Removal of heavy metals in a horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetland.

Constructed wetlands with horizontal sub-surface flow designed for the treatment of municipal sewage have been monitored extensively with respect to removal of organics (BOD5, COD), suspended solids, nutrients (N, P) and microbial pollution. However, the information on the removal and distribution of heavy and other metals in these systems are very limited because heavy metals do not constitute a major problem in wastewater from small villages with no industry. The measurements were carried out in a constructed wetland with sub-surface flow at Morina near Prague. Removal of metals in construct

Pesticide retention in the watershed and in a small constructed wetland treating diffuse pollution.

Loss of pesticides is likely from watersheds where pesticides are used. The herbicides propachlor, linuron and metamitron, and the fungicides propiconazole, fenpropimorph and metribuzin and metalaxyl, were applied on an arable soil plot. A mass balance study showed that approximately 96% of the applied pesticides disappeared within the watershed. Three pesticides remained as residuals in the soil profile one year after the application. The 4% of the pesticides that were lost from the watershed gave peak concentrations, appearing immediately after spraying, reaching levels that can be hazardous

Plant-driven microbiome reorganization sustains multifunctionality of iron-biochar constructed wetlands under chronic PFOA exposure.

Plant capacity to regulate treatment stability and ecological function of iron-biochar (IC) based constructed wetlands (CWs) operated under long-term PFOA exposure remains insufficiently understood. In this study, compared with unplanted system, plant (Iris pseudacorus) increased the dynamic transformation of ammonium and nitrate, limited nitrite accumulation, thus promoting total nitrogen removal, which was, on average, 12.54% higher in planted system. Besides, vegetation increased total phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency by 14.21% and 7.97% on average. These improvement

Research progress on the application of manganese oxides in constructed wetlands: Efficiency, mechanisms, and prospects.

As an eco-friendly wastewater treatment technology, constructed wetlands (CWs) hold significant application value in pollutant removal. Manganese oxides (MnOx) have emerged as a frontier research focus for CW substrate materials due to their unique redox properties, outstanding adsorption capacity, and remarkable catalytic activity. The fundamental physicochemical properties, sourcing pathways, and modification optimization strategies of MnOx substrates are reviewed. The removal efficacy and mechanisms of MnOx in CWs for organic contaminants, nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals, are specifi

Design parameters and electrical conductivity shape dissolved organic matter aromaticity in full-scale constructed wetlands.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) often serve as final polishing systems before wastewater enters receiving waters, where active biogeochemical reactions can reshape dissolved organic matter (DOM) and influence various ecological processes in downstream aquatic systems. However, DOM variations and their associated factors in full-scale CWs remain poorly constrained. Combining a field survey of 57 sites across 14 full-scale CWs in Shandong, China, with laboratory experiments, this study examined changes in DOM characteristics, the key factors associated with these changes, and their potential roles. Identification of a new Sarcocystis sp. in marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) from wetlands of Argentina.

The marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) is the largest South American native deer species and is listed as "Vulnerable" by IUCN due to the population reduction. As part of a conservation and disease surveillance program, muscle samples from 14 marsh deer found dead in 2016 and 2017 in northeast Argentina were obtained at necropsy. Samples from each animal were processed as pooled muscles (heart, diaphragm, tongue and hindlimb) by homogenization and direct microscopical observation to detect intracellular Sarcocystis spp. cysts. Sarcocysts were observed in six samples, and several cysts recover

Microbe-mediated simultaneous nitrogen reduction and sulfamethoxazole/N-acetylsulfamethoxazole removal in lab-scale constructed wetlands.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are increasingly used to treat complex pollution such as nitrogen and emerging organic micropollutants from anthropogenic sources. In this study, the denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, and nitrous oxide release rates following exposure to the frequently detected sulfonamides sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and its human metabolite, N-acetylsulfamethoxazole (N-SMX), were investigated in lab-scale CWs. Over a period of 190 d, the denitrification rates were noticeably inhibited in the SMX and N-SMX groups at week 5. Subseq

Removal of selected sulfonamides and sulfonamide resistance genes from wastewater in full-scale constructed wetlands.

Sulfonamides are high-consumption antibiotics that reach the aquatic environment. The threat related to their presence in wastewater and the environment is not only associated with their antibacterial properties, but also with risk of the spread of drug resistance in bacteria. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the occurrence of eight commonly used sulfonamides, sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1-3) and integrase genes intI1-3 in five full-scale constructed wetlands (CWs) differing in design (including hybrid systems) and in the source of wastewater (agricultural drainage, domesti

Microbial communities responded to tetracyclines and Cu(II) in constructed wetlands microcosms with Myriophyllum aquaticum.

Combined antibiotic and heavy metal pollution has generated considerable concern. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been shown to efficiently remove pollutants; however, the microbial community responses to combined pollutants remain enigmatic. In this study, seven microcosm CWs were planted with Myriophyllum aquaticum, spiked with tetracyclines (TCs) (300-30,000 μg/L), alone or with Cu(II), to investigate the response of plant-associated microbial communities. TCs and the Cu/TC ratio greatly affected the performance of CWs. Tetracyclines led to higher microbial diversity, evenness and richness,

Emulating natural wetlands oxygen conditions for the removal of N and P in agricultural wastewaters.

The aim of this research was to evaluate a constructed wetland system (CW) operated under aerobic-anoxic-aerobic conditions to remove C, N and P from water with high concentrations of the last two nutrients. A series of three CW were operated continuously for 190 days. An aerobic vertical CW was used in the first and third stages and an anoxic horizontal CW was used in the second stage. The total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency was 70 ± 1.5%. Similar removal efficiency behavior was observed in others nitrogen compounds, where a removal of 85 ± 1.5% for NO3--N and 97 ± 2.2% for NH3+N were achi

Intensified nutrients removal in constructed wetlands by integrated Tubifex tubifex and mussels: Performance and mechanisms.

The synergy of Tubifex tubifex (T. tubifex) and mussels on SFCWs (named SFCW-MT) performance was well studied in laboratory throughout a year. The SFCW-MT were steady operated with high TN and TP treatment, with the removal efficiencies of 37.85 ± 5.22% and 39.26 ± 5.20% even in winter. The mussels had excellent NH4-N removal efficiency, and avoid the shortage of NH4-N removal with T. tubifex in winter. Simultaneously, the SFCW-MT improved the NO3-N treatment by 51% than that in control group. The plant growth was improved in SFCW-MT, which reflected in the improvement of total chlorophyll con

Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket and aerated constructed wetlands for swine wastewater treatment: a pilot study.

Swine wastewater management is often affected by two main issues: a too high volume for optimal reuse as a fertilizer and a too high strength for an economically sustainable treatment by classical solutions. Hence, an innovative scheme has been tested to treat swine wastewater, combining a low cost anaerobic reactor, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), with intensified constructed wetlands (aerated CWs) in a pilot scale experimental study. The swine wastewater described in this paper is produced by a swine production facility situated in North Italy. The scheme of the pilot plant consisted

Furosemide removal in constructed wetlands: Comparative efficiency of LECA and Cork granulates as support matrix.

The removal efficiency of LECA and cork granulates as support matrix for pharmaceuticals active compounds in a constructed wetland system was investigated using the diuretic drug Furosemide. Kinetics studies were performed testing three different concentrations of Furosemide in an ultrapure water matrix, along seven days. LECA achieved higher removal values compared to cork granulates. However, cork granulates presented a higher removal in the first 24 h of contact time compared to the other adsorbent. The kinetic studies showed that LECA and cork granulates have different adsorption behaviour

Concentrations of methylmercury in invertebrates from wetlands of the Prairie Pothole Region of North America.

Prairie wetlands may be important sites of mercury (Hg) methylation resulting in elevated methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in water, sediments and biota. Invertebrates are an important food resource and may act as an indicator of MeHg exposure to higher organisms. In 2007-2008, invertebrates were collected from wetland ponds in central Saskatchewan, categorized into functional feeding groups (FFGs) and analyzed for total Hg (THg) and MeHg. Methylmercury and THg concentrations in four FFGs ranged from 0.2-393.5 ng · g(-1) and 9.7-507.1 ng · g(-1), respectively. Methylmercury concentrations g

Performance evaluation of laboratory scale up-flow constructed wetlands with different designs and emergent plants.

The objective of present study was to assess the simultaneous removal of organic pollutants and nutrients by five laboratory scale up-flow constructed wetlands (UFCWs). Aerobic and anaerobic regions were well developed at the upper and lower beds, respectively, in the UFCW reactors with supplementary aeration. The emergent plants employed were Phragmites australis and Manchurian wild rice. The COD, T-N, T-P, NH(4)-N and NO(3)-N removal efficiencies for the UFCW reactors were in the range of 90-94%, 69-92%, 29-52%, 59-98% and 45-100%, respectively. The organic matter and NH(4)-N removal efficie

Significant sunlight-driven methane production at the wetland sediment-water interface.

Anthropogenic and natural wetlands are key contributors to global emissions of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas influencing Earth's climate. Wetland CH4 emissions are typically attributed to anaerobic microbial respiration; however, biotic sources alone do not account for the full extent of CH4 emissions observed in wetlands, leaving a substantial gap in understanding wetland CH4 emission sources. Here, we reveal that abiotic sunlight-driven processes efficiently drive CH4 production in wetlands with shallow water table. This is facilitated by rapid photochemical reactive oxygen species

xoxF-linked methanol oxidation signals recur across wetland metagenomes.

UNLABELLED: Wetlands are globally important methane-cycling ecosystems, but methanol oxidation remains less frequently emphasized than methane oxidation in community-level metagenomic analyses. Recent studies have highlighted the ecological importance of the lanthanide-dependent methanol dehydrogenase XoxF, yet wetland-focused xoxF literature remains comparatively limited relative to marine, freshwater, and other environmental systems. Here, we screened wetland-associated records in IMG/M using methane-metabolism and enzyme-centered queries focused on EC 1.1.2.10/xoxF and related methanol-oxid

Effects of surface wind on bicomponent contaminant transport and dispersion in wetland flow.

Wetlands act as natural water filters, removing pollutants and improving water quality. They provide critical habitat for diverse plants and animals, supporting biodiversity and helping to reduce flooding by absorbing excess rainwater and buffering storm surges. This paper develops an analytical framework to describe the concentration and dispersion process of a bicomponent contaminant in wetlands under the influence of surface winds. The vertical velocity distribution is derived from the momentum equation to characterise the flow field under surface-wind forcing, and the resulting velocity st

American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) as wetland ecosystem carbon stock regulators.

Blue carbon refers to organic carbon sequestered by oceanic and coastal ecosystems. This stock has gained global attention as a high organic carbon repository relative to other ecosystems. Within blue carbon ecosystems, tidally influenced wetlands alone store a disproportionately higher amount of organic carbon than other blue carbon systems. North America harbors 42% of tidally influenced global wetland area, which has been identified as a critical carbon stock in the context of climate change mitigation. However, quantified associations between vertebrate biota and carbon sequestration withi
