While deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) after cardiac surgery is a significant contributor to patient morbidity and mortality, superficial sternal wound infection (SSWI) mostly has a benign course. We report a mortality case of aortic rupture resulting from SSWI after cardiac surgery. A 50-year-old male underwent an aortic valve replacement (AVR). Three months after the valve operation, he presented with severe dyspnea, which had never before been observed, and chest computed tomography revealed an ascending aortic rupture with large hematoma compressing the main pulmonary artery. We perform

Deep sternal wound infections are potentially life-threatening complications after cardiac operations because they can spread into the mediastinum and cause postoperative morbidity and mortality. We present a 65-year-old man with a history of coronary artery bypass grafting. A large sternal defect was left after debridement. After brief vacuum-assisted closure (VAC), a free myocutaneous flap of the anterolateral thigh (ALT) was used to fill the dead space. At the 9-month follow-up, the wound had healed completely without tissue loss or complications, and the patient returned to normal life. Th

INTRODUCTION: Metal implants placed during fracture surgery are often removed for various reasons (i.e. pain, prominent material, patients request). The removal of implants is considered a 'clean' procedure and as low risk surgery. The incidence of wound infections following implant removal has received little attention in the literature. The aim of the current study was to assess the incidence and risk factors of postoperative wound infections (POWIs) following implant removal.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All consecutive adult patients in a Level 1 and Level 2 Trauma Center who had their implants

BACKGROUND: Ectopic transfer has been described as a salvage procedure in failing replants. The experience in three cases of infected failing replantations treated with secondary temporary ectopic transfer of the replanted part is presented.
METHODS: Three patients with replanted traumatic amputations (one transhumeral, one transmetacarpal, and one transtibial) that developed severe wound infections and thrombosis of the anastomoses were treated with urgent ectopic transfer of the replanted part. The ectopic recipient vessels were the femoral, posterior tibial, and the descending branch of th

BACKGROUND: This is a report of 2 cases of fungal wound infection after cataract surgery (phacoemulsification). Both patients were noticed to have the fungal wound infection at the one-month follow-up after the surgery.
OBSERVATIONS: Although both patients had been advised to taper steroid containing antibiotic eye drops, they failed to do so. Despite intensive treatment with antifungal eye drops and oral antifungal agents, visual outcome was poor.
CONCLUSION: Fungal infection of the wound may occur in cataract patients in the post-operative period. This infection is probably more common in

UNLABELLED: Background. Little is known about the bacteriology of the pericolostomic skin region. Identifying these bacteria is important to reduce the morbidity resulting from this procedure both to control local infection and to reduce the risk of infection in other surgical sites.
OBJECTIVE: The scope of this study was to determine the prevalence and type of peristomal skin bacteria in colostomy patients.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients with a temporary colostomy were included in the study. Their mean age was 51.6 years. All patients had been colostomized for more than 7 weeks.
RESULTS:

A 10-month-old child from the Middle East received complete correction for tetralogy of Fallot. Despite an initially uneventful postoperative course, he developed severe deep sternal wound infection after 7 days. This complication was endogenously acquired caused by a resistant and rarely present in Europe, Streptococcus pneumonia. Following surgical debridement, betadine rinsing for 3 days and with a course of specific antibiotic therapy, the patient was discharged in good health.

One hundred and seventy-two children with cerebral palsy were operated on for neuromuscular scoliosis by spinal fusion with unit rod instrumentation between January 1988 and June 1996. There were 15 (8.7%) postoperative wound infections (seven deep, eight superficial) in 15 patients (five males, 10 females) who had a mean age of 13.9 years. The mean follow-up after diagnosis of infection was 3.3 years (range, 1-7.2). Twelve of the 15 infected cases, including all seven deep infections, occurred in the distal portion of the incision. In 14 patients, the wound infections were diagnosed within th

A retrospective study of 37 patients undergoing pulmonary resection, between 1975 and 1980, was performed to establish the incidence of wound infection and to determine contributory factors. Sixteen patients had suppurative lung disease while 11 had pulmonary tuberculosis. The majority of the patients received prophylactic antibiotic (Ampicillin and Cloxacillin) given intramuscularly or intravenously, prior to thoracotomy, and continued for several days post-operatively. Twenty of the 37 cases (54%) developed wound infection, defined as any purulent wound drainage in the post-operative period.

The advisability of routine allograft nephrectomy following rejection has not been clearly resolved. Rejected transplants may be a source of sepsis, local inflammatory symptoms, and continued antigenic stimulation. Transplant nephrectomy is, however, attended by a surprisingly high incidence of septic complications and death. In an attempt to analyze the occurrence of these, and identify effective prophylactic maneuvers, the authors retrospectively studied 99 consecutive allograft nephrectomies in 252 consecutive renal transplants. Mortality following allograft nephrectomy was 10 per cent, and

Bacterial infection and oxidative stress are critical factors affecting diabetic wound healing. Regulating the wound microenvironment by suppressing bacterial infection, oxidative stress, while promoting angiogenesis presents a major challenge in diabetic wound healing. Through Schiff base crosslinking between dihydrocaffeic acid-modified chitosan (HCA) and oxidized dextran (ODX), a three-dimensional network structure of injectable hydrogel (CSDX3) was constructed, enabling controlled sustained release of loaded copper ions. In vitro results indicate that the CSDX3 hydrogel exhibits excellent

Following injury, most wounds resolve without any complication. However, if healing is impeded then the wound can become chronic and persist in a non-healing state for months, and even years in some cases. Globally, the majority of chronic wounds have biofilm present that does not resolve unless disrupted. Slough and devitalised tissue need to be removed as they act as a nidus for the biofilm. This article summarises the current methods available for cleaning and debridement and discusses topical antimicrobial treatments used to reduce bioburden.

OBJECTIVE: Postcesarean surgical site infections (SSIs) contribute substantially to morbidity and healthcare costs, yet understanding of their management remains limited.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study of patients delivering via cesarean at a single healthcare system from June 2013 to July 2022 with SSIs within 30 days of delivery. Rates and risk factors for surgical intervention were examined as the primary outcome. Secondary analysis evaluated outcomes in those who required surgical versus conservative management.
RESULTS: Of 533 patients, 69 (12.9%) required surgical management;

Diabetic wounds, often multifactorial and affecting multiple organs, pose substantial challenges to patient well-being, drawing significant interest in biomedical engineering. The demanding wound microenvironment, marked by heightened glucose levels, local exudate, and bacterial infections, emphasizes the pressing demand for advanced wound dressings to meet escalating clinical needs. Herein, a Janus wound dressing with an integration of an antimicrobial hydrophobic nanofiber layer and a 3D hydrophilic sponge was designed and prepared to manage and utilize wound exudate. The hydrophobic layer s

BACKGROUND: The colonization of burn wounds by Pseudomonas aeruginosa can lead to septic shock, organ injuries, and high mortality rates. We hypothesized that negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) would decrease invasion and proliferation of P. aeruginosa within the burn wound and reduce mortality.
METHODS: Thermal injuries were induced in anesthetized mice, and P. aeruginosa was applied to the wound surface for 24 h. After removing the burn eschar and debridement, the animals were subjected to either NPWT or wet-to-dry (WTD) treatment protocols. The bacterial loads on the wound surface were

Superficial infections in chronic wounds can prevent the wound healing process by the development of persistent infections and drug-resistant biofilms. Topically applied antimicrobial formulations with stabilized and controlled release offer significant benefits for the effective treatment of wound infections. Bacteriocins are the antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) produced by bacteria that are viable alternatives to antibiotics owing to their natural origin and low propensity for resistance development. Herein, we developed a hybrid hydrogel composed of Pluronic F127 (PF127), ethylenediaminetetraa

This review provides a comprehensive summary of issues associated with treating polyclonal bacterial biofilms in chronic diabetic wounds. We use this as a foundation and discuss the alternatives to conventional antibiotics and the emerging need for suitable drug delivery systems. In recent years, extraordinary advances have been made in the field of nanoparticle synthesis and packaging. However, these systems have not been incorporated into the clinic for treatments other than for cancer or severe genetic diseases. We present a unifying perspective on how the field is evolving and the need for

Combat-related invasive fungal (mold) wound infections (IFIs) have emerged as an important and morbid complication following explosive blast injuries among military personnel. Similar to trauma-associated IFI cases among civilian populations, as in agricultural accidents and natural disasters, these infections occur in the setting of penetrating wounds contaminated by environmental debris. Specific risk factors for combat-related IFI include dismounted (patrolling on foot) blast injuries occurring mostly in southern Afghanistan, resulting in above knee amputations requiring resuscitation with
