The ADAPT model: integrating employer insights into a framework for practice-ready health professions graduates.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare systems rely on a skilled and diverse workforce to deliver patient-centred care across settings. Rising patient acuity, rapid technological change, and interprofessional collaboration have heightened expectations for graduates to be "practice-ready" on entry to the workforce. Health professions education (HPE) must therefore extend beyond discipline-specific knowledge to prepare graduates for real-world practice. Employers, as key stakeholders, are uniquely positioned to assess this readiness, yet their perspectives are seldom explored. This study explores employer vie

Increasing Access to Urology: One Program's Multifaceted Approach to Expanding the Urologic Workforce.

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that physician-patient concordance improves patient satisfaction and health outcomes, the urologic workforce is less diverse than the patient populations it serves. We describe the implementation and outcomes of a multifaceted, holistic, merit-based recruitment strategy designed to expand the urologic workforce in a single academic urology residency program. METHODS: Beginning in 2020, (location masked for blinded review) implemented a new multifaceted recruitment strategy, including a funded visiting student rotation to help students who are economically disadvan

Time, talk, and teamwork: Perceptions of personalised dementia care planning conversations in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Dementia affects over 57 million people worldwide. UK and international policy position personalised, conversation-based care planning as central to post-diagnostic support. However, delivery in primary care is inconsistent, and many practitioners lack dementia-specific communication training. Existing evidence focuses on single roles or settings, leaving a gap in understanding how communication operates across the primary care workforce. AIMS: To identify what helps and hinders effective communication for integrated dementia care planning and determine the support and training ne

Leadership research in nursing (2000-2024): a bibliometric analysis of global trends and thematic evolution.

PURPOSE: Nursing leadership plays a critical role in shaping care quality, workforce well-being and organizational outcomes. Although research on nursing leadership has expanded substantially, a comprehensive overview of its long-term evolution and post-pandemic trends is lacking. This study aims to map the scientific landscape of nursing leadership research and identify thematic and productivity trends between 2000 and 2024. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A descriptive bibliometric analysis was conducted using research and review articles indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection. Da

Between reluctance and resistance: LGBTQ+ healthcare professionals and their experiences in the workplace.

BACKGROUND: Literature shows that stigma against LGBTQ+ people in healthcare affects professionals as well as patients. Research indicates that discrimination is transversal to all healthcare professions; hierarchies and heteronormativity contribute to difficult visibility both with colleagues and with patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the experiences of LGBTQ+ healthcare professionals in the workplace, analyzing their practices of (in)visibility, their experiences of discrimination and their relationships with patients. METHODS: Data were collected through semi-structured int

Diversity and professional excellence.

There are compelling moral and practical reasons why the memberships in professions should mirror the populations that they serve. In order to address this general issue more exactly, this essay will confine itself to a particular case as an emblem for the general point. The particular case is the profession of orthopedic surgeons in the United States. From an examination of this specific case, it is hoped that more general issues of racial, ethnic, and gender fairness within the professions will also be addressed.

The future of cancer nursing in Europe: Addressing professional issues in education, research, policy and practice.

Cancer nursing has evolved to meet the demands of rising cancer incidence, newer and more complex treatment options, and the emergence of specialist roles supporting patients from pre-diagnosis, through treatment, survivorship and end of life care. Nurses are involved in direct and in-direct care of people at risk of, and living with and after cancer in diverse contexts. As a result, nurses are positioned to have a significant influence on the processes and outcomes of cancer care, through education, research, policy, practice and leadership. However, nursing and cancer care face challenges, a

Building Capacity for Health Communication in the GCC: Educator and Practitioner Perspectives.

Health communication is increasingly recognized as central to public health practice, yet limited evidence shows how competencies are defined and developed in regions where the field is emerging. This mixed methods study examined how educators and practitioners in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) conceptualize essential knowledge, skills, and abilities for effective health communication and assess current education and training capacity. Survey data from 59 participants and follow-up interviews showed high importance ratings across all competency domains, particularly multicultural and crisi

The Blue Coats Program to Improve and Sustain Workforce Well-Being.

The Blue Coats program at Penn Medicine is a systemwide initiative designed to amplify the voices of clinical teams to understand and support workforce well-being. Recognizing that traditional system-level strategies often cannot address real-time frontline team needs, the Blue Coats program, launched in August 2022, is a locally embedded group of well-being ambassadors and operational consultants. These trained team members engage directly with clinicians and staff within their local clinical environments - observing, shadowing, and listening to all team members - to identify pain points and

Medical education for "Dreamers": Barriers and opportunities for undocumented immigrants.

Medical schools should amend their admissions policies to welcome applications from qualified undocumented immigrants, often called "Dreamers." The recent creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service removes the key obstacles to securing a license and residency eligibility for such medical school graduates. As a result, to deny application to Dreamers of DACA status represents a kind of unjustified discrimination and violates the basic ethical principle of the equality of human beings. In addition, the medical profession'

Developing Cultural Self-Awareness for Intervention in Diversity Contexts: A Scoping Review.

In a diversity intervention context, the practitioner may have biases and stereotypes related to their own cultural background that will influence their approach. Developing cultural self-awareness could help reduce the manifestation of these biases and stereotypes. However, it is likely to be one of the least researched aspects of intercultural competence. This scoping study was conducted to provide an overview of how cultural self-awareness is addressed across disciplines related to interventions in diverse contexts. The methodology used followed that of the Joanna Briggs Institute. The diff

One Embryology: impactful connections between human- and wildlife-assisted reproduction.

PURPOSE: Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in humans have evolved from early experimental work into a globally established clinical field, with animal research providing the foundation for their development and continuous refinement. This review examines the reciprocal relationship between human and animal ART and considers how a broader "One Embryology" framework may benefit both reproductive medicine and wildlife conservation. METHODS: The historical and contemporary connections between human, domestic animal, and wildlife ART are reviewed, with particular consideration of comparativ

'Death on an industrial scale'- general practice trainees' perceptions and experiences of dying and death during covid-19: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

CONTEXT: The COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in numbers of patients dying at home in the UK, meaning that general practitioners (GPs) were exposed to more patient death than would be pre-COVID. This project aimed to gain insight into GP trainees' experiences of patient death between March and July 2020. This insight can inform support for GPs, leading to improved wellbeing, workforce retention and ultimately, better patient-centred care. METHODS: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of semi-structured interviews was used to explore GP trainees' experiences of patient death in o

"You're not just there to do a job": a qualitative examination of Canadian long-term care worker strengths.

BACKGROUND: Research on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on long-term care workers has largely emphasized the negative outcomes of crisis conditions and workforce distress, leaving strengths-based perspectives on workers’ experiences during this period underexplored. Recognizing the potential of strengths-focused inquiry to inform sector transformation and workforce renewal, we conducted a secondary qualitative analysis of Canadian long-term care worker experiences during the pandemic using an Appreciative Inquiry lens to examine and more fully represent workers’ strengths. METHODS: A qual
