVE: To examine relationships between overweight underestimation and lack of communication on overweight diagnosis by health professionals in a multicultural Caribbean population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study, lead in 2014 on a sample representative of the
