Examining a Comprehensive Model of Work and Family Demands, Work-Family Conflict, and Depressive Symptoms in a Sample of Correctional Supervisors.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined how work and family demands affect depressive symptoms, and the mediating roles of work-to-family conflict and family-to-work conflict in a sample of correctional supervisors. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, correctional supervisors working in a Northeastern state (n = 156) participated in an online survey. Structural equation modeling was used to examine direct and indirect effects between study variables. RESULTS: Amount of overtime hours worked significantly predicted work-to-family conflict (β = 0.18, P < 0.05), and work-to-family conflict signific

Mindfulness and the challenges of working from home in times of crisis.

Many employees unexpectedly were required to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. With this abrupt change came the challenge of blurred lines between career and personal life. Lacking designated home office spaces, countless individuals had to create improvised work setups in living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms-wherever there was space. Moreover, the closure of schools forced many working parents to attempt productivity while concurrently supervising their children. As a result of these changes, numerous employees have experienced lower work productivity, lessened motivation, incr

Searching for solutions to alcohol and other drug abuse during pregnancy: ethics, values, and constitutional principles.

Recent efforts to develop legal mechanisms to detect prenatal substance abuse and force pregnant women into drug-free conditions have precipitated ethical struggles for social workers. This article reviews relevant social work values and ethical issues, particularly the need to balance obligations to promote client self-determination, privacy, and access to chosen services with professional values that support coercive intervention to aid vulnerable people and to protect life. The constitutional principles that most affect coercive interventions--due process and equal protection--are reviewed.

'The players are the focus, it's never spoken about as coaches': Perceived factors influencing the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches.

Elite-level coaches operate within highly demanding, pressurised and unstable high-performance environments that can increase their risk of mental ill-health. This qualitative study investigated perceived factors influencing the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches using an ecological systems approach. Fourteen coaches (men = 12, women = 2) from a range of individual and team sports participated in a single semi-structured interview. Five overarching themes perceived to influence the mental health of Australian elite-level coaches were developed through reflexive thematic analysis,

Relationship between work-family conflict and unhealthy eating: Does eating style matter?

There is increasing evidence to suggest that work-family conflict is implicated in poor eating patterns. Yet, the underlying mechanism remains unexplored. The objectives of the present study were to demonstrate the interplay between work-family conflict, eating style, and unhealthy eating, and to test whether body mass index (BMI) and its interactions further explicate the relationships. In this study, 586 Malaysian adults (normal weight n = 437, overweight n = 149) completed a questionnaire, which included demographic variables, work-family scales, eating style measures, namely, restrained, e
