The relationship between motivation, monetary compensation, and data quality among US- and India-based workers on Mechanical Turk.

In this study, we examined data quality among Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) workers based in India, and the effect of monetary compensation on their data quality. Recent studies have shown that work quality is independent of compensation rates, and that compensation primarily affects the quantity but not the quality of work. However, the results of these studies were generally based on compensation rates below the minimum wage, and far below a level that was likely to play a practical role in the lives of workers. In this study, compensation rates were set around the minimum wage in India. To

Understanding work-related injuries in children: a perspective in West Virginia using the state-managed workers' compensation system.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Little data exist that defines the consequences of occupational injuries in children. Traditional assessment of work-related injury is coupled with disability payments based on salary, which give little insight into etiology and severity. The authors hypothesize that the risk and pattern of occupational injuries in young workers are different then adults. METHODS: Claims from 1996 through 2000 were analyzed from the West Virginia Bureau of Workers Compensation. To define the significance of an injury, child and adult groups were subdivided into injuries that required surge

Surgical treatment of patients with back problems covered by workers compensation versus those with other sources of payment.

STUDY DESIGN: The present study examines relationships between workers compensation coverage and the surgical treatment of patients with low back problems. OBJECTIVES: To examine the mix of surgical procedures, reoperation rates, and resource use among patients receiving workers compensation and these with other sources of payment. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There is evidence that patients with low back pain who receive workers' compensation have poorer clinical outcomes than other patients with back problems. METHODS: The authors used data from Washington State's automated hospital discha

Getting to work with a physical disability: gaps in disability, transportation, and workers' compensation return-to-work policies and programs.

PURPOSE: Disabled people are less likely to be employed than those without disabilities. Research on the relationship between accessibility and the employment of physically disabled people has focused primarily on accessibility concerns within workplaces, neglecting challenges associated with travel to and within work, or 'work mobility'. Those few researchers who have addressed work mobility largely deal either with people with nonwork-related disabilities or with the return-to-work experiences of injured workers. Both literatures pay insufficient attention to the potential role of policy and

The Relative Burden of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses in Firefighters: An Analysis of Washington Workers' Compensation Claims, 2006-2020.

Firefighters face many hazards on the job and have a high rate of work-related injuries and illnesses (WRII). We analyzed Washington workers' compensation claims from 2006-2020 to characterize WRII in firefighters compared to law enforcement officers and "all other" workers. There were 9187 compensable claims for firefighters, 7801 for law enforcement officers, and 586,939 for "all other" workers. Nearly 40% of claims for firefighters were work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). The claim rate per 10,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) firefighters was 716.4, which is significantly higher t

Ankle Sprains in the Workers' Compensation System: Trends, Costs, and Predictors of High-Expense Claims: A 9-Year Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate trends, costs, and predictors of high-cost ankle sprain claims in the workers' compensation system. METHODS: Among 26,773 ankle injury claims (2016-2024), 18,991 sprains were identified and analyzed using descriptive and analytical multivariate methods. RESULTS: Sprains comprised about 70% of all ankle injuries, with increasing proportions among medical-only claims during the 9 years. Litigation, some comorbidities (diabetes and thyroid conditions), and coexisting injuries were strongly associated with high-cost claims (≥$50,000). Sprains without coexisting injuries r

The Influence of Workers' Compensation Status on Patient-Reported Outcomes after Cervical Disc Arthroplasty at an Ambulatory Surgical Center.

INTRODUCTION: Workers' compensation (WC) status tends to negatively affect patient outcomes in spine surgery. This study aims to evaluate the potential effect of WC status on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) after cervical disc arthroplasty (CDR) at an ambulatory surgical center (ASC). METHODS: A single-surgeon registry was retrospectively reviewed for patients who had undergone elective CDR at an ASC. Patients with missing insurance data were excluded. Propensity score-matched cohorts were generated by the presence or lack of WC status. PROs were collected preoperatively and at 6-week, 12-we

Work-relatedness of selected chronic medical conditions and workers' compensation utilization: National health interview survey occupational health supplement data.

BACKGROUND: An occupational health supplement (OHS) to the 1988 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) bypassed many limitations of traditional occupational health surveillance systems, but the data collected about chronic work-related conditions have not yet been reported. METHODS: We calculated the prevalence and proportion of cases related to work for the aggregation of 13 chronic conditions included in the NHIS-OHS, and for 11 conditions individually. For each of nine conditions, and for the aggregation of all conditions, we also calculated the prevalence of workers' compensation claims

Work-related carpal tunnel syndrome in Washington State workers' compensation: utilization of surgery and the duration of lost work.

BACKGROUND: Work-related carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a leading cause of lengthy disability. METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study used Washington State workers' compensation claims for CTS to characterize associations between utilization of CTS surgery and duration of lost work. The sample included all claims (n = 8,224) filed during 1990-1994 (followed through 2000) and receiving lost-work compensation. RESULTS: Sixty-four percent of studied workers had CTS surgery. Among workers with >1 month of lost work, the total duration was much shorter when workers had surgery

Evaluation of Factors Affecting Return to Work Following Carpal Tunnel Release: A Statewide Cohort Study of Workers' Compensation Subjects.

PURPOSE: Most randomized trials comparing open carpal tunnel release (OCTR) to endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTR) are not specific to a working population and focus mainly on how surgical technique has an impact on outcomes. This study's primary goal was to evaluate factors affecting days out of work (DOOW) following carpal tunnel release (CTR) in a working population and to evaluate for differences in medical costs, indemnity payments, disability ratings, and opioid use between OCTR and ECTR with the intent of determining whether one or the other surgical method was a determining factor.

Workers' compensation claim counts and rates by injury event/exposure among state-insured private employers in Ohio, 2007-2017.

INTRODUCTION: This study analyzed workers' compensation (WC) claims among private employers insured by the Ohio state-based WC carrier to identify high-risk industries by detailed cause of injury. METHODS: A machine learning algorithm was used to code each claim by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) event/exposure. The codes assigned to lost-time (LT) claims with lower algorithm probabilities of accurate classification or those LT claims with high costs were manually reviewed. WC data were linked with the state's unemployment insurance (UI) data to identify the employer's industry and numb

Lumbar Discography Is Associated With Poor Return to Work Status Following Lumbar Fusion Surgery in a Workers' Compensation Setting.

Lumbar discography (LD) is used to guide surgical decision making in patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD). Its safety and diagnostic accuracy are under contention. This study evaluates LD's efficacy within the workers' compensation (WC) population. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the impact that undergoing LD before lumbar fusion for DDD had on return to work (RTW) rates among 1407 WC subjects. Discography was negatively associated with RTW status (p = .042; OR 0.76); 22.2% (142/641) of LD subjects met the RTW criteria, compared with 29.6% (227/766) of

Rates of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in a State Workers' Compensation Information System, by Industry and Occupation - California, 2007-2014.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the wrist within the carpal tunnel, resulting in pain, tingling, weakness, or numbness in the hand or the wrist. Occupational risk factors for CTS include engaging in work activities that require forceful, repetitive tasks, prolonged use of the hands or wrists in an awkward posture, or vibration (1). To assess trends and identify high-risk industries and occupations for CTS, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) analyzed California workers' compensation claims for CTS by industry (2007
