Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite capable of infecting any warm-blooded species and can increase risk-taking in intermediate hosts. Despite extensive laboratory research on the effects of T. gondii infection on behaviour, little is understood about the effects of toxoplasmosis on wild intermediate host behavior. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, has a diverse carnivore community including gray wolves (Canis lupus) and cougars (Puma concolor), intermediate and definitive hosts of T. gondii, respectively. Here, we used 26 years of wolf behavioural, spatial, and serological data to

Anthropogenic environmental contamination, including ionizing radiation, can reshape host-parasite dynamics through direct and indirect ecological pathways, yet parasite communities in radioactively contaminated landscapes remain poorly characterized. Wildlife from the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) are chronically exposed to elevated ionizing radiation across a heterogeneous contamination gradient and human-abandoned landscape, offering a rare opportunity to examine host-parasite-environment interactions under long-term radiation exposure. We characterized pathogen and parasite communities in

The aim of this study was to determine some radiographic reference values for hip joint, femur and patella in maned wolves. Ten maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus), five live (G1) and five cadavers (G2), were used. There were no statistically significant differences in the radiological measurements between right and left pelvic limbs of the G1 and G2, except for mechanical lateral proximal femoral angle (mLPFA) in both Groups. The comparison of the measurements between Groups showed difference only for mechanical lateral distal femoral angle (mLDFA). Norberg angle values were 113.1° and 112.9

The Italian wolf population in human-modified landscapes has increased greatly in the last few decades. Anthropisation increases the risk of transmission of many zoonotic infections and in this context, control of taeniid cestode species needs to be addressed from a One Health perspective. Predator-prey interactions are at the root of taeniid cestode transmission, and the wolf plays a key role in the maintenance and transmission of taeniids. To date, all available data on the taeniids of wolves in Italy refer to populations living in a wild habitat. Between 2018 and 2019, we investigated taeni

Canine adenovirus type 1 (CAdV-1) causes infectious canine hepatitis (ICH) and has recently been described as a cause of death among endangered populations of European brown bear (Ursus arctos arctos) in the Cantabrian mountain range in Asturias, Spain. Sympatric wild and domestic carnivores can act as reservoirs of the virus and likely spread it into the environment and subsequently transmit it to brown bears. The present work investigates the prevalence and geo-temporal distribution of CAdV-1 among free-ranging wolves (Canis lupus) in Asturias from 2009 to 2018, during which three fatal case

Prompt and reliable diagnostic tests for taeniid infection in canids are important due to the risk of zoonoses like Echinococcus spp. Current diagnostic methods relying on fecal flotation lack sensitivity and specificity, but this has rarely been quantified due to the challenges in performing adult cestode recovery (the gold standard) in domestic dogs (Canis familiaris). Therefore, we recovered adult Taenia and Echinococcus spp. from intestines, as well as fecal/intestinal material from 484 wild canids trapped for fur in two Canadian provinces (276 foxes - primarily Vulpes vulpes, coyotes - Ca

Rabies is endemic in Iran. It is the most important zoonotic disease in the country. Based on studies undertaken during the past few decades, there is evidence that the main reservoir for rabies is wolves. The incidence of rabies in humans and animals is increasing each year. In 2006, more than 130,000 people received post-exposure prophylaxis. Similar figures apply regarding preventive vaccination in animals. Official data suggest that the majority of human exposures are due to biting episodes caused by dogs. However, investigations performed by this team showed that in many cases wolves were

BACKGROUND: Domesticated from gray wolves between 10 and 40 kya in Eurasia, dogs display a vast array of phenotypes that differ from their ancestors, yet mirror other domesticated animal species, a phenomenon known as the domestication syndrome. Here, we use signatures persisting in dog genomes to identify genes and pathways possibly altered by the selective pressures of domestication.
RESULTS: Whole-genome SNP analyses of 43 globally distributed village dogs and 10 wolves differentiated signatures resulting from domestication rather than breed formation. We identified 246 candidate domestica

How people interact has a major influence on the intractability of wildlife-related disputes. However, research into the discursive practices employed in wildlife-related debates is limited. Applying discursive psychology, we analyse these practices in interactions on the comeback of wolves and beavers in the Netherlands. We focus on digital interactions that occur on social media. The analysis reveals an overall tendency to ascribe responsibility, not only to humans but also to the animals involved. Participants manage the issue of responsibility through various discursive practices: by means

Results of surveys for Trichinella sp. in several species of wildlife in Alberta suggest that infection is limited to wolves (Canis lupus) in northern areas of the province and maintained by a wolf/wolf transmission.

To gain insight into the population structure of the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii in wildlife in Serbia, multiplex nested PCR- RFLP was performed on T. gondii DNA positive samples of heart tissue of three wild canid species, including red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), golden jackals (Canis aureus) and grey wolves (Canis lupus). Out of 110 samples (28 red foxes, 72 golden jackals, 10 wolves), 30 (27.3%) were positive for T. gondii DNA, of which 24 were genotyped (nine red foxes, 13 golden jackals and two wolves). The results showed a large dominance of lineage II (n = 20, 83.4%) over lineage I

This article analyses the distemper outbreak that affected the population of Apennine wolves (Canis lupus) in Italy during 2013. Distemper, as rabies, is a well-known viral infectious disease that concerns the canine population worldwide and represents a threat for wild species too. Implementation of vaccination and legislation for compulsory vaccination strategies should be achieved in areas with endangered wild species.

With the aim of improving our understanding of their epidemiological features, exposure to or presence of Canine Parvovirus (CPV), Canine Distemper Virus (CDV), Leishmania infantum and Sarcoptes scabiei were studied in 88 wild wolves from Asturias (Northern Spain) by means of long-term (2004-2010) serological and molecular data. Individual and population factors and the possible interactions between them were also statistically analyzed for better understanding the contact/presence of studied pathogens. The overall seroprevalence values were 19%, 61%, 20% and 0% for CDV, CPV, S. scabiei and Le

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is an emerging zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Leishmania infantum in Mediterranean countries, with sand flies (Phlebotomus spp.) as vectors and dogs as the main domestic reservoir. The role of wild carnivores in the epidemiology of leishmaniasis is still controversial. In order to determine the prevalence of natural infection with L. infantum in wild carnivores from Spain, we analyzed 217 samples by PCR and western blotting and used restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) to compare the patterns present in wild carnivores with those of domestic dogs fr

A study on the ecological distribution of alveolar Echinococcus was carried out in the Hulunbeier Pasture of Inner Mongolia, China during 1998 and 1999. Animals examined included wolves (Canis lupus), red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), sand foxes (Vulpes corsac), domestic dogs (Canis familiaris), Microtus brandti, Meriones unguiculatus, Citellus dauricus, Allactaga sibirica, Phodopus sungorus and Ochotona daurica. Three wolves were found to be infected with E. granulosus. Two sand foxes were infected with E. multilocularis. The majority of infections of alveolar echinococcus was found in M. brandti. B

Domestic dogs are reservoirs for many infectious diseases and may represent a potential source of infection for wild canid populations. A serologic investigation of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, Brucella abortus, and Leptospira spp. was conducted on three maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) and seven crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous), all free-living, at the Aguas Emendadas Ecological Station (ESECAE), Federal District, Brazil, between February and October 2006. Out of the 10 samples analyzed, eight (80%) were seropositive for T. gondii: 3/3 (100%) of the maned wolves a

Echinococcus granulosus (Eg) is a parasite causing an incidental infection in humans. The disease can be observed as a hydatid cyst in the liver and lungs and is found in dogs and wolves as definitive hosts. It is considered a neglected infectious disease which has rarely been studied in Mexico1.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are persistent environmental contaminants with important implications for wildlife health. This study assessed hair as a non-invasive biomonitoring matrix in the Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) by comparing arsenic (As), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) concentrations in hair, liver, and kidney, and evaluating age-related accumulation patterns. A total of 77 wolves from Northwestern Spain were analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Selenium showed the highest concentrations, particularly in kidney and liver, while l
